Why did Samsung destroy 600,000 pebble blue battery covers belonging to the Samsung Galaxy S III?

Now that Samsung has confirmed that there was a problem with the pebble blue color "it invented," and the special coating it used on the back cover for the Samsung Galaxy S III, pictures of the cover show white blotches on the part...

delaying the phone for a few days and delaying it for over 6 months are not the same... and no, refusing to delay the phone for a major issue like the antennas being zapped out by touch, is a bad bad move.

It would have been better if history was reversed.. if samsung didnt stop production to fix a minor battery door flaw, and apple DID stop production to fix a very major antenna flaw.

wouldn't it better for this argument to find out about this flaws in preproduction and not days after before launch day. or after launch day.. both are bad.. not from Apple or Samsung. the top 2 makers.. should take care of this in a stage that doesn't affect consumers

actually, i am quite in agreement with you.

yes, it is company's reputation, and i think their move now is already great to ensure consumers' satisfaction since the moment they unbox the phone.

But this delays the phone, the cover is user replaceable, why can't samsung release the phone first and then giving another cover later on?

They don't need to spend money on destroying it, it saves costs.

And if someone thinks that releasing a blotched product like that is bad, well, if samsung owns up and honestly telling the customers that they will be given a free replacement, i don't think that can be a problem.

In addition, we'll have one spare cover just in case the other one gets badly scratched or breaks! :)

I rather wait for the not so important cosmetic fix than to wait for the phone altogether longer.

Seems costly to issue out replacement covers. Shipping costs, shipping materials, not guaranteeing that the backs would be recycled properly, etc...

Judging by the amount of people who opt for darker colored phones (especially among the male population) even when a white option is available, I would vote for Samsung making the right move here. I hope they get the proper coating figured out. A lot of people are afraid that a white phone will scuff/scratch/get dirty a lot easier than the dark version, or at least be more visible.

I don't think we'll have to worry about scratches too much considering its not a paint coat but the material itself. At least that's what a previous article on here mentioning the phone was made out of Polycarbonate led me to believe.

Good job samsung, ensuring customer satisfaction should be given priority. Some companies reluctant to consider it, all they think is having a huge profits. Some even blaming it's customers for inproper use of its products. We consumers always think and want a product that will give us satisfaction and contentment. I like also pebble blue, if that's the reason why it is delayed, I should be patient to wait, that way my money I spent is really worthy enough. Other companies should follow samsung, as what Allan said that if there's one thing that you can't put a price on, it's a company's reputation.

I say this is a smart move; rid the issue/problem before it expands into something bigger. I'm sure most people prefer to receive a product already complete, rather than having to deal with replacing something or the product itself, which will cause more of a hassle on both ends.

A good joke. Samsuck doesn't have reputation. They are a punch of design thiefs. They know how to make good parts, but have no clue how to make original good looking design. All they do, is to produce designs others are using (slightly modified ofc.)

Apple forced them to not clone themselfs, so they called lawman team and there we have it. GSIII Designed by lawmans.

Samsung did the right thing. People need to quit being so antsi. They are proving that they have come a long way from the cheap junk phone & electronics dealer they used to be. They want "prime" status, and they are acting like it. Higher standards says they are making the right move.
Besides, if its a simple manufacturing defect, then popping off 600k more backs wont take but a few days.

And to answer earlier statements about why they dont just send them out now.... because then they would knowingly be sending out an inferior product. Also, its much more expensive to individually send backs to each buyer (and a much bigger headache) than it is to just rebox their phones at the plant.

I don't believe they are doing it for free. Samsung, knowing what they are, will simply add add the cost of extra cover with each sgs iii.

they cant. they have contractual agreements with carriers to sell the devices at certain prices to them. They are going to eat the cost in hoping that the positive press spurs more sales.

For carrier branded they can't but for unlocked and non carrier phones they surely will. These phones will be sold more worldwide, sufficient to recover their loss. That's quite a big heart from Sammy.

i still doubt it. Your talking something that costs them a few pennies per phone. There is more cost involved in the labor to get them physically replaced than making them. If they really wanted to be sly, they could just ship off the back covers to the carrier warehouses they reside in, and make the carrier do it... which would save them a bundle.

If they raise their prices, it wouldnt be but for a couple of bux at the most. If it sells for $602 instead of $599, is it really a big difference? But, again, I really doubt that will happen.
