Watch the Android 4.2.2 update for the Sony Xperia Z
0. phoneArena 16 Jun 2013, 02:46 posted on
The high-end Sony Xperia Z has not yet received the Android 4.2.2 update, but that hasn't stopped some owners of the phone from installing a leaked version of the OS build; a couple of videos show just what we can expect the update to look like once installed on the Japanese OEM's flagship Android model. Another video shows the widgets and lockscreen following the same update...

Why do you hate on everything? Got nothing better to do?
4. mkrmec (Posts: 6; Member since: 26 Dec 2012)
And you have no idea what you're talking about... it compares to One and S4 display easily...
If you make a stupid accusation like that at least tell us why you think that...

I am surrounded by geeks...3 of them own an Xperia z...you don't have to educate me about this

Let's just admit it. XZ;s display is inferior to GS4's and HTC One's. I'm a big sony fan but that display is inexcusable. What's the purpose of putting that kind of display if it does not lower power consumption and the total cost of the product. There's no redeeming factor in the XZ's display relative to the ones found on current flagships.
If we keep telling Sony nothing's wrong, they won't do anything to make their products more competitive. We have to be more objective. Look at how Apple fanboys made Apple technology stagnant. If we love Sony, we have to tell them something's wrong and needs fixing.
Let's just hope the Togari delivers a better display.
I won't be buying a new smartphone until 2016 until Sony comes up with a truly formidable device. If they continue creating XZ mistakes, I'll move to a new company.
I'm really tempted by the S4's display because of the possibility of very low power consumption. LEDs can save power especially if you use only small parts of the screen and if you maintain a black/dark theme.
Hope Sony does OLED displays soon.

What don't people understand? The Z had a screen lottery, so does the nexus 4 and HTC one. Initial shipments in western markets had the inferior screen, thus poor reviews. Even the inferior screen displays were improved to some extent in a recent software update.
Now, the issue at hand, oled. Extremely saturated and inaccurate colours, amazing blacks but blueish whites after a little while. Pentile means the gs4 display is less sub-pixel dense than some 720p screens. Yes, that's not a joke. Burn in. What? Oled is still in its early days, until these major problems are solved, then they fail. IPS can be much better.

Screen Lottery my A-S-S
it's a TFT crapfest technology that isn't supposed to be put on smartphones....There are NO screen lottery as you might own to believe....it is just BAD.......BAD BAD BAD
Have you even compared it with a 1080p ips??? My guess is no you clearly haven't
16. Insignificant (Posts: 190; Member since: 22 Sep 2012)
You've just shown your idiocy and ignorance to the whole world. Even AMOLEDs have a TFT layer. So are IPS. You fail HARD. Hence, all your other comments, for safety reasons, will be rightfully ignored.
17. Insignificant (Posts: 190; Member since: 22 Sep 2012)
Regarding the screen lottery, it's fact, undeniable proof. Even you agree we should flush Gordon for his stupidity.

I DARE you to find a YouTube review which praises the Z's screen quality.
If you cannot find one...then you are in the extremely tiny minority (shills not included)...go get your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist

You don't have the courtesy to either apologise of rebut my points? Get lost you immature troll. You don't have the right to dare anyone. What happened to seeing the phone in real life, eh?

Quite ironic how these cheap ips China 1080p's (like the Zopo C2) have better overall quality than the Z....I am not basing my statements from what I read from the internet...seen it, held it first hand...The el-cheapo ZOPO C2 pwns the Xperia Z in terms of viewing angles, color rendition, brightness levels and contrasts
24. Ralph1987 (Posts: 4; Member since: 16 Jun 2013)
I agree with you that we have to be honest about how bad the display of the Z and ZL are but dude, Sony doesn't have to use OLED like Sammy. First of all, Sony is fond of making water and dust proof phones so OLED is a NO-NO! Don't you know that OLED has organic substances that will surely destroy the phone if it is exposed in wet environment? Look at what Samsung did on their S4 Active, they switched to the same TFT screen Sony used with the Z and ZL. Sony should still use LCD with a better quality than the OLED like IPS or Super LCD like what LG and HTC use. I just hope that the Triluminous screen technology will be on par with the competition. Sony needs to put more effort in making their smartphone screens and cameras give more pleasing results because they have the best designed phones that are even much better looking than HTC phones except for the HTC One that has a very lovely design.
22. anleoflippy (Posts: 337; Member since: 03 Jan 2013)
I'm a Sony user (currently on the ZL) and I have to agree with you. The screen becomes white-ish when viewing at an angle and contrast got obscured.
However, I am fine with that factor as long as staring it head on is good especially after the minor update which actually fix the colours. But there is no excuse that the the screen is not the best in the market. Despite this, I am still happy with my ZL.
23. ArtSim98 (Posts: 3394; Member since: 21 Dec 2012)
Only thing that is wrong with the display is the viewing angles. Seriously nobody looks the display from the sides. Everybody looks straight at it.
25. FlushGordon (unregistered)
NOPE you're wrong there
1. Blue colors are displayed/rendered as purple/purplish blue
2. Reds and oranges are washed out
3. Not as sharp vs other 1080p flagships
4. it's just flat-out inexcusably DULL
38. Potato. (banned) (Posts: 607; Member since: 14 Jun 2013)
NOPE actually you are wrong here.
39. AshishRomea (Posts: 145; Member since: 09 Aug 2012)
Im a Xperia Z owner , after Update the black looks better and so does the colour overall . The only issue anyone can talk of is the Viewing angles. Dont simply blame a phone. Im using this since 3 months now. No complaints.
S4 and One have great displays but when u use all 3 at a time.. u wont really understand differnce except for over saturation on the S4!

