WhatsApp voice calling now out of beta for BlackBerry 10 users
No one can accuse WhatsApp of being a slave to any particular platform. The Facebook-owned messaging app has recently rolled out its voice calling feature to Android users and iOS users as well. Also on the list to receive the update is the Windows Phone version of WhatsApp. What about BlackBerry? The new updated version of WhatsApp in BlackBerry World, version 2.12.1.2, happens to include voice calling as well as some other new features. Previously, only those rockin' the beta version of the app were able to use voice calling.

With the update, BlackBerry users can make free VoIP calls to friends and family (even if they are overseas). Tapping Search from the actions list allows users to instantly search for individual messages, chats and contacts. Fonts on the app now match what is being used on BB 10.3. On the BlackBerry Classic there is improved support for navigation and focus. Location messages show a larger map preview. Unknown parties that you are chatting with can have their information saved to the contacts list, and you can have a custom ringtone announce an incoming call from WhatsApp. Pictures, audio and video you receive from WhatsApp can now be filed by using year and months sub-directories. The update adds counts to the Favs/Groups/Contacts tabs when pulling down the list past the beginning, and of course there are the proverbial bug fixes.

Kudos to WhatsApp and Facebook for realizing that BlackBerry users are a social bunch and probably have an "us against the world" attitude. More developers could probably learn a lesson from WhatsApp's inclusion of BlackBerry 10 users to its voice calling feature.
