Verizon's Spring roadmap leak shows Samsung Droid Charge, Xperia PLAY coming in April
0. phoneArena 30 Mar 2011, 09:33 posted on
Verizon's ultra-fast 4G LTE network might be up and running, but there is only one handset making full use of those speeds. This, however, will change very soon as the 4G LTE-capable Samsung Droid Charge was leaked with an April 7th launch date…

Why would they release two 4.3" LTE Samsungs (Droid Charge and Galaxy S2) and two 4.3" LTE Motorolas (Bionic and Droid X2) within mere weeks of each other? I'm all for variety, but what about differentiation?

they did say that dates are subject to change. Maybe this is some type of rough draft. :)

I share the same sentiment. It's good that carriers are adopting larger screens for those who need them, but I hope they don't neglect other market segments right from the beginning. There's nothing wrong with wanting or needing a large screen, but not everyone needs such, and many users (like myself) don't want to feel as if i'm carrying around a small laptop.
With that being said, I do like that Verizon is showing a bit of variety in offering several different types of 4G phones with 4.3 inch screens. As soon as they come out with phones that have 3.7 inch screens or less, i'm going to consider jumping ship.

As far as I know the Droid X2 will not be 4G. It will have an upgrade in the screen, RAM, and processor but will be a 3G device. Also the Trophy and the Galaxy 2 have only shown GSM versions at this point. I can't see Verizon launching all these phones at once some of them may be Q4 launches for Christmas shoppers.

As far as I know, the Droid X2 and Galaxy S2 will be 3G. I think this 'report' is mistaken...

I'm with you. I really want the Bionic, but that is a while to wait for me. Why are introducing these single core devices like this? Why not come out with the Bionic for those who don't want an HTC single core device?
23. rayjones09 (Posts: 149; Member since: 16 Dec 2010)
Because single-core is more than competent. And most people are unaware of these phones and their clock speed. In all honesty, dual-core is superfluous.

Fair enough but it is something as a buyer that I care about. I'm not most people. I am an informed buyer, because I choose to research the 250+ object I'm going to buy. I just think it would be nice to have the option early. The major reason I want a dual-core is because I know as a high end device it will be updated. Single core is reaching its end in the high end spectrum. Pretty soon the Nexus One specs will be mid range. Also I don't like the HTC low battery life or the poor update history of Samsung. I am willing to give LG a shot but I might as well get the Tegra Zone gaming option with a bionic. Perhaps single-core is fine for you and makes you happy, but I see the speed and ability and it seems more worth the cost.

I just think there's a lot of confusion in the rumor mill. The May roadmap makes no sense to me. If it's a 4.3" qHD LTE Tegra 2, it's the Bionic. The X2 must be something else, and I doubt it's coming the same month.
Good to see the Incredible 2 listed as Global though.

Now that I think about it, the S2 and X2 don't really have release dates next to them. I think PA is misreading the list and that both of these devices are actually due later in the year. Given how thin both devices will be, they may be waiting for the next generation of LTE chips.
Notably missing from the list: HTC Merge (probably never at this point) and Droid 3 (late summer/early fall). C'mon Verizon, where are the qwerty phones?

April 7 is the Casio Commando, which is the G'Zone, military spec Droid I have been excited to try. Unfortunatly, is seems like a very mid range to low end offering, and may end up not being my solution. (sigh.) Love HTC products, so both the Incredible and Trophy will get some looks from me. Droid X2 is a great Motorola option. The first one was by far my fav Droid from Moto. Hope Otter boxes are available for protection from my chosen profession. This is a fun list, full of options. They may peak past Sprint for our buisness yet. It is gonna boil down to price from Sprint VS rececption and choice from Verizon. I still need a stinking Blackberry release for my Wife, come on RIM, crap out something so I can get off AT&T .....

