What would make a Nokia Lumia better than the Samsung Ativ S?

"Every great show needs a warm-up act." – that is what Nokia's Doug Dawson confidently stated on Twitter soon after Samsung announced its Windows Phone 8 powered Ativ S smartphone. Bold words indeed, for they imply that the upcoming WP8 Nokia Lumia smartphones will somehow be better than what Samsung proudly unveiled on Wednesday. But is that really possible?...

i don't think so
samsung relies on google/android
if it wasn't for android samsung would never be so powerful
but their phones, in hardware terms are not as spectacular as you may think
for sure not in design department (they are copycats but the funny thing is that their waves and windows phones looks hellishly better than their android phones)
Windows has limitations in hardware specification.
All manufacturers will have to obey to those rules.
Design and apps left.
Nokia has great maps, samsung doesn't.
Design: Nokia is much better and more innovative.

All I know is that I have an upgrade coming up, and if they don't come out till October 29th like some sites are reporting, then I don't know if I can wait that long... so many other things coming out... who ever strikes 1st will likely get my dough...(I mean ios,wp8, android etc.)Price as always is important too.

Yes, if the Pure View tech is not included in their phones, then surely Nokia will loose a lot of customers. Even a 21MP cam would surely do.

it will be included but no the powerful 41 mpx.
it will be downgraded version probably. Something around 21 mpx or even better version from N8 (which is great enough)
I just wish Nokia hadn't shared with their maps and let it be a common thing for every wp manufacturers.
Maps is still one of their best advantage over the rest.

Nick: you forgot one of the most important thing over here.
Most of us customers values originality and innovation. Thats where Nokia shines. Samsung is just a cheap thief copycat trying to hide its dirty pants while pretending to be as a cool guy.
I will NEVER buy ANY Samsung products. I don't support thiefs.

808 PureView camera, xenon+LED flashes, microHDMI, stereo speakers, all the features from Nokia Maps and Drive on Symbian, USB-OTG, 2GB of RAM, 3000 mAh battery, 64GB + microSD, Nokia Rich Recording. Should I keep going?

Slim, sleek and powerful is what i would want for the new Nokia to be.
Just a below par level on any hardware will be a huge disappointment. I don't think there will be a problem with the software if the hardware is beefy enough.

I'll take any 14mm thick slab if it has the 41MP camera in it, thank you very much

I am happy to see so many People interested in Windows 8 smart phones the thing is Guys and Gals can Microsoft and it's OEM partners advertise the Right way for more People to buy Microsoft Windows 8 Smartphones. Windows 8 smart phones now have all the high Tech Goodies except a retina display and can even go Quad core if an OEM wants to do that. the New Windows 8 software has better features than window 7 series smart phones have. people who buy Windows 8 smart phones wont be buying low tech smartphones anymore. hot Damn windows 8 phones wont get sued by Apple ether. I want to see the what the Nokia "ARROW" design looks like the Nokia "PHI" uses a modified Lumia 800/900 Body style, The Nokia Arrow is said to be a body style that "Verizon's "Nokia windows smartphone will have and is said to have a Pure vue camera. that;s the one that might beat the Samsung ATIV S except in screen size this is all good for Windows smart phone Fans.

yeah... for me 3.5" to 4.2" is the most standard... smaller than that and bigger than that is just stupid... i got big hands and got no problem texting with a 3.5" screen... but having a "phablet" while calling, its a real joke....
73. jackhammeR (Posts: 1548; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
the thing is plain simple
phone= maximum 4,3 inches
tablet= from 7 up to 10 inches
Those are my rules. Obey or die:)
I just really don't understand the reason stands behind the idea of having phone with display bigger than 4,5 inches.

im with you!!! but i think having a 4.5 is still acceptable but 4.8? its just stupid and weird!
on tablet, bigger than 10" is annoying!!! i mean the very reason you buy a tablet is for comfortability than bringing a loptop!

folks I am worried if the Samsung ATIV S will ever make to market because it looks like an Iphone 4S if you look at it full face View. the side View and back view are OK
but the front view is too Iphone to me. check it out for yourself. Apple might try to get them on a Iphone design patent infringement. Samsung might win it though because 3/4 of the phone looks no way like any Iphone

no the galaxy series really looks like the iPhone 3GS dress code... but Ativ S doesnt look anything like it! it was a better version of the S3.. we all know S3 might be the best android device known yet but it looks are just so cheap.. i feel like samsung isnt inspired while designing S3..but they are so inspired while designing Ativ S..
but i dont think Samsung Windows Phone might take off like the Nokia Lumia if they are still the big android player and a big android dog!
i never saw a samsung WP in my place!
it might be true as the saying goes "you cannot serve two masters at once" but thats the point that its a company.. they need to divide its strategy.. they should divide it to 4 parts --- one for android, one for windows phone, one for tizen and one for feature phones... so that they could concentrate on just one goal per division... like nokia did the lumia and the asha division...

"A failure to bring PureView technology to Windows Phone 8 in a timely manner would be a huge disappointment for many, us included, and could spell a disaster for Nokia's future"
So we're clear on that yet. Nokia is dead.
Because an bloody 8Mpixel camera while the entire 2013 Android line-up consist of 13Mpixels and even Nokia's own symbian devices STILL have better cameras (808 and N8). They f**ked up... AGAIN!
