Good analysis of a bulls**t analysis, Michael. The reasoning you used in this article is exactly the same kind I used to determine that no, Motorola would never be stupid enough to patent troll Android or other OEMs. They would be shooting themselves in the foot.
Yet CNN is insisting on this scare mongering, declaring that the "user friendly iPhone" will also fill the gap left behind as all the other manufacturers RUN AWAY!!!! from Android.

Probably best to not even start the discussion of TV "news", which is essentially just entertainment (which may or may not be entertaining), and almost never informative.
I've said it before, I'll say it again, the US needs to adopt laws like the UK where stations like MSNBC and FoxNews would be deemed entertainment channels, and not be allowed to advertise as news or be listed with news stations. Of course, in doing that the only news stations left in the US would be CSPAN and BBC.

People that keep this fear mongering of "google is going to control android through motorola exclusivity" crap have no idea how android works and why its so big. Its not about any single device or company sales.. its about being on EVERYTHING and EVERYTHING. In order to give moto some huge preferential treatment that pisses off other manufactures or give them exclusivity to android would be the exact opposite of everything google has been trying to accomplish with android.
and it would cut them off at the knees.. permanently.

It's not even a lack of understanding Android, it's a lack of understanding Google. Google doesn't do business like most companies do, because most Google products aren't an end-game. Most are just routes to the web and Google ads.

Indeed Google gains from as many users as they can get and not just exclusive services its why they push apps for as many OS's as they can even if they keep some neat tricks for their platform their main plan sticks the same to get as many from ads as possible

Actually, BBC had a article where they said it was likely Google would start making their own hardware. And seeing Samsungs reaction to this, by hiring software developers, i think it is higlhly likely that Google will start making their own hardware.

It really does make sense, that Google will start making their own hardware, it is a no brainer.
Google doesn't spend 12.5 billion $$$ on buying Moto and then don't do anything with the purchase.
bada is already the number 5 OS worldwide, but i do think this helps bada, because Samsung will start pushing bada more than Android.
Seriously, think of it from a nuetral perspective (i do).
Google spends 12.5 billion $ on buying a hardware company that has lots of patents, but also of course makes hardware. They will of course use the patents they hav purchased, but of course they also want to take advantage of the hardware they have bought as well.

Are they likey to tweak moto in some way shape or form to make it better? absolutely.
Are they going to do anything to jeapordize their relationships with other manufacturers and hurt android's massive sales? Absolutely not.
Google is in the business of selling ads.. to everyone. making moto the primary phone manufacturer and pissing off everyone else only HURTS them..

That's wrong.
Number 1 is Android.
No. 2 i IOS.
No. 3 is Symbian.
No. 4 is BBOS.
No. 5 is bada.
No. 6 is WP7 / Winmo
No. 7 is webOS.
Maybe WebOS has more market share than bada in the Us, but that is not the case worldwide.

1. Why is your point of view neutral when the only option you consider is Google making it's own hardware? Mostly you want Bada to become Samsung main os in the hopes it becomes popular. Now you must consider many other factors that should be taken in notice when it comes to companies.
-Motorola could have great value as a company but it has little as an Android manufacturing company. Outside US their reputation is low. And they are still loosing money. Also take to account that it's also not the one with the great gainings among manufacturers . Siding with Motorola only and forgetting the others would actually hurt Google' earnings because their population of users will be drastically reduced.
Now lets take for example Samsung. Their.biggest appeal on smartphones is now Android they can brag about the thousands of applications and services the OS offers. They get informed on the new bugs and their fixes so they have to just work on their UI and they have a whole ecosystem and a line of products and their worries are a little. If they cut Android and go all Bada they will have to invest in promoting the UI invest in more features invest in more security so its money money money they will also loose while trying to make their OS competitive, as they have to start from nearly 0 with no community support (compared to Android) and no one who has an idea what's Bada .
Out of Google making Android a moto exclusive or Samsung leaving Android for Bada its only money Los
Now how can Google piss Samsung to the point they will leave? They have said Android will remain open. And Samsung is part of the open handset alliance. If rumors are true then they must also have ICS on their hands for testing.
Even if Google makes only moto nexus is still not a reason for them to leave as they can use the source and make the galaxy S3 or 4

exactly. the top 2 selling android handsets of all time are the galaxy1 and galaxy2.. and the galaxy2 isnt even in america yet.
samsung isnt ditching android. bada isnt going to be a main OS. they may make it for feature phones down the line and keep it alive on the side... but it will never be their bread n butter.
BTW, that picture i made i was thinking of your wish for google to kill android.. lol.

