i had this problem today i had to upgrade otherwise i would lose my unlimited data b/c i had a feature phone.. and they were saying i had to upgrade today.. i ended up getting the bionic but i really want the HTC Vigor oR NExus prime : X! i better be able to take my phone back to get one of these two... or i should just complain and switch carriers................
6. Goldeneye (Posts: 375; Member since: 22 Jan 2011)
I don't understand how you felt forced to upgrade, you could've put an used and cheap smartphone from Craigslist just to wait for the phone you want and I'm between these 2 bad boys as well if the Prime comes with LTE I'm sold! Otherwise the Vigor is my next phone
8. yeabut (unregistered)
i would have to pay full retail price for those two phones lol.. dont want to do that... but i am hoping htc vigor comes out oct. 13 then i can take it back!

You don't see me trolling even though there's some gems in this article.
18. Thump3rDX17 (Posts: 2160; Member since: 10 May 2010)
that's true but you're still an annoying liar. (:

Yeah, I disagree with Taco's bashing of Andriod all the time..
You however, are being a complete asshat. he came here and offered some pretty good advice to a guy.. and you come on and start trolling him.. lol.. then yu have the nerve to say he's going to cause trouble? LOL
GROW UP and get out of your mom's basement.
I'm all for giving Taco a hard time for his Andriod views.. but lets not attack the person. Immature.
45. Thump3rDX17 (Posts: 2160; Member since: 10 May 2010)
i understand why you might think that based on what you know but i was calling him out on something he said to me in another discussion. he already had it coming. besides he went ahead and trolled here anyway. you know he's going to at some point everywhere he goes.
12. yeabut (unregistered)
just hope the vigor comes out OCT. 13 PLEase please
13. trin (Posts: 88; Member since: 11 May 2010)
Really dude? Why make stuff up? If you have unlimited data on a feature phone and switched to a smartphone you would have to pick a tiered data plan anyway. That or you were mislead.
16. yeabut (unregistered)
i am not making anything up its what they said to me.. and i heard different stoires all about that. everyone says something else so..
17. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
He's right Verizon was offering that to customers.
36. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
Yeah the deadline to upgrade to a smartphone but get unlimited data was back in July. What's with that VZW?
40. yeabut (unregistered)
actually they had that deal going on so yesterday was the last day to switch from a feature phone to a smartphone to be able to keep your unlimited data..................
23. Whateverman (Posts: 3236; Member since: 17 May 2009)
What happend with your phone? Was it unusable because of physical or water damage? You never have to upgrade if your not ready. No matter, call back and ask for a Certified Pre-Owned device. Yeah, it used but at least you don't have to use your upgrade. And there may be a few cheap smartphones you can use just until the Vigor comes out.
31. roldefol (Posts: 3260; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
It's just Verizon's featurephone-to-smartphone upgrade incentive. $100 gift card deal ends today. That is all.
Tempting, but I'd rather wait for a firm release date on the Vigor or Prime. I'll upgrade when there's something available that I actually want. Who knows, they might have a new incentive program then.
34. yeabut (unregistered)
thats correct so its either wait till a phone and get the 2gb or like what i did get a phone and keep unlimited...........
35. roldefol (Posts: 3260; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
I don't get why they wouldn't grandfather you into the unlimited plan though. Should be no difference whether you have a feature or smartphone, they still get their $30 from you.
37. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
feature phone data was different than smartphone data. feature phones had limited broswer capabilities and the VZW online not a full browser.
41. yeabut (unregistered)
agree, i was paying the 30 bucks for 3g/4g even though i didnt have it but they wouldnt let me ... lol so i had to do it ! just cross your fingers that the hTC Vigor comes out oct. 13 so i can return the bionic and get it :D i would be sooo happy..... but i wonder if they will let me get the Vigor or Prime even after the 14 days!
43. asshat (unregistered)
No, they won't..
I HIGHLY suggest you keep your eyes peeled for a cheap blackberry on Craig's list. They are everywhere!
Return your Bionic and add a blackberry to your plan.. you'll be set until the PRIME hits. You can then turn around and resell your blackberry and if you got a decent deal on it, you should get your money back on craigs list.
47. yeabut (unregistered)
well the bionic will be here on tuesday from fedex so.. so not sure how that would work if i return it and then got blackberry i dont want to pay full price for the phone (prime or vigor) so .. i am sure i will be fine with the bionic and all but really hope vigor comes out oct. 13

You should have gone with the iphone, you could have easily sell it for $500
48. Thump3rDX17 (Posts: 2160; Member since: 10 May 2010)
not if the new iPhone announcement is next week.

