When is big just too big?

Remember when yesterday’s 3.2” resistive touchscreens were considered to be really pushing the envelope in terms of screen size on phones? Sure our perception might have conformed over time, much like with most things in general, but at what size do touchscreens need to be in order to be classified as too big?...

The perfect size screen for a phone in my opinion is 4". I remember using the Samsung Galaxy S for the first time and it was just the perfect fit in my hand. Putting it in side my pocket was also nice. I could still feel it, but it wasn't like carrying around a brick. I think the upper limit of what is comfortable would be the HTC Inspire at 4.3". That's when I felt like I was kind of stretching to keep the phone in my hand. But because it was so thin, it wasn't too bad in the pocket. Anything larger, I wouldn't be down for. I still want my smartphone to be mobile and I remember how much of a pain it was carrying around the HTC Mogul and HTC Touch Pro.

agreed the perfect screen size to me is between 4'' and 4.3'' depending on how think the phone is

5" is perfect for me because I have big hands (and a big dick btw). Unfortunately, there aren't many good devices at this size so I go with HTC ftw at 4.3"

I agree as well. I own the Atrix 4g and the 4 in screen size is perfect. Movies look amazing, browsing the web works great and plenty of space on the screen for gaming. I held the Infuse at the ATT store, it is an amazing piece of equipment, but for a guy that is only 5 foot 7, my hands are not that large so i could probably stretch 4.3 but that is still pushing it. So the big picture that i see the manufacturers are trying to create is that there is a phone out there for everyone. Big hands, little hands, midget hands or whatever. Either way, I can still appreciate the variety.

I like 'galaxy s II', even with its huge screen. Ocos, some peeps will definitely hate 4'' plus phones. It all boils down to choice and purpose.

4" is the sweet spot - especially in the form factor of my Moto Atrix. I also have the SGSII and while I'm magnetically attracted to that brilliant 4.3" SAMOLED+, its just not the size phone I take out drinking beers with the boys.

I still think 3.7 does the trick. A super high end phone with a 3.7 will give all you 4" and 4+" phone owners pocket envy!
If I am at home or in the office I have a PC or Tablet. If I am on the road I like to travel light and only need to be able to "check" things like email and wikipedia or imdb etc...
3.7 with a great camera and great screen IS the answer.

I disagree, i dress baggy straight up gangsta style, so my pockets could hold a tablet if i wanted to. Might be a tight fit, but i would get that fucker in there and walk around with a wierd bulge looking like I am happy to see ya....... LOL

Perfect size phone screen for me is 4" - 4.3". I have a thunderbolt now and I love the screen size, but wish it had better resolution and daytime visibility. If it is sunny out you can forget it. I tried using an iPhone after having my TB and even though I didn't have trouble seeing it outside on a sunny day and the resolution was better on the iPhone, the screen was way to small. I missed my TB, so I went back to using the TB.

I have a desire hd. I gotta say that right now I'm at both hands. I hate it. But it makes up whenever I see how awesome its screen is, though SLCD. I prefer one that has 4".

3.7'' - 4.0'' is the best size for me i think
i have Desire, Desire S, Galaxy S (Sold) and Incre S
wonderfull size & nice color with sharpnes
below 3.7" is too small, maybe just for call only
3.5" is to economic,

although im not a big fan of htc, i think the thunderbolt is the perfect size phone. the thing is, big screen's is always a plus the problem is the extra trimming surrounding it.
12. devonblue4u (Posts: 40; Member since: 12 Apr 2011)
If they can figure a way of trimming the wasted real estate (Dell Streak), 5" displays would be viable in a smaller form factor. We have 2 I9000M SGS's (4"), and constantly zooming and re-orienting the web pages is quite annoying. I don't consider the Galaxy's size a problem, as I can one hand the phone easily and I can't palm a basketball. I really woulf like to see what Asus has up it's sleeve with it's new phone solution. The came up aces with the Transformer Tablet, let's see if this is the same game changer in the phone market.

Remember back in the day when phone manufacturers were making phones as small as possible? I remember a motorola phone that was about 3.5" total... the whole phone!!! You had to dial with your nail cause the buttons were sooo small. Now they have the mentality that bigger is better, which isn't true. I think the overall concensus would be that 4" is the perfect size. Right now I have the Galaxy S Captivate on 2.2 and it's great. The only way to influence these companies would be to not buy the bigger phones, then they won't make them. Shame the Galaxy 2 is 4.3" :(

Have to take aspect ratio into consideration, too. It was interesting viewing an iPhone 4 and Atrix 4G side by side. The 16:9 Atrix 4" display was the same width as the 3:2 iPhone 3.5" display, obviously the Atrix being a bit taller. I think a 4.2" 16:9 would be the sweet spot, which would take the Atrix edge to edge.
15. vette21man (Posts: 351; Member since: 06 Apr 2011)
I don't think the on-screen controls argument is valid. On-screen controls in a real-time game are atrocious on any touch-screen phone. Genres like Fighting games need a real controller with tactile buttons and just don't belong on touch-screen phones.
16. dara (unregistered)
What about 4.2 screen of SE Arc?
And 4.3 incher of sgs II?
They are both praised for their ease of use due to aspect ratio and slim/lightweight phone frames they are incorporated with.

