Woz thinks iTunes should be released for Android

0. phoneArena posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:24

Steve Wozniak is one of our favorite people in the world. He's the epitome of the lovable geek, and he's honest about his opinions. He is living proof that your inner self will not burn if you appreciate both Apple and Android for different reasons. Essentially, he is the anti-fanboy, and that's why we love him...

This idea is not bad at all, but we all know that Apple will never allow that.

Good idea, but we might get sued. I feel red thumbs coming already.

64. abdane posted on 01 Oct 2012, 23:21

will, since we will still have drag and drop and the openness, that would be great... but i wish it would update latest android versions on any android device, that would be awesome :P

76. PhenomFaz posted on 02 Oct 2012, 06:36 2

Woz is one guy the whole android community loves and all Apple sheep love to hate but cant ignore!
He is right ...there is nothing wrong with porting a great system to another platform...heck it might get Apple's sorry a$$ some love from us androids!
Woz isnt biased and that I can respect :)

29. Jelly_Bean posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:42 29 5

I f**king hate iTunes. Don't even talk about it on Android platform.

38. dsDoan posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:17 8 3

No one is forcing you to use it. Note the purpose of this article: "freedom of choice" and "openness."

45. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:05 5 4

Google Play Store is improving fast, you have Amazon which is as good as iTunes, and there are many other streaming services as well.

We never lack choice with Android b-c Android supports all standard media formats unlike iOS.

46. dsDoan posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:19 4

Google Play Store and Amazon don't help those who have invested a lot of cash in iTunes that are considering a switch to Android but won't because they their data is tied up in iTunes.

50. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:30 1

There are many tools that help you convert iTunes collections to standard formats.

55. dsDoan posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:45

The average consumer isn't going to invest the time in 3rd-party tools when considering the switch, regardless of how simple it may seem to you or I. It's too much of an inconvenience. They would use software they already know.

56. VZWuser76 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:53 1

One pretty simple way, and cheap depending on the size of your music collection, is to burn music CDs of your library. Not in mp3, but with the format that can be played in any CD player. Then after that rip it to your PC. You lose the DRM when converting for audio CD. This obviously is only for music, but the only cost is blank CDs which are dirt cheap and anyone can burn/rip CDs.

82. Rayvelynn posted on 02 Oct 2012, 09:51

if you switched from an iphone to an Android, just download Google Music to your computer & select "Itunes" for the option to transfer music to your android device. you also have to make sure the app Play Music is already downloaded on your phone. Hope this helps. =O)

41. SleepingOz posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:36 2

I don't like itunes as well but I like the idea of buying a single app and use it on both platforms. I, personally don't use any iOS device but I know a lot of people using Android as phone and iOS(iPad) as tab.
And this would facilitate the switch from iOS to Android(vice versa).

51. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:31 1

In this case just call Apple to use standard file formats, but they won't so Woz's talk is for nothing.

78. Evil_SaNz posted on 02 Oct 2012, 06:58 1

I hated itunes with all my soul even when I liked the 3gs as my first smartphone

44. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:58 5

No thanks Woz, we have Play store. It will get better very soon.

63. maxican16 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 22:27 3

Say android users to Woz, "No thanks."

2. bragzter posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:31 27 1

I personally don't like or use iTunes. It's a waste and a headache, especially when managing multiple devices. User profiles to set up, music has to be converted to aac format, why can't it remain as mp3. Apple is like a communist state and people just don't see it. They demand you do things their way or no way.

7. PapaSmurf posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:38 3 1

All the songs I have on iTunes are on my SD card. Its actually not hard at all and takes a few seconds for each song.

9. Pings posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:40 11 1

Yep. Google Play music > iTunes

11. nnaatthhaannx2 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:50 6

I just wish that google make a desktop app.
I find it very nice to have the "mini" player on my taskbar to quickly pause and skip songs.
If you have more than one iDevice, it wants to sync EVERYTHING. Apple has no idea that the function of an iPad isn't the same as a phone.... or an iPod.

12. SleepingOz posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:52 2 2

Would be awesome!

80. Hallucinator posted on 02 Oct 2012, 09:30 2

I completely disagree. Currently ITunes >>>Google Music

87. Pings posted on 02 Oct 2012, 16:07

Until you can add songs previously bought or downloaded to the cloud from your computer. You can't touch me. Not even close. Sorry but try again.

36. buccob posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:10 5

iTunes is what kept me from iPods during the whole mp3 Boom... Maybe I grew up old styled, but I absolutely love drag n drop... even though it might be a little more work... I feel in charge of my files...

But I understand the people who likes iTunes... it is just not me...

And for Android we have Double Twist anyway

89. Pings posted on 02 Oct 2012, 16:35

100% iTunes kept me away from iPods and playlists too. Because I am old school. The thing is they say it's easier to do when it's not. It's actually harder. Although iFans will believe any crap Apple tells them.

52. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 01 Oct 2012, 20:42 1

Good comparison, iron curtain it is.

69. remtothemax posted on 02 Oct 2012, 00:47

uh...mine run just fine on mp3, i'm not exactly sure where you are having problems
the stuff i have bought from the store is aac, but i am free to use, convert and transfer mp3s
unless my ipod is somehow malfunctioning

3. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:32 5

why do we have to adopt apples software? why shouldnt apple adopt android software? because you know that may the case, tryna get android to be like apple when in reality apple needs to be more like android! all we (android) is missing is jelly bean and premium builds on our devices........thats just the way i see it

14. MichaelHeller posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:59 2 5

Because iTunes is still a more popular content store than Google Play, that's the argument. People have spent a lot of money in iTunes over the past 10 years. People haven't been buying Android devices for Google Play, but people have been buying Apple hardware because of iTunes.

18. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:09 4

yea ok if breaking you guys out of that ecosystem that you are so in debt too then maybe it could help those users in a great way......

also "everybody" may not be buying android for google play but you best believe a lot of people look forward to the play store and having that type of store in particular when choosing an android phone........

34. MichaelHeller posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:08 4 1

It's the same reason I expect to stick with Android unless something really changes my mind. I've spent a lot of money in the Google Play Store. Sure, the music and books could follow me, but the apps are an investment I don't want to lose.

Similarly, iTunes has been around a long time, and a lot of people have built up a library of music and such. It's also a big reason why the Kindle Fire has been successful, even though it has glaring limitations compared to a full tablet: people have invested a lot in the Amazon ecosystem.

The Nexus 7 has done a lot to push the Google Play brand, so I can see the trend changing, but we're not there yet.

It may not be the best reason to stick with one platform over another, but it's one that a lot of people consider when choosing whether or not to stay with the platform they've got.

37. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:16 2

I understand what you are saying........people invested alot money into the apple ecosystem and that makes it pretty much impossible to leave!......I understand that

But people buying apples product for itunes is not "soley" the main reason why the want it......ITs jus something they look forward to having when making that choice.....Same goes with android, people expect to see the Google Play when they turn their phone and get it up and running....

All i was saying is if this is a way to help iphone users to escape that ecosystem that apple has embedded on them then it sound like a good idea

66. MichaelHeller posted on 02 Oct 2012, 00:02

I'm not saying that people make always make their buying choice based on iTunes. I'm just saying that from Apple's perspective, iTunes is a tool to get people to buy hardware. It's not the hardware sales that are driving people towards iTunes.

30. Jelly_Bean posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:46 8

iThink you r wrong MichaelHeller.

iThink people buy Apple's hardware because it looks cool (even for few months though).

I haven't heard anyone buying an iPhone or any other hardware because it has got iTunes rather heard (I'll buy because its cool to own Apple's hardware)...!!

70. remtothemax posted on 02 Oct 2012, 00:49 1

well, to be honest, it was why i got an ipod years ago when i first got an mp3 player

32. Stuntman posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:54 1

I can see a benefit for someone who has iOS devices wants to switch to an Android device. Right now, you have to purchase and install all of those apps again. If iTunes on Android allows you to download the Android versions of those apps without having to purchase them again, it will make it less painful for users to switch from iOS to Android.

4. AlexYouOC posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:34

5. Allen3697 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:37 1 5

I LOVE iTunes and it's where I keep all my music and where it will always stay. I would buy an app for iTunes. Heck, I would pay 10 or 20 dollars for it because iTunes is a great music service. I'm not asking to be able to have my Android act like an iPhone, I just want to be able to play my music.

10. Non_Sequitur posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:42 1

Check out Amazon MP3. You'll change your mind about iTunes. One of the main reasons I choose Android over iOS is because of iTunes. I hate iTunes, lol.

42. oister85 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:46

Yeah amazon mp3 player is awesome

6. AppleConspiracy posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:37 2 1

And the role given to Woz as a "good guy at Apple" continues...

15. MichaelHeller posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:07 5 1

or at least the "good guy that was once at Apple, but is now entirely separate from the company as a whole"

74. AppleConspiracy posted on 02 Oct 2012, 02:46 1

I cannot resist the impression of mediasphere as a scenography for some kind of play. Lately, Woz is becoming the symbol of something inside of Apple that has the voice of reason to te tech world. It's obviously something artificial, a role that media gave to him, and we could see that everyday in news, that tells us only the things about how Woz was against some Apple's strict principles. It's what people want to hear, because those news are "aware" of symbolic war between Google and Apple that has nothing to do with technology.

8. Auggie69 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:40 8

Itunes...... NO THANK YOU

13. doejon posted on 01 Oct 2012, 17:55 7 1

16. jstoned posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:08

Wow someone who works for apple that doesn't endorce comunism. I like the guys ideas. Too bad they will never come to fruition.

35. MichaelHeller posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:09 2 1

He doesn't work there. He helped found the company, but he hasn't worked at Apple full time since 1987.

17. InspectorGadget80 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:09 3 1

No thanks Mr. Woz i used to own a crappy ipad that only lasted 2 years. Plus YOU CAN'T KEEP THE SONGS u purchased which is highly stupid i found that out after i unistall the shytty itunes the hard way but i'd rather use free apps that LETS U DOWNLOAD MUSIC STREAM they let U KEEP YOUR MUSIC FOR FREE

71. remtothemax posted on 02 Oct 2012, 00:51

well you can, you just have to get third party software to convert them to mp3 or whatever

20. edpad90 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:19

The only reason I think why Wozniak would want that to happen is because of all the free music he may have through itunes. Im sure android is his favorite OS and he wants his imusic in it. lol

43. oister85 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:50 1

You can transfer you music from iTunes to any media player device, you just have to know how to do it

21. frustyak posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:21

It's an interesting idea, but it's never going to happen.

23. lyndon420 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:28 2

I see no point in bringing itunes to Android. Up until now, Google hasn't relyed on apple for any services and they sure as heck better keep it that way.

26. gallitoking posted on 01 Oct 2012, 18:35 3

are you sure about that? fonzy

40. lyndon420 posted on 01 Oct 2012, 19:28 2

Pretty sure yup. Aaaaeeeyyyyyy! (as I do my jukebox trick)

65. gallitoking posted on 01 Oct 2012, 23:59 2

Google maps depended on Apple users for years, ask Google

79. lyndon420 posted on 02 Oct 2012, 07:16 1

Apple users submitting map suggestions to Google is not a service provided by apple. Try again.
