What's the story with the new Windows 8/RT apps?

Microsoft made the strategic shift to ARM-based processors because of their superior performance/power consumption ratio, but programs written for x86 processors can't be ported to the ARM's silicon architecture. This is the greatest disadvantage of RT slates so far, but could it be a blessing in disguise?...

Apps are everything but most are useless. I'm sure many download thousands just to feel good. Its like a drug.

@lubba, can't agree more with you. Can you imagine that a single user can have upto five facebook clients while he rarely make use of one. Show-offs like cr@pple fanboys will always boast of fart appstore.

Um, Intel AND AMD processors are in Windows 8 computers.
Don't forget the underdog.
Also, excepting games and production software (for the most part), apps are mostly ports to a website that dies more than the app anyway.

I believe the programs will get there but for myself, along with mist consumers I feel, I want the ability to use the programs that I have grown so accustomed to. Because of this im thinking of getting the uglier Acer w510 because of its price point, release date, and ability to run legacy programs. The surface is the better looking tablet in my opinion but at that price for an RT device, I just don't see it.

I think they can and they will. Windows has a great deal of support from developers and people who want something "unique" as they say. So, yes I think it will do wonders for the platform as more and more people drop a dime or two buying those Win 8 devices. And while everyone else can crack as much as they want on the software, it is about to get a whole lot better very soon.

Yes, they'll have a ton of apps just within a few months. But IDC. All I want are the big name apps that android and ios have and no, I don't just want a knock off. I want the apps that all my friends have so I can play with them. Do this Microsoft, and you'll be ok. Remember its what's popular, not just quality or quantity.
