Windows Phone may have more market share than iPhone... in China
0. phoneArena 17 May 2012, 20:57 posted on
We've been seeing a pretty interesting trend in the recent numbers from around the world - Windows Phone is starting to gain traction, just not in the US. A little while ago, we saw that Windows Phone gained market share in the UK, and now it looks to be doing the same in the world's largest market: China...

i wouldnt be too surprised if the numbers were closer to what microsoft is saying... i dont think china appeals to the mass high end market like the US does.. and apple does not have their lower tiered phones there, so it makes sense

"Windows Phone is starting to gain traction, just not in the US".
If you're going to write such an inane comment, why don't you also, state that Sprint and Verizon (the biggest network) aren't really supporting WP and maybe, just maybe, that may have a bearing on the lack of sales in the US. Stop giving half baked statements without the full picture. But then again I could be the one (most likely) totally off base.

It's a statement of fact, and a pretty generous one given the WP market share in the US.
The point of the article are the worldwide numbers. The reasoning behind the US numbers can be found in other articles. It's called staying on topic.

Micheal are the 3gs and iphone 4 available in china?

Yes, the iPhone is available in China but only the rich Chinese people can afford to buy it. Perhaps that's one reason why WP is outselling iOS.
When the cheap Samsung Windows Phone Minuet and cheap ZTE Windows Phone Orbit hit China, WP sales will still improve further.

When you are in China "doing well" making 2-3 an hour in american, yet the iphone still costs 600+ in american, there are very few that can afford it.
WP7 has a huge advantage price wise in china since most people will never own an iphone. Thats why its still a real "status" symbol there.. because you have to be pretty well off to have $600 to blow.

Again, don't get it twisted. Like most of these articles about WP there always seem to be some snide comment about the OS. My point again, which I do believe is FACT as you put it. If Verizon the largest network and Sprint would support WP I believe WP would be doing much better in the US.
The writer of this article decided to point out the WP wasn't doing well in the US and I pointed out that if they are going to write such critiques they should tell the full reasons and not make it seem as though it's all MS's fault.
No, duh I did read the article and I did realize it was about the world wide numbers. Again, my issue with these types of articles they always have to try to put down WP. Would this article be any less readable if that comment was left out about the US? In my opinion - No. But for some reasons most of these writers have some notion to always try to provide some negative aspect to WP.

"Hey, we're outselling the iphone by 1%! Pay no attention to the Android elephant in the room!"

The same goes for Russia, according to this :http://wmpoweruser.com/windows-phone-devices-outselling-iphones-in-russia/ . I can only hope this trend continues, Windows Phone is quite good from what I've seen and I'd like for it to make a bigger splash, competition fosters innovation, more consumer choices and all that.

I have to agree with you. I have used all of those phones as well. WM beats them all. I'm not sure what the big deal is about customization. I have done that on Android(s) and the further you get away from the pure GUI the more problems you have.

Okay, gang, before I post the following statement and link, I know that WP is not soaring to expectations. I realize that the slow growth is truly SLOW growth, and that for the investment Microsoft has poured into their OS, one would hope a better showing for WP Mango devices.
This is not the first place I have heard that WP is doing really well in a short time in China. WP has moved up from basic below 2% into the 3% - 6% range in the US in a year. There is good evidence that not only the Nokia 900 but the Titan 2 are both selling well. (Okay, the 900 is selling well, the T2 is selling okay. Leave me alone, It's my post.) And this link is a serious step ahead in the moral victory department:
According to these numbers, WP7 is outselling BB7 devices. Understand, this is not current handset users, of which BlackBerry is still quit a bit ahead. This is simply NEW handsets sold. Of course, this is much more a testament to how far RIM has fallen than any surge by WP, but it really shows that WP is gaining traction.
If Verizon and Sprint had been sold on getting a decent WP Mango device on each of their network, I really think that we would see it pushing really decent numbers. All of the Trophy and Arrive owners rate their devices really high, and good word of mouth is starting to pay off. But, with only the 2nd and 4th largest carriers giving Nokia's and WP's the time of day, these slow growth numbers may be the best they can do.
But, positive is positive, and we will take what we can get....

I dont why...but I like you dude :)
Anyways the numbers will only improve with the arrival of windows phone 8...

Why, thank ya A.G. I do my humble best!!
Seriously, I am really excited for WP8 phones. I am still holding out hope for that 10% of marketshare by years end. It may be only for the last quarter, but I think it could happen by all the upwards trends in sales.

If it would have been Victor H, then he would still rant about the 2% market share of windows phone...

This is the best "creative statistic"/BS I have seen for some time. I live in China and the iPhones here are everywhere. This is a status symbol so everybody is trying to have one. The only WP I have seen here is in the hands of my Finish colleagues :) WP does not have the cool status. The persons who can not afford the iPhone, or simply know that it is not good value for the money choose local/Samsung Android devices. And that is for new smart phone buyers. Heck here Symbian is still going strong and E71 is still being sold and used massively.

i call your post BS. if iphone is everywhere then where is its market share. and if we look at the global market share, by your IQ most of the people cant afford an iphone so they buy android.
"WP doesnt have the cool status". this tells a lot about you. so think about yourself before calling others BS. btw i am an android fan.

I call bulls**t on WP outselling iPhones as well. As Michael has rightly pointed out, the only source of the news is a non-Chinese website allegedly quoting a Microsoft executive. 'Nuf said.
