Will RIM stop selling Wi-Fi products because of Nokia?

0. phoneArena posted on 28 Nov 2012, 05:12

It looks like Nokia wants to prevent RIM from selling Wi-Fi products through a U.S. court, by enforcing its arbitration award. RIM will be able to continue selling BlackBerries equipped with Wi-Fi only when it reaches an agreement with Nokia as far as royalties go...

Don't be surprise. Soon, Apple is going to patent suing for patent violations.

Why does Nokia kick a company when its down?

4. eisenbricher posted on 28 Nov 2012, 05:48 9

Because in corporate world you die when you show mercy to your competitor. And Nokia has kept open an option for them, to pay royalty fees. It IS their right.

yeah showing mercy shows youre weak

9. someones4 posted on 28 Nov 2012, 07:18 2

also because they are having a hard time to compete with Samsung and Apple, they picked on RIM. Maybe even HTC

Yep, since Nokia can't fight against Samsung or Apple, they attack the weaker (RIM).

It's a food chain, the stronger eat the weaker.

Perhaps HTC would be their next target, hope not.

They did want to take HTC to court at one point, but dropped the charges

lmao... can't help but laugh at your and valdo's 'Analysis' xD When it comes to patents there is no big and no small contender. Even a single person can sue an organization.
I thought you'd have learnt a lesson from Apple vs VirnetX chapter.

yea, because Im sure Nokia holds the patents for Wifi. They do not.

If it doesn't defend itself, it can be open for attack from others. While I am not a fan of patent trolling or trying to stifle competition through litigation, reasonable defense like this with the easy and open offer for royalties is a fair course of action. Nokia is notorious for sharing its patents at a reasonable cost, so this should be no different. If Nokia acted like apple, then it could have had pretty much every other cell phone on the planet be rendered unsellable except, of course, their own, but obviously they haven't, and I respect that.

Oh my, fight of "les miserables"

3. MC1123 posted on 28 Nov 2012, 05:31 2

why is nokia doing this? why will they stop someone... especially RIM...

my guess, nokia need to bring down RIM's BlackBerry first, since RIM and its OS is still on top while nokia and its OS and WP isnt.. so they need to ban RIM so that they could replace its spot...

but hope its not true! nokia shouldn't do this!!! these two companies need to rise up again and gain back its position as the REAL LEADERS of smartphone industry!

Like I said in the above comment, you can not understand the psychology of companies from a normal user point of view. Imagine yourself being in shoes of a major shareholder and member of managerial panel of some company.
What will you do if you hold something that you rightfully own and the other party is set to grab some of your market share using that? Will you sit and watch and lose your market, while your company already in fragile state?

Think people, THINK!

LOL

Nokia and RIM were racing down the hill
and both of them will reach the bottom of the hill in 2013
The real question is WHO'S FIRST

6. dromon posted on 28 Nov 2012, 06:15 3

It's not about stopping RIM. I'ts about money and licensing fees. I'f RIM tanks they won't get any money anyway. The best thing in the long run is to get an agreement, like apple and nokia or other companies. The only winners in long processes are the lawfirms.

What Nokia is doing that;s right if they think they should get royalties...

This is not samsung vs apple case....

Nokia already sued Apple Inc and got a billion USD and Apple is paying Nokia 500mn/year

20. phil2n posted on 28 Nov 2012, 19:05 1

Nokia will settle for agreement and not for suing. They are not troublemaker

21. lolwoot posted on 28 Nov 2012, 19:27

Nokia only preventing RIM from using wifi products, much better than suing IMO

Will RIM stop selling Wi-Fi products because of Nokia?

In a word, no. They just want a cut. RIM is about to stop selling wifi devices about as much as they are about to stop making keyboards.