Damn. This is actually a really good move for Verizon, and definitely will help extend the the lifespan of Android by keeping Verizon customers loyal to the OS.
I just worry that the implications of a program like this might be that Verizon would continue to treat WP7 like a second class citizen.
3. Sniggly (Posts: 7281; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
This sounds like it might just be a repackaging of the yearly upgrades they used to give primary lines.
I'm still happy with my Atrix.
26. Whateverman (Posts: 3236; Member since: 17 May 2009)
SHOCK and AWE!!! You jumped ship? What happend man? It was the roll over minutes wasn't it? Damn it, Lowell McAdam!
30. Sniggly (Posts: 7281; Member since: 05 Dec 2009)
LOL. Nah, it was actually coverage. See, I got onto a family plan with some friends of mine who have a cabin out by a lake an hour to the west. Verizon barely has coverage there; I have to hold a Verizon phone in, like, one particular spot to get coverage within the house. T-Mobile showed coverage on maps but in reality had nothing, and Sprint didn't even show any coverage. AT&T showed coverage, and more importantly, actually has decent coverage even inside the house. Instead of only getting service in one or two places in the house, we now get service in all BUT one or two places.
Besides, Verizon stopped offering unlimited data but kept their price the same for the plan. f**k that. Also, we got really good deals on the phones themselves.
So really it was a multitude of factors. I mean, we would've gone with T-Mobile first if they had actually had the coverage. I still weep at night wondering what might've been with the Sensation I held all too briefly. ;)
Anyway, maybe in a couple years Verizon's coverage out there (and overall in St. Louis) will really improve, the LTE issues will be sorted out, and I'll have the money to afford the single most expensive carrier in America. :)

dude, that'd be great because i'm totally Droid loyal.

Sounds like Google behind the doors asking verizon to do this, seeing that Motorola aren't doing spectacular.
7. doubler86 (Posts: 320; Member since: 26 Jan 2011)
I would love this, I have had the droid one, samsung charge and plan on getting the Nexus Prime, so this is great for me. I'm very happy with verizon, they needed to do something like this especially after how pissed i was that they weren't getting the Samsung Galaxy SII
38. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
I squeezed out some info from a VZW Manager, the gs2 will be coming rebranded, but coming
49. Thump3rDX17 (Posts: 2160; Member since: 10 May 2010)
he's probably talking about the Prime.
10. TKFox007 (Posts: 303; Member since: 02 Nov 2010)
That's the one thing I don't like about Android, you get the latest and greatest your carrier offers, a few weeks later an even better one comes out.

I do agree that the current course of upgrading a device is nuts these days because of the fast past turn around in devices. Practically every year for iphone people and every 2 weeks for android people a new device pops up. I think its way over the saturation point and now to the point of what is the point of getting a device if it is not long lasting. The concept of holding on to a phone for more than 2 years is pointless today. I would prefer devices that has software that is constantly refined and CONTENT that is flowing and relevant. That way we upgrade less and they get less money. I upgraded from a storm 1 to the thunderbolt (which I didnt want but had no choice because I did not want the iphone) and my phone was obsolete right away.
29. rob (unregistered)
your phone isn't obsolete, its still just as fast and can handle all that is thrown at it as when it was new. Its just the marketing that makes you feel like it. Most new cars you buy you either lease or pay a loan over a course of a couple years. What's different?
44. asshat (unregistered)
I still have the Original Droid.. it does everything I need to do until I.. I.. I decide something new warrants my $$$.
Sure, if you get the Bionic today and then in 2 weeks the Vigor comes out you'll feel a bit like.. ugh.. the Vigor is better!
Well guess what.. Your Bionic hasn't suddenly stopped working! It's not obsolete either! Your Bionic is still a great phone and is unimaginably more poweful than what we thought could come out a few years ago.
I suggest you do as I have read and may do myself.. when I get my PRIME.. I'm going to block this website and BGR.. for about a year.. LOL. I don't wanna know what's coming out!!

I've had my EVO for 14 months and I'm still thrilled with it. I'll start looking at new phones when my contract comes due, but until then, I don't mind all the new phones coming out. Choice.
39. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
Best Buy already has a plan similar to this for all devices. you pay a fee and when you want to switch you get a percentage of the non-contract pricing. So buy a 700 dollar phone for 299 on contract and 6 months later you want to upgrade you get 350 off the cost of the next non contract priced device you get. then every 6 months after that your discount drops 10% until it reaches 20% I believe.
