iOS 6 metallic button bling is both unnecessary and awesome

We all know at this point that Apple prides itself on its design, and notably on the design it puts into the smallest details of a product. Nothing shows that off more than what we have for you today with the new metallic buttons in iOS 6...

This effect will also be on the iPad, which has quite a large screen. Not to mention, it's widely assumed the iPhone 5 will have a 4" screen.

not really... it depends on the user... i dont ened my phone to download things just the slightest bit faster and compensate with lag.. if there is that large of a need to download quickly i can just turn off the screen and let it do its thing... many people probably want performance as you said, but ui lagginess bugs me more (but we are talking about fractions of seconds here so its really a nonissue)

Hmm... when I was creating virtual Home button for iPhone 5 concept, I was thinking of possibility to simulate its illumination by tilting the device. I'm actually suprised I guessed Apple's design correctly even to this detail.

It's all part of a bigger picture when it comes to Apple's design philosophy, which will be extensively covered in my book about Apple, and could essentialy be described as "mimicry".

In short, it is the tendency of Apple - that dates back to their very beginnings (when they first developed 72 dpi screen standard to match the typographic unit) - to mimic the content displayed on reproduction. This led all the way to the Retina screens we know today, that are in fact ultra-high fidelity digital reproduction. They are transparent to the elements of content they show. And this elements are emulation of the real-world materials.

That's why Apple's software is allways oriented at visually simulating different materials like metal, glass, wood, skin etc, and they now finally can do it perfectly through means of Retina display, and add interactivity with the real world when the employ gyroscope, accelometer and other...

Hardware side, Apple allways tended to produce monolithic design to enable the pure effect of this mimicry. Their products are basically allways empty slates, with unbelievable precision of materials that are homogenous.

So, saying that Apple design is based only on being shiny and glassy to be attractive is a trap in which all other manufacturers fall, and ultimately cannot match Apple.

Apple's design is hard to understood for majority of people, but they have their strict philosophy that can enable us to forsee what could be next.

Now let me give you some indicative quote by Johnatan Ive:

"One of the things that really irritates me in products is when I’m aware of designers wagging their tails in my face. Our goal is to create simple objects, objects that you can’t imagine any other way. Get it right and you become closer and more focused on the object. For instance, the iPhoto app we created for the new iPad completely consumes you and you forget you are using an iPad"

So, mimicry, guys. Mimicry. That's the ticket.

This is seen in Bada and GoLocker.... They better get patent on this before apple else then once again iTroll war will begin...
