What do you dislike about the Galaxy S4?

0. phoneArena 12 Apr 2013, 09:37 posted on

Ah, the Galaxy S4! It's definitely one of the very best Android smartphones around, and yet, we're sure that there a a good number of people out there who hate it. By the way, there's a lot people who also hate us, but that's because of our money. Anyway, the Galaxy S4 sure has its enemies, but why? What could be wrong this seemingly perfect Android smartphone? Hm, when you think about it, there are some things that can irritate some users. How about the cheap-feeling plastic? You buy an expensive gadget and it suddenly feels like your 5 year-old son's toy-phone...

Of course the design, the S4's design still remains the same. I prefer Sony Xperia Z and HTC One, cuz they have gorgeous design and premium feeling too!

And yes, I said before plastic is not a big deal, but plastic will give you a very CHEEEEEAP feeling. So, the Samsung Galaxy S4, that's a nuh-uh (no) for me! :P

The plastic feels thin and low end, the design is disappointing, the TouchWiz is heavily designed for children so please I hope Samsung makes it more professional looking in the future. That's all.

i don't like the the overuse of cheap feeling plastic, i don't like the rehashed design and i don't like how much Samsung focused on adding more software gimmicks other than improving in areas they come up short in but other than that it's a solid 2013 flagship. great display, impressive camera but it's just such a tock update and i know Samsung can do better than that.

1. Cheapish look and cheap feeling plastic
2. Boring design, you get a 99$ samsung or a 750$ they look the same
3. Software gimmicks, bloated cartoonish UI
4. Poor speaker and phone call quality

Get rid of the button and a more metallic feel body... love the features but not exactly loving touchwiz... These are the 3 things that kept me from getting a SGS3 and most likely the same things that will keep me from getting SGS4.

i Had a chance of holding the S4 this morning here in HongKong Fortress Shop, the S4 octa core version...i must say its too damn good it feels great holding it,the black color and pattern are beautiful..and the guy at the shop loaded it with quadrant it tops 29300 wow...it feels better than s3 and the htc one...thin lightweight and the ergonomics are way better than S3......i must say you hold it in your hand first before making any comment......and i say i hate nothing.....

I was always one to complain about the plastic as well, but I got to play with an S4 yesterday and I must say that they have improved the feel of it. It's still plastic but the phone does have a higher quality feel than the S2 and the S3. There's more gloss on it and it doesn't feel as flimsy as the previous models, plus the metal around the edges helps. Also, even with the 5" screen the phone is surprisingly comfortable in the hand, I'd have to say even more so than the S3.

Hardware does seem to have improved some but that's about it, other than that I just felt like I was playing with a more comfortable Galaxy Note 2. TouchWiz is just starting to bore me personally I guess. The S4 seems like a great phone and all but I don't think it's going to pull me away from picking up an HTC One.

I don't mind the plastic cover, it's Samsung choice since the beginning and it doesn't look that they are going to change it in the near future. The problem is that even with plastic you can make a cool design like the Nokia Lumia series, the 920 looks great even for being a 1 year old phone. But comparing the S4 to another Android phones only, the HTC One and Sony Xperia have better designs, they look like premium phones.

That should be the only thing that I dislike, because I like the specs, the size of the screen and the new version of Touch Wiz.

it looks too much like but worse than S3 i think.
I dotn mind plastic it make it light and gives me the option to change batteries and MicroSD
And i dislike the fact that they could not make the home button capacitive(it should be optional i think, I mean turn off the capacitive / physical home button )
it does make sense to have 2 capacitive and 1 physical button i want to be able to touch the button lightly to reach home pressing is too much effort. That could be one of the reasons i dont buy galaxy S4 i live my galaxy S2 better.

The reasons why i'll keep my Note 2 instead of buying the GS4

1. I like the 5.5" screen on my note 2.
2. It lacks the stylus
3. The US versions are not going to have the Octa core processor. Now if i weren't in love with my Note 2 and like the size i would buy the GS4. But since i am, Im not going to buy one. Im holding out for the GN3 which should be right around the corner

i dont judge book by its cover...it may not look as good as htc one or xperia z but its very ergonomic and versatile, both in hardware and software...removable back and having reach to the battery is very useful...amoled is great with colour tweak options....air view, s health, smar scroll, pause... Put anodised aluminum in place of plastic...promlem solved..

I'll just hang back and see what you early adopters say about it. I'm leaning more toward the Note 3. Maybe neither of someone else hits one out of the park. But in order to do that, it would need a replacable battery (or minimum 3500mah if not) and microsd slot - so probably not HTC.

