Today, at Big Red’s CTIA press event, a new partnership was announced in collaboration with Brightstar, a global distribution and services company, and Moorehead Communications, Verizon’s largest premium retailer, to bring out Viva Móvil by Jennifer Lopez. Yes, you read that right folks...

Arent all verizon(corporate or authorized) forced to speak spanish anyways. They will give a kid with a criminal background a job if he can speak spanish over a college graduate or someone with years of wireless experience. Maybe ifi go to france or italy i should continue speaking english and the country will cater to me....no? oh okay so its just the US thats retarded.

this was damn racist event
3. RORYREVOLUTION (Posts: 2840; Member since: 12 Jan 2010)
lol people would be throwing a fit if they made a special event for white people. I don't understand why they would have to make any events for any races when it comes to cell phones. What does race even have to do with it?
4. ThePro (Posts: 26; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
I'd suspect that it is related to speaking spanish, so that the people in the stores speak spanish?
As a Latino, I say that it's sad that we have someone like Jennifer Lopez representing us
50. jcarrigan (unregistered)
as a white person with half my family mexican/african amaerican and the other half white. Im ashamed that we have stooped so low as to cater to a specific language or race.
12. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
And, ironically, this is a "race" created by the American Media because if you go abroad or even to South America it doesn't exist; you're still considered either White (Caucasian), Black (Negroid), Asian / Mongoloid (Eastern Asian), Indian (or, Indigenous) or mixed. U.S.A. is the only country on Earth that makes a language into a "race".
51. jcarrigan (unregistered)
pretty much. american is entirely wayyyy to politically correct for my taste. What happened to just being honest in what we see, its not racist. im white, my first cousin is black, my other cousins are asian or mexican. whats wrong with saying that. now i have to say the white equivalent, or i have to say latino, or african american, or native american. i have a cousin whos family was from belize and he is the darkest man i know and im not allowed to call him black i have to call him belizian?

I'm sorry but tell me when Latino people suddenly became a race. That simply makes no sense to say. Being Latino is more of a country based thing rather than a racial thing. Look at Zoe Saldaña. She is afro-latino. Look at Shakira, she is a White Hispanic. Latino is defined by those born in a Latin country or country that speaks Spanish, predominantly such as Argentina, Bolivia, Columbia, Spain, Mexico, Cost Rica and many more. People born in a Spanish speaking house hold can be labeled Latino, despite the race. My best friend is a Chinese Mexican and all he speaks is Spanish.
And to be honest, this is a good idea. I'm worried for the execution but as for as ideas go, I like it. I know many of my friends parents don't know English or aren't fluid in it. And considering how expensive Verizon is, this plan should have been in the works.
28. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
Sorry Sir, but in ignorant United States of America, a language is a "race". Shakira is not White Hispanic as, that's something also created by the labeling media here in the U.S. Shakira is actually mixed; she is part Caucasian (her mother is White Colombian of Spanish descent) and her Father has some Middle-Eastern influence (but, I'm not 100% certain so, don't quote me). But if you want an excellent example of a White Spanish-speaking Caucasian Colombian you can look to either Maritza Rodriguez or Catherine Siachoque; they both are White. Catherine's husband, Miguel Varoni is of Italian descent by Father and Spanish descent by Mother, respectively. You are 100% correct on Zoe Saldana, she is of mixed Spanish and African descent and she was either born in Dominican Republic or her parents were; not to say that there aren't any Whites in Dominican Republic. In fact, there are many blond or brunette blue-eyed or green-eyed Dominicans. Unfortunately, they are not the ones that make it to the U.S.
33. ThePro (Posts: 26; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
Well, I'm like whiter than most ''white'' americans, when I compare side-to-side (I'm of russian and italian origin), and yet, being born in latin america makes me an ''Hispanic'', I find is horribly stupid.
38. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
That's my point exactly; I am Colombian-American with Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch ancestry. My nose is straighter/narrower/pointier than just about anyone I know; I've even been accused of having had rhinoplasty work (nose job). I've even been accused of being Irish or Russian; I even had an Irish woman once (straight off the proverbial boat) say to me, "gee you're just as white as me, are you sure you're not Irish?"