I've been dying for a 4.3 but for me 4.5 is perfect. I use my phone for apps, web browsing mainly, email, youtube/vevo, picture viewing, and text so that much real estate will amazing. I can't imaging ANY of those features being better on a 3.7 or 4" screen.
I barely even make phone calls on my phone so for me its more like having a mini entertainment tablet with me at all times. The Infuse 4G may have a big screen but it is by no means a "big phone".
45. america123jeff (Posts: 36; Member since: 14 Apr 2011)
what do you mean its not a big phone? Its one of the biggest phones out there! It is a big phone which is what makes it so awesome. I cant wait to get the SGS II. I wish it had a 4.5 inch screen with qHD resolution but 4.3 super amoled+ is great too

I just got an HP Veer. It runs webOS. its H+ speeds are awesome and its battery life lasts me 2 days. all these new bricks die in about 4 hours.
Small is the new big!
19. steelman (unregistered)
btw the veer size is 2.5 inches.

I think they should keep making phones in all screen sizes myself. I'm a big guy 6'4 with hands to match, and for my Droid X fits perfectly into my hand. The perfect reason why they make phones in varying sizes, cause for someone like me a bigger screen is really nice, things like clicking and typing are easier on a bigger screen. Now for me I wouldn't get a streak 5, I got one as part of the Dell promo and sold it, but it was one of those things were the phone was too big for me to use with one hand comfortably. For me 4.3 is about the most perfect size.

After having my EVO for over 10 months and holding an iPhone 4 again, I'm really dissapointed in 3.7". Whenever I use an iPhone I am constantly going "wtf?". It's just too weird to go back to a smaller screen once you've experienced a bigger screen.

That's exactly why your ex girlfriend does not want to go back to you :)
I guess size does matter after all :)

well she decided his 10" where too much much for her and decided to go after your 3.7"
dont worry she will be back where she belongs :)

wait, i thought the iPhone 4 had a 3.5" screen... I may be wrong though

perfect phone screen for me is 3.2'' . I always love 3.2''. I tried 3.5'' (Iphone 2 from my brother and Iphone 4 from my friend) and 4.0 (Samsung Galaxy S from my friend) a lot but . . . I think they're too big for me. :D
I'm going to buy a tablet :D 8.9 is my choice :D
cheer and peace !

I used to own a 3.2" Samsung Jet, and i am know using the 3.5" ipod touch 4g and 3.8" htc trophy. When i first held my phone, i thought that it was a tad too big. But after a while, it kinnda grows on you.
Now, when i use my gf's 3.2" Samsung Galaxy 3, it feels odd and uncomfortable. I've used a 3.7," 4.0" and 4.3" phones before. In my opinion, 4.3" is too big two use with one hand. 4.0" feels big to me too but at least i can use it with one hand. So to me, the best screen size would be 3.7" to 4.0". 4.3" is cool and all but its not something i would like to own. 4.5" is just riduculous.
27. Bob (unregistered)
A very relevant article today. I handled the 4" phone and found it to be a lilttle small for my hands. I think 4.2" (less than oft available 4.3") may be the sweeter spot considering the new qHD screens coming out. Toshiba has infact come out with an even more crisper screen very recently.
28. k1ng617 (Posts: 245; Member since: 13 Oct 2009)
I want a 5in QHD phone without the ridiculous Dell Streak 2in bezels! Someone with some smartphone manufacturing know-how answer my call! Samsung, Moto, HTC!
29. Ralph22 (unregistered)
A 4.5" display is not too big.
A 5.2" case is.
As displays begin to go edge to edge you lose all the bezel at the top and bottom and side. A 4.5" display will almost fit in a phone the size of an iPhone 4.
31. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
I bet these same fandroids were the same ones who complained about how big the 1st gen iphone was. They're also the ones who complained how big the ipad's screen is. It's funny how they change their minds as soon as Apple's rivals releases a device with bigger screens than Apple devices :)
32. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
Just like they were so sure when they said that resistive touchscreens are better than capacitive. But later on pretend that they never said it at all, now that all android devices use capacitive touchscreens, lol.