Watch the side-by-side comparison of GS4 vs HTC One vs Xperia Z on YouTube. It is clear that:
Z takes the lead, One came 2nd and Last but not the least is GS4.

The Z did very well, much better than I expected. I think it did slightly better than the One. The S4 was the best in that comparison IMO. Also the S4 wasn't on Movie Mode, which is considered its best mode.

No other major manufacturer apart from Samsung has any products updated to 4.2.2 but this is not a reason why we all should have only Samsungs. Particularly considering how small the difference is between 4.1 and 4.2. Though it sounds late, still the Xperia Z will be one of the first devices to sport a 4.2 update apart from either Nexus and Samsung devices.
7. Insignificant (Posts: 190; Member since: 22 Sep 2012)
Seems some people fail to understand that companies like Sony bring a lot more improvements in even incremental updates. I have a nexus 4, what features do I have compared to the Z right now, when it gets 4.2, it'll have way more. Certain Samsung's have 4.2 with the worst ui ever, is that what updates are about? When the 4.2 update comes for the Z, I can guarantee it'll be more impressive than the next major update for the s4 if that's 4.3.
8. Feanor (Posts: 344; Member since: 20 Jun 2012)
Also true. I had swype-like keyboard on my arc since 2011 and years before it made it to Jelly Bean. Also the Xperia Tablet S supported multiple accounts while running ICS way before multiple accounts made it to JB 4.2. There are many other examples of practical details, like Xperia Android builds allow access to one's private keyboard dictionary to add or erase misspelled words which to my knowledge doesn't exist in generic JB 4.2. And so forth....

You are correct, Sony updates do a bring a lot more...if we're talking about bugs. Each update for each phone especially the OS updates brings a whole new can of worms.
As for 4.2 for XZ being more impressive than the next update to S4? Quit selling pipe dreams mate, we both know that's a load of rubbish. Samsungs UI already brings more than any other UI in Android, from true Multi view multitasking to Multi item clipboards, the biggest video codec support etc..., it's the very reason that Android actually has any sort of chance against other OSs, so much so that Samsung TouchWiz to many IS Android as no other maker has made quote the same impact.
Thanks for a good laugh though. :)
33. Feanor (Posts: 344; Member since: 20 Jun 2012)
First, I said that Sony brings more functions than stock Android, not than Samsung. I already know that Samsung Android versions are quite rich in enhancements, many of them quite impressive, others toyish at best. First read carefully, then comment. Second, I have experienced many bug-free Sony updates. The last is the Jelly Bean update for my Xperia P where there are no bugs or lags whatsoever. Sorry that I cannot invent any to continue making you laugh.