This is only going to get worse as, most of America is ignorant to the fact that Spanish is just a language (just like English, Italian, Russian, etc) and not a "race".
47. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
You must be one of those half breeds who benefit from being grouped into a language.
52. jcarrigan (unregistered)
dorothy you make a great point.
60. Birds (Posts: 918; Member since: 21 Nov 2011)
Lol, I felt like that should have been addressed because as an afro-latino myself I never saw being Latino as a race. It kind of made me laugh to see people calling this racist over something simply linguistic. Anyone can be Latino (though I say that cautiously). I have a cousin who is extremely dark in complexion but doesn't know a word of English. I also have an aunt who is from Portuguese decent but is Latino as well, being born and raised in Puerto Rico. Where I live now, the stereotype of the Latino "race" is grey eyes, yellow skin, and long curly hair. Most of my cousins turn heads when they are seen in public speaking Spanish but look like a stereotypical black person. It goes to show how uncultured this nation is. But thanks for the Shakira rectification.
62. ThePro (Posts: 26; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
Thing is, when you register for anything (Take AP exams, for example), you have to put ''Latino'' on the race section, I asked atleast 2 people before doing it, and yes, it's latino.
Take the same thing, and put it with state exams, school sign up, services sign up, college.
63. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
You know, it is illegal here in the U.S. for anyone to force you to check a "race/ethnic" box. Even with the U.S. Census, you can refuse to answer if you feel you don't comply with the choices or simply don't want to engage in cultivating the ignorance.
49. jcarrigan (unregistered)
Exactly. we have black history month, we have asain appreciation month. we celebrate cinco de mayo in america, can someone explain to me how its racist to have anything with white in it and specifically in it. thats a very hypocritical. and they should keep race out of it, you strike a good point my frined.
45. terabyteRouser (Posts: 396; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
lots of companies target groups of people. its standard business practices. the only difference is, is that they don't make it an announcement.
5. emadshiny (Posts: 977; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
Why there is no image from back view?!
6. Chakra (Posts: 116; Member since: 02 Dec 2009)
Because latin people can't just walk into a Verizon store and get some product? "Focusing" on a certain race, WITHOUT cultural or race relevance, is just another form of racism. It's technically no different than denying service because of race. Only JLo would associate herself with something so low class.
8. ThePro (Posts: 26; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
People in Verizon stores don't speak Spanish.
But a lot of local artists live between america and their base country, I can think of atleast 3 or 4 of them from my country.
I still don't defend something so stupid as to a store like that. You can just go to a Verizon store in a latino neighbourhood (Maybe get the phone robbed the second you come out, but ok), and buy it from there.
11. johnriii (Posts: 216; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I know five bilingual verizon reps in KC alone. that's in two stores. not to say that it's a requirement, but i know that they know it's a benefit to them to have bilingual people in their stores. this was an announcement they could have made via twitter.
53. jcarrigan (unregistered)
every verizon store i have ever been in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Utah have half the staff speak spanish. the other half are upper managment. in utah ive seen some that they spanish speaking cant speak, understand, or write english!
7. Droiddoes (unregistered)
UM...what exactly is preventing latinos from buying phones currently? What special needs would they have over any other American citizen?
"customers will be greeted by staff that are bilingual"
Ah, there it is.
9. johnriii (Posts: 216; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I REALLY, REALLY hope this wasn't the big annoucement. if so, there are tons of verizon/HTC fans who just jumped off of buildings nationwide.
16. roldefol (Posts: 2855; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
I hate to say "I told you so" but...
The Verizon HTC One is not coming. It just isn't. Not this summer. Verizon is sticking with the 5" Droid DNA (Butterfly) brand. That's not a bad thing for customer choice or for Verizon customers, although it hurts HTC's attempt at unifying its flagships.
18. RORYREVOLUTION (Posts: 2840; Member since: 12 Jan 2010)
Other than a slightly larger display, the HTC One beats the Droid DNA in every other department. Bigger battery, more memory storage(16 vs 32gb), better camera, better processor, and Sense 5, etc.