$12.5 billion could easily be just for the patents alone to protect Android and other properties. Moto is also in set-top boxes, which Google would love to get Google TV onto.
Google certainly could make their own hardware, but: A) Google has never been a hardware company, B) They have a lot of hardware partners that they need to keep happy. Imagine if the next Galaxy S phone were Windows Phone 7 rather than Android. That's far worse for Google than the possible gains from making their own hardware.

I could only hope this means the end of Blur, or at least making it an app. But I must agree, there is no way Google will make Android exclusive to Motorola products. That would be suicide. They should even think about changing the name of the company from Motorola. It's a risky move, but one that could pay off big time. Motorola ruined it's own name and it's big comeback with blur IMHO, so this could be the start of a brand new chapter in Shaumburg.

The concept of Blur has always been good, it's just the execution which has been problematic. If they could make Blur run very light and with no glitches, then it would be the second best custom UI out there after Sense 3.0.

I would really hope that either Moto or LG buys up palm and uses some WebOS in their overlays instead of what they have. Sammy and HTC have a pretty solid system built in, Moto and especially LG need a way to vitalize and differentiate from other androids. Blur was a good theory but it was too much damage for too long before it was fixed a bit. And LG's system is a generic touchwiz rip off that is unstable.

If Google software engineers re-wrote the code themselves, great. But it would have to be an app, redesigned with a more updated look and feel, and it still shouldn't call it Blur. I appreciate some people do like it just the way it is, but for me and many others, just the word Blur makes my lip curl in disgust. Motorola software is always horrible. Even my Motorola cable box has glitches that no tech has been able to explain or get rid of. Google need to clean house in the software department and maybe give the design team a stern warning, "You guys could be next if you don't freshen up the Droid line."

As you said motorola could be used to pump Google TV but it can also be the horse Android at home needs. I bet you where impressed with the docks on the atrix something similar could become part of the Android system providing a feature rich system operating from 1-2 devices for everything at home. And creating a media rich experience. Also now Google has a much easy access to new hardware and lead better development. I think out of all the possible way for Google to recover the invested money giving Motorola certain exclusivity is the least lucrative one

@ Michael H. I've noticed the picture for this article has changed twice so far, and each image has gotten progressively more gruesome. Don't get me wrong, I see where your going with it and it's definitely a perfect illustration of why Google wouldn't go exclusive. But I asked a question several weeks ago, as to why I never see a tarnished image of Apple on PA, no matter how bad the news about Apple may be. Yet you always see green robots with devils, monsters, or just beaten and battered. Why can't we see illustrations like this on applied to bad Apple news? Can we see a rotten apple, an apple with horns or maybe a bull crapping out an Apple logo sometime soon? I am an artist, so I would be more than happy to draw something up for you. What do you think?

The problem with the Android robot it's that it has transcended. Unlike the apple logo the Android logo has also become a meme making it more easy for people to consider mocking it or associating it with everything. People can go home and produce variations of the Android robot that match certain criteria with ease look at your avatar as it probably represents "ninja blur". Now when you see apple there is not much corporate meme for them aside from Steve jobs. Now with his complications its not easy to mock him anymore. And I thi there has being some pictures. Also remix and I are the ones to blame for the constant changes done to the picture. Its was done to adecuate it ....

Ninja Blur?! I hate Blur! Many could tell you how badly I trash it on every Motorola related article. If Google pink slipped everyone on the Blur development team, I would gladly purchase another Motorola device. But until then, I will be looking forward to whatever HTC is cooking up for VZW next.
As for the artwork, Apple is the biggest, most universally recognizable meme there is. I know it's a logo, but its probably one of the first examples of a meme, because when people saw that Apple sticker on the back of someones car, in did convey to others the type of person you are. What type is up for debate, but that logo definitly said to this is who I am. At least before the iPod and iPhone, then they were just stickers. But the Apple mem has just taken a shift towards the mainstream and has become what it use to rebel against.
Look at any of the many "iPhone is greatest anything ever made!" type articles we see on PA and you'll see. Apple isn't just a meme anymore, it's the Borg! Yet Brian Tong manages to come up with something different for the "Bad Apple" segment every time. Honestly, it just looks like what people have been saying this whole time is correct. That PA is iPhone biased. I hope that I'm soon proven wrong, but I just don't think PA has the spine to

