Windows Phone 8 "Apollo" shown tested on a Nokia Lumia 900

0. phoneArena 03 May 2012, 17:27 posted on

We received a rather murky shot of what is claimed to be a Windows Phone 8 "Apollo" developer build being tested on a cyan Nokia Lumia 900. Microsoft's upcoming version of the Windows Phone mobile OS is supposed to be the one to usher the platform in the era of multicore chipsets and HD screens, among many other improvements.

Learn to type, then learn to read. Apollo will be opening up interop access which means alot of the restrictions that made Windows Phone 7 so secure, at the expense of the consumer, will be lifted. I just hope they have a good plan to keep security high.

Seriously. I like what im seeing with the windows handsets, and I have a feeling Apple's going to introduce something awesome this year. HTC's ONE series is the only Android thing impressing me right now.

Yeah, I agree. The SGS3 got impressive benchmarks and probably is the fastest droid out there, but it didn't capture my heart like how the SGS2 did.

I'll probably get the OneX (RGB screen) or the Xperia S (8MP). I was hoping the SGS3 would obliterate them in my list, but I now I feel like thinking about a Note too.

so when you wrote this I'm assuming you didn't see the videos showing what phone could do aka way more than any lame HTC that wioo need an update the day you pull it out of the box

Phones are constructed weeks or months in advance of their sale date (as are most consumer products!), yet software is typically a constantly updating thing. Every smartphone I've purchased in the last 3 years has had a software update out of the box to get it to the latest version, since the manufacturer can't put the software on the phone while it's in its box

i get they need updates but htc has always left something out with in their builds the evo horrible batter and glitchy couldnt mirror like it was supposed to evo 3d updated 5 times 3 weeks after release and still ended up being a horrible device htc sensation i loved it but htc boot up screen shot when hitting home too much lag with sense htc mytouch slide 3g horrible memory capacity mostly for all these battery life has been poor selling phones for the past 5 years for just about every company has shown me this

@Lboogey6
No no no. I'm not saying the HTC One X and Xperia S are better phones than the SGS3.

What I'm saying is the SGS3 isn't too far ahead compared to other flagships.

When the SGS2 was released, it was the undisputed king of the Android realm, only to be dethroned by it's bigger brother, the Note.

Now, the SGS3 is not too far ahead of its competitors.

That might not be a Nokia Lumia 900. There's no buttons on the bottom of the phone and there's not FF cam either. If it's a real photo, this might be a prototype or a refreshed Lumia 900 with WP8.

Still very exciting! :)

What do you care about "free" since you still pay for the device, not the Android itself?

There are custom ROM's for Windows Phone too, and Homebrew apps.

I wouldn't say "lack of hardware" since the phones are doing really well for themselves, you're just looking at a really optimized OS (Windows Phone) and comparing it to a Really unoptimized OS (Android) which more often than not need all that horse power to function smoothly. And I do actually believe I've seen a CPU and GPU in there somewhere.

And the multitasking is there, not just the same way as in Android :-) But hey, instead no force-closing of apps, freezes or surprising reboots comes out of it. Windows Phone is just really, Really stable.

Geez...the person holding the device was so disappointed by the GSIII reveal, that they decided to try to stir up some buzz by photoshopping a non existent screen on a 'device' with no volume or screen lock keys, capacitive buttons, or the Nokia and/or ATT branding, and then claim it's Apollo.

It's gonna be a long summer.

Smooth I've course its not even a full OS
Like Android... Windows ios are same. Lag force close does
Not exist on high end droid handsets. Does in the
Midrange.

Cut and paste has been there since the NoDo update, I believe.
As an Android (Sensation 4G) and WP7 (Lumia 900) and Symbian (Nokia C7) owner and user, while I appreciate the capabilities of Android, I believe 90% of smartphone users would be just fine with WP7 (as long as it had the same apps as Android, or similar ones, which there mostly are, just not as many), especially with its ease and pleasantness of use. Android's great, and I like my Sensation, but it's a pleasure using the Nokia. Not just because I haven't had random restarts or unresponsive instances, and I haven't had to wait for the launcher to load after using a full-screen application, but because it's clever, straightforward, and it works. Single favorite thing in WP7: web browser.
I still prefer Symbian overall (weird, eh?) and feel there's a lot more potential for it, especially if some of the elements from WP7 could be integrated into it. My next phone purchase will be the 808 PureView

It is good for Microsoft, and Nokia should think of a great hardware to try to beat Galaxy S3, because even for me a fan of Nokia, Samsung's new phone is very interesting.

Leaks, forgeries, and photo shopped devices.... ahhhh, the season of rumors....

I am more interested in the list of upgrades to the OS and the list of devices that will get it, or at least some form of it. Also, I am waiting to here what happens as far as the manufacturers putting pressure on MS to allow some customization.

You can keep your "screen shots". We will see plenty of it's sexy looks at it's release.

To be honest, I don't even care to see what hardware it will be out on yet. I'd like to see what WP8 is all about first, and then I'd be able to shift my attention to new hardware and upgrade paths for old hardware.

Maybe we'll be able to cut and paste properly this time, that would be an amazing upgrade.

And maybe they'll go all out and enable screen capture.

If WP8 is being tested on a Lumia 900 then there is a really good chance that first Gen device will be eligible for the WP8 update. Another reason why I believe first Gen devices will get the update is because Microsoft wants their platform available at all price points, just like Android and iOS. Remember Apple still sells the 3gs. Plus the newest Windows Phone, Lumia 610 uses a variant of the first Gen Qualcomm Snapdragon and I don't think they would have just made it to turn around and abandon it.