The DNA was rushed out for bragging purposes of being the first 1080p display on the US market.
19. roldefol (Posts: 2855; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
I think they did a much better job with the DNA (essentially a One X+ with 5" 1080 screen) than the Rezound (essentially a Sensation with 720 screen). The design, quality and performance are solid, and reviews have been stellar. The main thing holding back the DNA is the storage.
24. RORYREVOLUTION (Posts: 2840; Member since: 12 Jan 2010)
Yea that was a major fail on HTC/Verizon's part for only allowing 16GB of internal memory with no micro sd card expansion. Forget about having any apps at all, my music would nearly fill that up as it is. Not to mention, you'll only probably get like 12-13 useable after bloatware and os.
54. jcarrigan (unregistered)
this is what happens when we let politics or race get mixed in with what we all love...cell phones! Rory your right bro the htc one is a great phone compared to the dna. i honestly hope if they ever make a dna plus. that it is at least the same screen size but its kinda stupid to have a phone that is a sequel to a previous phione but have a smaller screen.
10. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
I can't stand that hephyr'; this makes me want to go and sign up with the Nation's worst carrier aka Big Yellow. No one's buying her music, why would they buy Premium Wireless Service from J-Ho'.
Her big claim to fame was being a "Fly Girl" on In Living Color back in the early 90's; almost twenty years later and BILLIONS in plastic surgery makes her some Mega SuperStar (more like StupidStar). Did I mention I hate that talentless plastic surguried' troll. And, what does she know about wireless service anyway? Besides, I've heard her speak Spanish; she doesn't even speak the language correctly. I'm calling Verizon right now to complain!!!
29. ahhxd717 (Posts: 297; Member since: 08 Dec 2011)
Hmm you seem very angry. Who made you a Spanish authority? Your assessment of her Spanish is rather prescriptive. Regional variety, maybe? Geez
30. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
You do mean perspective??
It's pathetic to me when someone, anyone, takes their native language and butchers it. I would say the same about Americans who speak ignorant or uneducated English. Moreover, to here her speak Spanish is like someone taking fingernails to a chalk board; it just sounds ignorant and illiterate!!!
Take from it what you will, Dear Sir!
13. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5470; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
not very exciting for me but this was definitely very cool of J-Lo to do. o:
20. Droiddoes (unregistered)
Gotta disagree with you there, I think she and VZN are just enabling people to stay essentially segregated and driving a further wedge between legal/illegal citizens. I am all for immigration but people need to learn the language of the country they reside in, period. This is just making it easier and removing incentive to integrate into the country they've chosen to reside in.
Blew my freaking mind when I went to target and every other commercial on the TV wall was in spanish, I thought "did I take a wrong turn and end up in mexico?"
23. roldefol (Posts: 2855; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
I agree that it is essential to learn English to be successful in this country. It doesn't matter whether your native language is Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Marathi, or Gujarati (am I leaving anyone out?) Language skills are essential to growth and success. This isn't about legal vs illegal immigration, it's just the American melting pot.
This move may make business sense to Verizon, but it does not help unify the country or make everyone equal.

31. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5470; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
i don't think shopping for cellphones is gonna be any kind of real incentive for mexican americans to learn english...i do agree with you that all american citizens should learn english however.
32. roldefol (Posts: 2855; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
"Should" meaning it is in immigrants' best interest for successful integration. There is not and should not be an official language nor should English be required for citizenship. But I've seen it in business and industry. It is very difficult to get ahead, get promoted and become a leader without fluent English skills.
43. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5470; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
just realized the correct term is hispanic americans.
55. jcarrigan (unregistered)
OMG thank you droidoes! thats what ive been saying! I know its not a popular opinion but hey, whiteys came in a long time ago and kicked the hell out of the indians and mexicans and those winners spoke english therefore everyone else should speak english. if we were invaded right now by north korea and they won then ill gladly learn korean. simple as that, if you lose your territory, you lose your rights. i wish people would stop whining about how they deserve reperations or deserve free wellfare or to not pay taxes just so they can send all that money back to latin american(everything south of the border) and furthermore strengthen the drug routes once the drug cartels get that money. I can play nice with anybody no matter what color they are but you better speak the correct language based on the area. if i go to quebec ill learn french.
