iOS 6 Review

0. phoneArena 20 Sep 2012, 03:06 posted on

September 19 has come, and for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users, this means only one thing - iOS 6 is here! Having the new OS up and running on our iDevices in no time, we've had enough time to check it out and lay our thoughts on paper... that is... the digital kind of paper that our website... is, and... stuff. Yeah, so, iOS 6 - disappointing to some, but inspiring to others - did Apple really manage to provide a substantial update to its venerable mobile operating system, or did it just add a few gimmicky features, trying to make it look new, distracting from the aging visuals that many want to see renovated? We'll try to answer all of these questions and more - right here, right now...

Apple Maps doesn't hold any ground to Google Maps, it's kind of pointless to make it. Also, I wonder if Siri is still smacked down by Google Now, or have they closed the gap on that one?

After Apple's own mapping app levels that of Google's, Google maps will be pretty much far superior ahead of Apple's, and that is an opinion based on facts. You just can't beat a competitor who has that total experience and massive database.

nothing personal but Ray is very biased when it comes to apple (been reading his articles for quite some time). after reading this article it feels like ios6 is perfect and magical. and idk how can he say that visually ios6 is better than JB. i am running AOKP JB 4.1.1 on my galaxy nexus and ios does not even come close to it in terms of looks and functionality both.
now waiting for a hate mail from iphonearena.

Apple's problem is going to be that people are used to Google Maps. Anything short of that will not be seen favorably. So in theory Apple's Map will start to be just like a Google Maps clone. Just like iOS6 is just more & more Android features, the same will be said of Apple's Maps application.

iOS6 = nothing new that has not been done on Android for years now. Basically morphing into an Android clone.

Exactly. People were bashing Android for being an iOS clone, and now every year iOS is getting more and more like Android, except Apple doesn't implement those features into iOS as well as how they are in Android

The problem here that in moving to their own inferior mapping product over Google's, it's clear that this 'feature' is intended to benefit Apple, not the customer. That doesn't bode well for the direction of the company.

Hey Apple, welcome to 2010 with voice navigation. Public transportation navigation? Not there. Let's face it, the I5 took a big hit with Google Maps being removed.

Welcome to 2011 with LTE.

Still no NFC, and half of the phones (Sprint & Verizon) can not use data and voice at the same time.

It's a good phone, but doesn't live up to the hype. Apple still has to catch up. Many of the new features are ones Android has had for years. These articles always fail to mention that. A new and exciting feature!! For Apple users anyway.

The author wasn't as one sided as others I have seen on here. Not a bad article. Although I didn't see anything about fragmentation. Did I miss it? Every time there is an Android update, there are five articles about Android fragmentation.

Booring :/ it sould be called ios 1.0.0.0.0.1. No visual changes, replaced great mapping by google by some homebrew trash, siri can say two more sentences and they stole fb integration from wp 7, and they have the audacity to call this a new os iteration. Wow... I mean wow...

Last night I updated iOS 6 in my iPad 2, 2 issues.
1. Keyboard is not coming when I compose a new mail or reply mail.
2. I don't know what happen to WiFi, my router is placed in another room, which was working fine till before update, once done I feel very hard to get WiFi bar from my room.

After this I did a reset network settings, keyboard problem completely solved, WiFi little okay now.

Did anyone experienced?

It figures an article that would praise 2 year old technology as if it were new would be written by Ray S. It's come to a point to where most of the commenters on this website KNOW he is biased and point it out on every article he writes yet no one does anything about it. Ray S. could sell you a fake cure for cancer as long as it was endorsed by Apple.

Apple is not yet brave enough to overhaul what worked for them for a couple of years. Until the competition gets tougher, I hope Apple has the courage to step up their game.

for all android fanboys, please stop mocking other competitors, okay ?

i'm an android user & i think iOS is still a great OS, it's fast, fluid, easy to use & their services are great but it's still not an OS for everyone. some won't like the lack of customization or the steps you have to take to get what you can get with unlocking your android phone.

let the apple fanboys talk as much as they want, let's see if they have a real bite not just loud barks

Hi, I upgraded my Ipad 2 to iOS6, post which my 3G connection stopped working. The sim card is getting detected, but it gives the message, "you do not have a cellular data plan" Anyone else facing the same issue? Also, is there any way to remove the update? The new maps app doesn't work well in India showing wrong locations and very few details regarding the roads and I use maps frequently

When Ray S speaks of "terrific" user experience, I think he's solely pleased by the smoothness of the UI which is logical due to the lack of power hungry background processes like live widgets or live wallpapers. What iOS does well is loading quality apps, I won't deny that most apps developed for iOS are superior in refinement than Android counterparts, that's what really gives Apple an edge over the competition. iOS by itself is so dated.

Hmm, how can iOS keep looking better and better, by being the same? More refined? How? You said its pretty much the same so where's the refined difference? Yea, that's a stretch...and don't EVER blaspheme about Jelly Bean!

Well of course, iphone/iOS6 have been much favored by phonearena thats why im expecting a perfect score when the iphone5 has been reviewed. Ios6 is the the most advance os that brings brand new features that others will follow.

Following my comment (68 fosterdel) I have still got my cracking google maps.
Lesson: don't go to ...6 till you are: A. sure you always know where you are, B. where it is you're going and C. positive you will recognize where you are if you ever get there.

Of course I still drool thinking of an Iphone 5. Ios 6000 or whatever. What am I talking about? I cannot even afford an Ebay second hand iphone. Anyone feeling charitable.
