Because in corporate world you die when you show mercy to your competitor. And Nokia has kept open an option for them, to pay royalty fees. It IS their right.

Yep, since Nokia can't fight against Samsung or Apple, they attack the weaker (RIM).

It's a food chain, the stronger eat the weaker.

Perhaps HTC would be their next target, hope not.

If it doesn't defend itself, it can be open for attack from others. While I am not a fan of patent trolling or trying to stifle competition through litigation, reasonable defense like this with the easy and open offer for royalties is a fair course of action. Nokia is notorious for sharing its patents at a reasonable cost, so this should be no different. If Nokia acted like apple, then it could have had pretty much every other cell phone on the planet be rendered unsellable except, of course, their own, but obviously they haven't, and I respect that.

Like I said in the above comment, you can not understand the psychology of companies from a normal user point of view. Imagine yourself being in shoes of a major shareholder and member of managerial panel of some company.
What will you do if you hold something that you rightfully own and the other party is set to grab some of your market share using that? Will you sit and watch and lose your market, while your company already in fragile state?