I actually think the ninja blur may be the best type of blur (the ninjas sure know their code. *cough * compared to regular blur) not my intention to offend but every time I see a ninja robot I believe its ninja blur they say new updates make blur better I'll have to see. About the apple meme we are most likely to mock at the users and Job's rather that the whole company so not everyone is willing to go and mess with the logo. I don't think a picture makes pa biased towards apple some post might do. It's why so far I like MH (sorry but didn't wanted to misspell his name) I argued few times ago about the comparison of everything including the iPhone and I have to say that the photon vs evo 3D makes me consider my opinion or an article written regarding battery power on dual core Android phones that didn't match any of the reviews done about the devices before. Remember phonearena has several writers that post news and their opinion varies depending so many stuff also the page targets certain traffic between posts and one of the best ways to do it is by looking for people who desire to post and argument. And for that there have to be workarounds it's how things have to run sometimes

Actually, I had just read Peter's comment on how google should just forsake all its partnerships and make phones directly through motorola, and I made that picture to illustrate it. :)
We all know i sit in the android camp, so there isnt some conspiracy, I just thought it was funny and the original pic could use some sprucing up for the subject. Not bad for 10 mins worth of work, huh? :)

The first image change was because I didn't think I had done a very good job with the original. The new image is because remixfa offered to make one up, and while it was more gruesome, it was certainly better than what I'd made up.
I can't really comment on Apple on PA. I mean pro-Apple people like Taco and Miz will tell you that our site is completely anti-Apple and pro-Android. We've got a few readers who think that bada is the best and we don't do enough to cover that angle. And, we've obviously got some Android supporters with their own opinions.
We're not actively on one side or the other, we're just reporting the news. This image fit this story. When an Apple story needs a shocking image, I'll be sure to drop you a message.

No, I agree. If I were to illustrate this story, the two dismembered Androids would have been my choice as well. It fits that particular senerio. What i'm saying is what's good for Android, is good for BBOS, WP7, WebOS, iOS, and Bada. Before Google bough Motorola, the last few Android stories have been so bad, from having certain products banned to the malware infestation articles. The illustrations with all of those stories reflected the tone of the articles very well, Android fan or not. But I've read Apple articles about journalist being treated as criminals for doing their jobs (It's not Gizmodo's fault some absent minded engineer left the phone in a bar), the iOS security patch that caused more security issues, and fear of competition Apple displays with all these lawsuits. All of these articles beg for an illustration to match, let see some of that. I just don't think Apple should be off limits.

I kind of agree with protozeloz. It's not even a matter of the other companies being off limits, it's that the other companies have limited options for their logos. The best that can be done with Apple is either a worm, or just a rotting apple. And, even that is more than can be done with the logos for WP7, BB, or the others.
On the other side, the Android logo is more of a mascot, and (much like the Android OS itself) can have a lot of personality injected into it. I mean take your user icon. You don't see that level of customization and personalization with any other company logo. (P.S. don't be surprised if you see a column from me about this issue and the Android mascot sometime soon.)

To me Its easy to do anything to the Android mascot from showing it all rusty to giving it lightsaber and Jedi power (there is even an optimus robot already) when it comes to stuff the robot can be used to do virtually anything witch makes him into something people remember and have fun with. And that's not a bad thing that green robot its part of their success. People here looking for Android devices will think twice if they don't see a robot on any sales. It has completely outdone the original logo

I think google want to have the combination of software and hardware. To. Create a better expeience on the upcoming android platforms. We are going to see one OS for both tablets and smart phones(android ice cream sandwich), so why not optimise it with the hardware? That's mu humble opinion.

Has Microsoft had problems with Windows PCs by not having specific hardware to optimize the OS? Google strategy has always been to get Android on as many devices as possible, that means making the OS as broadly compatible as possible. There will be some hiccups, and some hardware manufacturers that don't build quality handsets, but Google wants to offer choice, and that means keeping it open.

Yes, performance varies from pc to pc, and microsoft windows has so many versions of the same os (home, professional, ultimate) on the other hand, mac has one os. The iphone is still a very good device. The difference in iphone devices are storage memory, so not much difference. Andriod evolving fast, yet still young. Ill wait and see if ice cream sandwich will have a big effect on the android platform. Let's wait and see. A good step google made with motorola. Let's hope they use it well.

I think this still boils down to the simple difference in company aims. Apple wants big margins and revenue, that means vertical integration, a closed system, and deep ties to iTunes. Google wants OS ubiquity, so all search results lead to Google ads.
Regardless of variations in performance, Windows is still the dominant desktop OS. The same will continue for Android. So far, Google doesn't seem to think the potential gains from closer optimization with hardware is worth the hit to market share. That's why the Nexus line of devices are niche devices.
