ZTE announced the Axon 7s with a chip upgrade and a dual-camera setup – too bad, you can't have it!

Chinese smartphone maker ZTE announced an upgraded version of the Axon 7 model that it sells in the USA and other markets outside its homeland. The 7s runs the Snapdragon 821 processor in place of the SD 820, and dons a dual-camera setup on its back. Everything else pretty much stays the same, which isn't bad at all - the Axon 7 is a powerful handset with a 5.5-inch QHD display, 4GB of RAM, ample storage space, and it looks quite nice.

Can't wrong ZTE for giving more of the same with fresher specs in an "s"-type release, but alas, the Axon 7s will be limited to a particular user base – Chinese government officials. At least that's how the announcement makes it seem. The press release is all about government security, encryption, Chinese authorities, office systems and all kinds of stuff that's probably absent from your peaceful daily life. So don't count on the Axon 7s making it to America, or other countries – it's a phone designed for Chinese government use.

It's a bit unfortunate, because the Axon 7 offered a compelling price-to-features ratio, and the Axon line in general is well-positioned as a choice for an "affordable flagship" – together with the Honor 8 and OnePlus phones. But ZTE is free to make such business decisions of its own, that we cannot really judge. Onward to the Axon 8, then!
