The seemingly endless contests to flog some mediocre phone get tiresome. They might even be producing negative marketing effects as consumers equate "contest" with "crap".
The mobile phone world will be a lot more exciting if (a) manufacturers shipped phones when they announced them, (b) stopped charging ridiculous prices for the phones, (c) provided easy root/unlock capabilities built into the phone, so everyone could enjoy a customized phone experience.

$635 worth of gift cards to buy movies and music, since nothing else is appealing at that price?

Boooooring!!.... MS needs to be releasing a huge device on every carrier possible, in the US, right now... This is just another example of how MS always drops the ball on awareness, and marketing...
WP doesn't need a stupid contest, it needs an influx of devices, and adequate marketing... One nice device, once a year, with horrible marketing, isn't going to get anyone's attention... WP is great, but MS doesn't know how to sell it... They should pay Samsung, or Apple, to market for them, because I just don't have faith right now that they'll ever get it right...

They should do that promotion for lumia 1520 ;)
Giving away a phone and $1520!

The problem is that the average consumer isn't going to know about the promotion.... You have to be a WP fan, or tech enthusiasts that already is aware of WP, T even go for it....
We shouldn't be the audience that MS is targeting.. That's not a complete waist of time, but let's just say that it's waist of time.

Really they should just sell these things for somewhere around $40. They'll find plenty of takers. As long as Microsoft is throwing away billions trying to gain market share for Windows Phone, they might as well actually gain some share vs. playing silly contest games that won't accomplish anything except make people think "WP = crap, like a bad prize you win at a contest".