My only beef is that its taking so damn long for Verizon to announce the damn thing. Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense that the octa 5 version isn't coming to the states although it does play nice with 4G LTE. They initially claimed it wouldn't work with LTE and that was why we weren't getting it, but now we know it's not true. I'm really hoping that is why Verizon is taking so long cause they are getting the octa 5 version ;)

I hate the plastic, i don't really care about a removable battery....i don't want to have to wrap my phone in a brick to preserve it..we buy thinner sexier phones for a reason, not to just wrap it in a brick. Samsung has killed it with loading there phones with good specs, but the reason i can still sell my ipod or ipad 2 years later and get a good deal is because the build quality last, it feels like $600 dollars in my hand. With the success of The galaxy line you know it wouldn't have taken much effort to wrap all what they had into a premium quality shell. The S4 looks like a toy, I'm grown. -peace out-

1) The build, i won't ask for a metal back (even if it would be nice), just make the plastic matte, like HTC's One X. This "Hyperglaze" back is just terrible : slippery, shinny, glossy fingerprint magnet.
2) The design, i don't want a Samsung Galaxy S3S, look at what the competition is doing, HTC, SONY, NOKIA...
3) The camera bump, i HATE it!
4) Rear facing speakers, speakers should be placed either on the front or the bottom.
5) I hate the fact that the bezel isn't black, even in the black model the bezel have this ugly texture and look greyish
6) Please, can any smartphone manufacturer build a 4.3" phone? isn't your smartphones "Designed for humans"? I like that HTC stayed with a 4.7" screen, even with a bezelless 5" display, one handed usability is still almost impossible.
7) Not a big fan on Amoled displays, i know that you can change screen calibration but i find AMOLED displays dim, and F@#K PNETILE
8)The UI is terrible, Samsung is adding cool new features to Android, but wouldn't that be great if they added all that with a HOLO stock android UI, like Motorola. I find Touchwizz cartoony and ugly. And there's too much bloatware...
9) There is no real innovation when it comes to the camera, i'm maybe asking too much but i want a 3MP FFC, OIS, Better microphones, 41MP Pureview maybe? :)
10) I find HTC's camera UI and features to be better than Samsung, sure you could do all of what HTC allows you to do but you'll need sepearte modes : For example, i want to use best face on the S4 but someone walks in the picture, i can't use both best face and eraser in the same time, while on HTC, i take a Zoe and do all of the editing later. Also i like Zoe's alot.
11) I don't care how thin the phone is I WANT A BIGGER BATTERY, but 2600 mAh is still great.
12) I want Waterproofing
9) I want better call quality, and YES i do make PHONE CALLS on my smartPHONE.

Either load stock Android & offer your "skin" as a download via Google Play Store. Or offer dual-OS (& unlocked) boot loader. Not the most profitable set-up but it would make me and a lot of others happy.

Funny how this article comes out the day after i actually got my hands on one to play with...

1. The new feel to the s4 is nothing to be ashamed about anymore it has the metal side lining just like the iphone 4 and 4s have but that goodness no real glass on the back, although the plastic on the back feels like it is more higher end feel i guess you can say

2. Touchwiz, i have nothing agianst it but if there was an option to complete get rid of it i would and make it a straight nexus like device... touchwiz seems too cartoony like someone else has said... although i do have to say atleast the user interface doesnt get as boring as an ios one... and yes i do currently own an iPhone 5 and note 2

3. Didnt get to try the speaker so cant say much on it although the features of looking away and the movie pausing was working flawlessly

4. NAtive wireless charging on the back, the fact that the device doesnt even have wireless charging back included is a let down granted it will help my reps sell accs

5. More colors, white and black seem a little to generic although brings back the point about accs

I'm disappointed, I feel it's unfair to me, I feel it's unfair to really best phones that simply can't advertise like Sammy. Why would I hate it cause it's the best? 1. Yep. Plastic when ALL other high-end phones aren't. IDK
2. TouchWiz does look cartoonish.
3. Wireless charging capable out the box would of been nice.
4. Drop the physical/capacitive buttons.
That's why there are other OEM's. Variety.

My only complain is build quality..... I really don't like build quality of galaxy series, all are cheap plastic, and in few months they began to look old...... For two years I'm waiting for premium build quality from samsung, but each year they are disappointing me....... Don't get me worng, two years back I was samsung fan, and used to root for their products more than anyone else, even made lots of my friends purchase sammy products, but seeing their attitude for not making their flagship phones of premium quality, but charging premium price for them is making me angry with sammy.......... Hope they will change their attitude, and will adopt premium materials for their next flagship...........

@andrew cunningham "...but since Lenovo is selling the same Windows 8 as everyone else, their performance shows that it's possible to do well selling the new operating system." - if you look at some recent reviews of Lenovo business notebooks, the reviewer pointed out Lenovo supply with Win7 installed by default as they found their customers wanted Win 7 over W8, and didnt want the hassle of 'downgrading' as they had learnt from previous fiasco of 'downgrading from Vista to XP was less reliable than installing XP direct.

Its not at all that there are things I don't like about the S-IV. I am going to upgrade either to it or the HTC One when they are available. My first HTC was the TouchPro and have had all the EVO's. I have no doubt that the S-IV has the most features (software and sd card/battery), is probably more snappier, and will be easier to root. Therefore, I have been leaning toward the S-IV, but I am concerned with the call quality and screen brightness issues pointed out in the reviews. For me, the One's design, display, call quality, and speakers compared to the S-IV are making my choice a little complicated. I guess I will have to try them both to know for sure.

The design I thought would be different. I mean I know you can't completely do a 180 on a device that is already so popular like the S III, but I was hoping for something more rugged looking. Not so much the materials used, but the aesthetics.