14. jlbora23 (Posts: 4; Member since: 28 Oct 2012)
So what now? Maybe I can email j-lo and ask her to please stop screwing us around and get the HTC One because its discrimination to not have it available to the Latino community! Enough drag already let's get down to business...nice try Verizon, thanks for scheduling this huge event exactly one day after the 6-mo anniversarary of the DNA and ending the free DNA promo the day before a butt-load of customers THOUGHT we would receive new of the HTC One release date!
17. roldefol (Posts: 2855; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
Again, eeeeeeveeryone was reading too much into Verizon's announcement. HTC never claimed anything was coming. Just because you really really want something to happen, doesn't make it happen. Verizon will replace the DNA when the replacement is good and ready. That will be some time in the next 6 months, hopefully sooner than later. I would like to see a DNA 2 with stereo speakers and OIS camera too, but I don't expect it this month.
42. johnriii (Posts: 216; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I was waiting for something, but not the HTC One. verizon pulled one on EVERYBODY, especially since the price on the DNA has dropped to an unbelievable $19.99. I was really hoping motorola snuck into the backdoor of Big Red with the Motorola X. but like most, I took the bait.
21. PhoneCritic (Posts: 331; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
I see one problem with this. No one will go to these stores. Why? Because JLo wont be there servicing and answering your questions or selling you the phone. Verizon is using her star power and sex appeal to try and attract Potential male buyers. Aagin if Jlo was in the store dress the same way as she is on this stage and selling the devices the store would be a bigger hit than all the Apple stores combine. Men would flock and spend hours talking about the features of their device and sneaking looks all the time that she turns around to pull something out from the counter or bend down to get a device on the bottom shelf. This will be a fail as I do not belive she will ever spend 1 week working in that store.
25. mydi.maus (unregistered)
jlo is so sexy hmmmm..
39. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
Not, she's about a BILLION in plastic surgery and make-up - nothing sexy about that.
26. myclevername (Posts: 93; Member since: 07 Jun 2010)
I heard they have plans to release an exclusive Verizon J-Lo Android phone called the Culo that will have a screen size of 4 ft by 4 ft...roughly the same size as J-Lo's ass.
40. Dorothy69 (banned) (Posts: 498; Member since: 21 May 2013)
Wish I'd thought of it. You do mean plastic culo; it's not real (contrary to her stupid song).
35. myclevername (Posts: 93; Member since: 07 Jun 2010)
Yeah this concept already exists. And on a much larger scale. You can already buy a computer or a phone or a car or a house without having to speak any English. it's called "Miami"
37. ncv144 (Posts: 126; Member since: 04 May 2012)
You DO know there is more countries in this world other than the U.S.A, and this specifically targets Latin America which if you didn't know is from Mexico south, including most of the caribbean. In most of these countries we speak a language called "Spanish" which may also be known as Castilian. Most of the people here (I'm Latino) don't know how to speak english, and we still want the top gadgets.
56. jcarrigan (unregistered)
yeah thats the sad part. we are slowly being invaded. and its not by the asians which make some damn good food :)
57. jcarrigan (unregistered)
exactly. in YOUR country. lets just keep it there. you dont see Verizon(Brazil) or Verizon(China)
41. JunitoNH (Posts: 708; Member since: 15 Feb 2012)
I love hearing ignorant people speaking, do you know why? Proves my points, they have no clue, nor idea what they are talking about. Let me enlighten you guys, First the US does not have an official language, yes English is the de facto language. Spanish will eventually overtake the English language as the de facto, just a matter of time.
58. jcarrigan (unregistered)
yeah just like the Government will continue to keep the borders open and let drugs and illegals come and go and bring down this country. other countries do just fine without catering to anybody else. do you know how hard it is to become a legal civilian in any europian country? and if your caught being there passed when your passport expries. they ship your ass back home like they should!