Can't agree more with the last part of your statement. I know the list is a little unofficial, but its so depressing to see no new RIM products on there...
7. snowgator (Posts: 3288; Member since: 19 Jan 2011)
They have been really, really quiet, haven't they?
6. AAABall (unregistered)
The Casio Commando! Thats worth a look!
13. Sniggly (Posts: 7182; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
Considering Casio's reliability record, it might not be.
15. snowgator (Posts: 3288; Member since: 19 Jan 2011)
Soooo .... Casio G'Zone series has been unreliable? Curious .....

*sigh* Why can't there be a non-Motorola dual core phone coming?
12. derp (unregistered)
Why cant there be a bunch of non-Android phones coming. They might as well just send customers a bunch of empty boxes because the productivity will be exactly the same. Android = fail garbage.
14. roldefol (Posts: 3178; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
Thank you, Mr. Fanboy Sir, for that delightful and thought-provoking gem.
I suspect Verizon WILL have several powerful non-Android offerings by Q3, including the iPhone 5, Pre 3 and maybe some other Win7 phones. This list only includes confirmed phones.
16. Buzzcock (unregistered)
Well he does have a point. The contant release of new Android phones every other day is becoming very stale and stagnant. Most of them all look the same and have no individuality.
17. roldefol (Posts: 3178; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
Which is why I responded...to his first sentence. Yes, Verizon should diversify more. AT&T embraced Windows 7, and no matter what you think of that OS, at least it's something different from the iOS or Android experiences. Verizon didn't want to take that risk, but it's time for them to expand their options. I also think an HP-Verizon alliance would be good for the industry. More choices means we all win, not just the Android fanbase.

HP-Verizon alliance sounds good to me, I am a Palm fan and think we should have more options and this could be one.

You must be blind, even if that Casio phone isn't pretty it's still looks miles apart from the other Android phones coming out. Why don't you bitch at Apple for not stepping up with the variety and release cycles of their iphones? Oh that's right, Steve Jobs makes demands of you, not the other way around.
24. rayjones09 (Posts: 149; Member since: 16 Dec 2010)
Leave Apple alone!!! Nobody is ever talking about Apple until some random opposing fan brings it up. People that do that only make Apple more famous so dude, chill out man. It's gotten old and it's time to give it a rest.
26. Misanthropos (Posts: 56; Member since: 03 Aug 2010)
dude, someone makes a good point, and you start beating a dead horse. get over it. apple found a style that works for them and their customers enjoy. same as palm. if they made 15+ products for multiple cellular companies internationally that had different names, but looked exactly the same, your point would be more valid.

I'm inclined to agree with you here. VZW has become the Android network. it's a big selection of super-slabs; the only real differentiation is the manufacturer logo on the device, as well as some proprietary UI that not everyone is crazy about. Selection is all I'm preaching here. It was nice when VZW got the iPhone, if for no other reason to contrast the ubiquitious Android offerings with.
19. roldefol (Posts: 3178; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
The Galaxy S II (or Fascinate 2, or whatever Verizon's version is called) should be dual core. Probably coming in the fall, so Moto gets a few months' bragging rights.

RIm has been so quite lately i just hope it wont be a litle late for the to wake up ( same as webOs)

Why isn't the Trophy on the list of upcoming phones on Verizon on this site? This is big news, Verizon finally getting Windows Phone. Also, I think there's officially too many Android phones now. All that's necessary is one with keyboard and one without, 4G or not 4G. There's so many flavors developers can't possibly make apps that work with all (half of my apps crash on my droid 2 pro, contain some statement about "doesn't work with Motorola", or some other irritating caveat). The android market will need some sort of sort by phone compatibility feature. Maybe the handset manufacturers will develop[ their own market like amazon.

Good point. I just want the Omnia 7 on Verizon though.

Well this is good news considering I have an upgrade on May 3rd.

I have a question? i have blackberry stom 2 with Verizon. i looked into this phone. is it really worth a change? to spend more money on a phone? would it work with other carriers?
37. Mjolnir (unregistered)
It's not a bad phone. However it doesnt have a sim(no verizon phones do unless its 4g or global) and it runs on a cdma network, so another carrier would have to have it(att/tmo arent cdma)
36. Mjolnir (unregistered)
ahahaha, i work for VZW. Could not be more wrong. :D