The Z was said to be the android device that more iOS users than ever before switched to. Not hard to imagine. Amazing build quality, beautiful design, a classy ui. So against iOS devices, Sony is leading the way. Even their tablet is the first true iPad competitor. Thin, looks good, made well and a proper ui optimised for a tablet with a lot of content available too. Both are even more competitive thanks to being waterproof. The recent Xperia S update was virtually bug-less, late, due to inter-Sony politics, but almost bug-less. It also brought many improved features. Add that to what Feanor said, and your arguments just don't stand.
49. Tsepz_GP (Posts: 866; Member since: 12 Apr 2012)
"The Z was said to be the android device that more iOS users than ever before switched to." LOL! And who exactly said that? Did you get that at the same place you got your "Xperia Z 4.2 being better than Samsungs next update" idea? You are living in one crazy reality distortion field mate. Xperia S bugless??? It can barely record HD1080P vids now, the update actually ruined a feature.
LMAO! Now this is PRICELESS - > "Even their tablet is the first true iPad competitor." Someone is either feeding you a whole lot of BS or you are living in your own little world. As someone who owns an iPad4 and has had a go at the Sony tablets and also owns a Galaxy Tab10.1, Sony tablets are like their phones, very pretty....but that's where it begins and ends, Sony have no true no truly optimized content, and going by the way you go on, you seem to also not understand just how important CONTENT is. I understand, you are more of a Design over Function type guy, thing is most of us want productivity out of our smartphones and tablets and the only two companies who truly understand this are Apple and Samsung, in actual fact in tablets I'd say Amazon are the true iPad competitors, they have it BANG ON with the Kindle Fire series, they are then followed by Samsung. The tablet market is a whole other ball game and is still open to loads of competition and growth, Sony certainly are nowhere near being the best in it though, waterproofing and dust proofing is a great thing though, but they lack in content which is what truly drives tablet sales.
50. Insignificant (Posts: 190; Member since: 22 Sep 2012)
I did say almost. One feature temporarily spoilt, many more gained.
I got the Z information from a source known to have provided accurate information in the past.
Content? Google are doing quite a lot with that themselves. Android has almost caught up in tablets content-wise, in a year or so, it will be ahead. Admittedly, Sony should be doing a lot more content-wise, they have the content, just need to implement it.
And no, I'm not a form over functionality person. But a tablet has to be durable and have a good screen, and also be light enough to hold on the move. The tablet Z is just that. Small apps are extremely beneficial too. It's more media-centric, but android tablets won't be able to replace laptops just yet, and the current android ones don't seem to be trying.
52. Tsepz_GP (Posts: 866; Member since: 12 Apr 2012)
Lol, so it's okay to spoil a feature in an update? Wow, I was always under the impression updates were supposed to IMPROVE exisitng features and functions while adding a few more, at least that's what Samsung do, on top of that its not just one feature, it has ruined 2G data use for many, data encryption is badly implemented, WiFi isn't workimg well in some modes and so on, for an update that has taken this long? That is utterly disgusting.
I do agree, Google are trying, but Apple still has them beat, not just in the QUANTITY of Content but QUALITY, the apps for iPad are in their own league, and when it comes to LOCAL content? Both Samsung and Apple are in their own league, this is why many schools, universities etc... List either iPad or Galaxy Tab as required around the world, here in South Africa for example, Apple and Samsung have a duopoly in electronic education, thanks to iTunes-U and Samsung's Learning Store ,Samsung aren't waiting for Google, Samsung Hub is filling up day by day with localized media be it books, series, movies, music etc... Of your country.
I agree again, tablets cannot replace laptops, not at all, when I want to do a uni assignment I'm either on iMac or my Acer laptop on W7, it's a no brainer. Samsung tablets do combine something great in the tablet experience though, the Note10.1 is like a mix of a tablet, PDA and mini laptop. It takes Samsung's Multiview to a whole new level, allowing MORE THAN 3 apps in one screen, then you get the S Apps like S Note and the Multi item clipboard, meaning I can copy multiple chunks of texted from different places, it all gets saved in that clipboard and I can paste it all in whatever order I want, I just select and paste just like in a PC, Samsung have function and content on lock.
51. Feanor (Posts: 344; Member since: 20 Jun 2012)
Sorry dude but I have to disagree once more. First, Xperia Tablet Z was pronounced best tablet from both Phone Arena and Techradar. Second, if there is one company that can beat everyone else in content is Sony owning their own music, film and gaming industry. All other electronics players have already to pay royalties to Sony for its content. The truth is that at Sony they haven't put their act together yet because they bought their mobile business less than two years ago, but if they do, they will be unbeatable considering that they have their own content to market and they anyway give access to all other content through Play.
53. Tsepz_GP (Posts: 866; Member since: 12 Apr 2012)
There's a difference between having the tools and actually using them effectively. Sony have EVERYTHING, but they simply have not unified it, if they did they would certainly have quite the competitive advantage, but at this point? Nah. The content is there, but not all of it well optimized for their mobile products, and if I'm not mistaken, profits in most of their divisions are near to non-existent.
54. Insignificant (Posts: 190; Member since: 22 Sep 2012)
Like I said, I agree Sony have not implemented content as well as they can yet. However, Sony's shares have more than doubled in a few months. Thanks to Kaz, they are getting together. Soon, they should be able to overtake others, once they are unified. And they are becoming more unified fast. For example, their recent laptops have Triluminous X-reality displays with exmor R cameras. The brand synergy is getting there.
The Xperia S update issues aren't affecting everyone, though no one is saying that should have happened. However, that's not just Sony. People were complaining about the s3 update too.
I think being forced to buy a tablet for university is rampant materialism and potentially discriminatory.
And I still can't see any tablets besides w8 ones as anything but media-centric devices. Multiple items in clipboards is useful, no doubt, but most will never use that on a tablet. They'll do that on their laptops.
Can you at least admit Sony are getting their act together fast? With more up to date hardware and in their recent lineup, more timely updates. And that honami will be a game changer?

lol sorry meant 4.2.2 :P
28. Tsepz_GP (Posts: 866; Member since: 12 Apr 2012)
Lol, it's a race between the Xperia Z and GS3 to see which gets 4.2.2 first, how sad, a 2012 flagship is up against a 2013 flagship in terms of which gets the update 1st, I remember a time where Sony fans were so adamant that the Xperia Z would get this update LOOONG before the GS4 arrives.....lol, must applaud their over optimism I guess.

I own a Samsung s4 and a Sony xperia Z. I like sony but I have to admit it, samsung s4 is the clear winner here not only on the display but everything. Sony still have a long way to go. S4 is just easier and way better to use. But one thing they both have in common, their battery sucks!
56. pyradark (Posts: 788; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
actually NO, they are both in the same pace, but different direction.
S4 still lack of Wow factor while sony is battery and screen
