Verizon killing its data counter Android widget

0. phoneArena 26 Jun 2012, 06:26 posted on

If you are like many Android phone owners on Verizon that aren't blessed with unlimited data plans, perhaps you have this handy widget supplied by Verizon itself that put your current data consumption right on your home screen, helping you to avoid ugly overages...

If you are on 3G/4G and you call #3282 (data) it should open up My Verizon Mobile and it shows your usage, you don't even need to sign in.

It sorda sucks that Verizon isn't supporting the widget anymore, all the apps I tried were completly inaccurate.

At least ICS has a built in usage-tracker, so hopefully this won't be too big of an issue going forward.

dragging the widget down to the trash doesn't even "uninstall" it...

I don't see why this is such a big deal. There are plenty of free third party apps out there that will do this for you.

Agreed. I use ZDBox as your "everything widgets" before VZW had a data counter.

The idea is that they are so greedy that they undermine the consumer by doing questionable unfair business practices to steal your money if you are not careful. This is being done to raise stock performance and has nothing to do with infrastructure cost. How many times have you gone over your plan usage paying 2-3x's in fees you could have used for home, or personal use.

They make it real convenient to lose track of usage to monetize tiered data plans. When VOIP comes in 2013-2014 family plans will really lose. Voip will be used to kill calling plans in lieu of data plans that will use VOIP as a way of contacting friends family and business..

When VOIP becomes main stream data usage picks up there by causing tiered data to be profitable. The trap is being laid now for family shared plans will break you with 3 or more people sharing x gigs when VOIP will be the only form of communications!

WAKE up to what I am saying about VOIP, and tiered data.

It's a big deal because Verizon is obviously trying to get free money from people by taking away the tool that let's you know when you go over. Bad business practices IMO.

Of course there are 3rd party apps but how many people do you think will actually buy them? I'm guessing at the most 10% of people.

I am going with they are out to get pure profit on overages and will tell the consumer that they haven't figured out how to get the widget to work with shared data.

Its because once we switch over to share everything plans the widget would show the total data used by everyone, not just that particular phone. You can still use the my verizon app on your phone to check the individual phones usage. Nothing evil going on at all, the widget just wouldnt work like its supposed to.

Widget is and it should be working! Not Verizon is trying controlled you from what you wanted to do with your device. You should have freedom to want it or not want it. Data were did get used which is you've been paid for, Greedy-ass Verizon will not give it back to you any way. I want to use the way I wanted to use.

This is something about Capitalism! Privileges? Freedom? Small privilege is being taken away by Verizon, these data that we were paid in month in advance, Verizon/anti-Android or do a favor for Apple, plugs is being pull by Verizon. it does not gives rat'sAss what is consumer want if it wasn't consumer driven these types of demand then Verizon will never exist. Widget is unique for Android, Win8 RT-live wallpaper, LTE tablets. Consumer going to use to how or to whatever they want of their data stream limited to them, Verizon should not mandated for new dump change Android user and eventually Win8 RT is next.

Wow! Most of you are ridiculous, how about you actually go into a Verizon Corp. store and actually ask about the new plans and the whole unlimited data issue. The media is almost completely wrong on all of it. NO ONE has to change anything. Read my comment above about the widget, no hidden agenda at all.

Corporate can make things sound rosy when the word comes down. They should still allow the widget to remain and help calculate how much data the entire family is using to help avoid overages. If customers don't want it, they can remove it themselves.
I think it's too much too fast: first the payment fee fiasco, then the upgrade fees, now they're planning on making more money on shared data plans....
Goodbye Verizon, hello Cricket. lol

do you think that its possible that the data widget would not be compatible with the new plans, it would have to be able to retrieve everyones usage and calculate you own to keep an accurate number displayed.

Verizon sends me a text when I'm getting close to my data limit so I don't see the big deal. The widget is nice, but I have also found it to be inaccurate. It sometimes doesn't refresh itself unless I log into my account.

I didn't even know this widget existed (Because I am still granfathered to unlimited) So I just added it to my homescreen to see how long it will last. I have no idea how much data/texts/minutes I use and that's the way I'd like to keep it...

Here in the UK, it's unlimited data, with 2000 Xminutes for £30.

The widget was nice to have so of course Verizon will take it away. I have been with Verizon for years and I have never know them to do anything for the customer's benefit, it is always about how much cash they can get out of you.

This is only a guess, I have no inside info or anything, but maybe they are removing it because it can only give data for a single line on an account, and with the (stupid, awful) new Share Everything plans, it could mislead some folks into thinking they still have data left.

Suppose you have two lines, and share 4gb total. Your widget is showing only 1gb used, but unknown to you your other line has already blown through 3gb.

Maybe they're simply going to release a new widget that can access total data for the plan.

I have a question, anyone know where I can find a video demonstrating Samsung Galaxy S III data counter widget. In other words if I only have 4GB of data I can use, set the data limit on my ICS Samsung Galaxy S III, so it can stop any data on my SGSII, Any feed back or link to this would be great.

VZW told me that is being replace with a $4.99 add on to stop your dada from going over your allowance. But I remember seeing a video, and I hope you guys to share the link if you know what I'm talking about. On youTube someone demonstrating Samsung Galaxy S III ICS data counter built in. In other words if I only have 4GB of data I can use, set the data limit on my ICS Samsung Galaxy S III setting. So it can stop any data on my SGSII, Any feed back or link to this would be great.