4" all the way!! Some people say it is too big, but anywhere between 3.5" to 4" is good, preferably the biggest in the range :)
34. WirelessCon (Posts: 309; Member since: 11 May 2010)
The Infuse is great! I never thought a large phone like that would be so sleek. I had the old 3.7" Desire (CDMA) and loved it until the Infuse. 4-4.3" is probably optimum for a superphone user focusing on multimedia communication, entertainment and art. The Galaxy S II is going to scream "Buy me!" but this Infuse wonderful.
35. WirelessCon (Posts: 309; Member since: 11 May 2010)
16:9 is the way to go. I'm surprised Apple is stuck in the old standard TV ratio. Apple is better than old TV, they should step up and do 16:9.

My 10.1" tablet does video and voice calls for free wherever I go, and it works with my Bluetooth headset. Bigger is better for smartphone tasks, to a point; if it can't fit in your pocket, it's too big. After playing with the Streak, Infuse, HD7, and other models (including the iphone), smartphones should be no less than 4" if you're doing anything more web-intensive than e-mail. The iphone's screen feels dinky, and the phone itself just feels too small to be comfortable (though I have large hands). Maybe that's why the iphone is more popular among the female portion of the smartphone market?
38. skainer (Posts: 20; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
I own the galaxy s with the 4inch display, it works out great with its slim profile. I would consider moving up to a 4.3, 4.5 and even a 5.0 as long a they keep the lightweight slim profile.
43. iSlackerz (unregistered)
It's hard to disagree that a 4" screen is probably perfect for the majority of users. I'm on the taller side (a hair over 6' 4") and have large hands. After holding/using both the Atrix and Samsung Vibrant, Epic and Captivate, they all felt just a little small for me. Though I must say the Epic's keyboard helped it feel better in the hand than the others.
For me, a 4.3" screen is about perfect, I can easily reach across the screen to press icons with my thumb. I do think a 4.5" screen would be perfect it's probably too big for the pocket.
What I think matters most in phone size is choice. I can have a 4.3" phone while the little lady can use a 3.7" phone. With choice almost everyone can be happy.
49. SMARTGUY (unregistered)
4.3 is the size i prefer. And 4.5 is the most i can fit in my pants w/o lookin funny. The screen size for iphone ( i use itouch) is too small these days. When u tried to play action games ur fingers can cover like 40% of the screen which is bs. If the iphone increase its screen size i might just go get one.
1 fact im concern about is how slick the body of the phone is is gonna be
53. dickenson (Posts: 8; Member since: 03 May 2009)
I love the big screen phones. Hate how they drain batteries too quickly though. But for viewing web pages and watching HD movies and viewing looking at pictures from friends social network albums and even just ordinary stuff you do on and with a phone. Big screens phone display cannot be beat. My HTC Inspire 4G with it's 4.3 inch display is like an Apple iPad at half the size. Perfect.
54. snowgator (Posts: 3205; Member since: 19 Jan 2011)
4.0 to 4.3 for an all-touch screen is perfect. Larger then 4.3 gets uncomfortable. 4.0 seems really the sweet spot for me, unless I decide I want a physical keyboard. But the best part is that right now you get everything from a mini-cooper (HP Veer) to a Full sized F-450 Super Duty truck (Samsung Infuse). That's kinda cool ....
56. RORYREVOLUTION (Posts: 2961; Member since: 12 Jan 2010)
To me, screen size is not the issue. It's the size of the device itself. For example, if you compare the Droid X with the Thunderbolt. Both have a 4.3 inch display and yet the Thunderbolt manages to be shorter than the Droid X. Too much wasted space on the Droid X causes it to be a very tall phone. I mean it's almost the same size as the Samsung Infuse and that has a larger screen of 4.5.
The iphone also suffers this, even though it is only 3.5. If the wasted space the phone has, it could easily have 4 inches as some samsung galaxy phones are nearly as short and they have 4 inch displays.
It really comes down to stop using so much stupid carrier and maker logos and more room for the displays themselves.
61. lastyear53 (unregistered)
4.5 really should do it!
64. heyhey (Posts: 8; Member since: 20 Dec 2010)
interesting, they used to try to make phones as small as possible.
65. AndroidAppLabs (Posts: 1; Member since: 29 May 2011)
5 inch screen will be the perfect size. It won't be long before a phone can be all screen edge to edge. With basically zero bezel a 5 inch screen will be about the same form factor as a 3.7" device is now.
67. jake (unregistered)
i believe "perfect" would be two sizes, 4" with 0 bezel width and just enough bezel for the camera, speaker, ect. on top and mic on bottom. this one would be 4:3 ratio.
the larger brother would be 4.2-4.3" with similiar bezels but have a 16:9 ratio.
both need to have the 4 buttons hard-keyed to the sides like so. left side towards top vol +/- and search, the top be home-back-screen off, and right side be menu, camera.
another issue to me is thickness. the thinner the better? no. you can grasp a phone better if it has a little thickness as well as carry better cameras and batterys. i'm not saying i want to tote an epic around but there is a perfest thickness as well, and, to me, we are getting to thin.
