Verizon Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean update finally rolling out
0. phoneArena 21 Sep 2012, 10:27 posted on
This one is real folks. After months of testing by Verizon, the Jelly Bean update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus has finally been approved and is rolling out to users. And, as always, it looks like Google had a great idea by releasing the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon...

That's great. But, it takes too damn long to get officially. I had a leaked JRO03O a little less than a month ago. Sad that it takes so long with Android. It doesn't matter anyways, I got an iPhone 5 now. Going to be drowning my Nexus as soon as I get the iPhone in hand.

Testing is still testing, even IOS goes through beta testing before its official release.
11. TheRetroReplay (Posts: 250; Member since: 20 Mar 2012)
That's true, but Verizon isn't holding up the updates on iOS devices.
12. structureman116 (Posts: 136; Member since: 14 Sep 2010)
Why did you downgrade to a criphone? An Android with Gingerbread is better than a criphone with iOS 6!
39. Non_Sequitur (Posts: 1111; Member since: 16 Mar 2012)
Freakin' Eclair was better than iOS 6 is now.
iOS 6 is a DOWNGRADE from iOS 5. I wanted to see Apple do better than that, I really did...

WOW TOOK U LOOK ENOUGH. I still don't have it on mine yet though, even tried clearing the data for the app thing.. Hopefully I get it later today

So much for being a Google device and being the first for updates.
13. TheRetroReplay (Posts: 250; Member since: 20 Mar 2012)
As much as I'd hate to say it, I agree with Mxyzptlk. It has the Nexus name and Nexus devices are known for getting updates first. That's the whole point of being a Nexus class device.
Imagine getting a Toyota Prius, that gets horrible gas mileage just because it didn't come from a Toyota dealer. Even though it came from the same factory.
Yes Verizon dropped the ball on this one, but Google should of stepped in and updated it themselves. If they can do it with a GSM, there's no reason why they can't do it with a CDMA/LTE.
I love Android but I absolutely hate Google's laissez-faire attitude they have with it. Google needs to take control of Android updates if they want to compete on the same level as Apple.
I'm sorry but that is the truth and this is coming from a die hard Android fan.

"It has the Nexus name and Nexus devices are known for getting updates first. That's the whole point of being a Nexus class device."
And I disagree with you and Mxyzptlk because in current case update goes through Verizon so, it depends on Verizon when device will get update.
17. TheRetroReplay (Posts: 250; Member since: 20 Mar 2012)
So you're in favor of Verizon's slow update process? Because it sure sounds like you are if you're defending them and their slow Android updates.
19. Berzerk000 (Posts: 4163; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
No, he said it depends on Verizon when they get the update. Google has little say in the matter. CDMA/LTE works differently than GSM, I don't know the exact details, but it's because of that difference that Verizon wouldn't let Google push out the updates themselves. Google tried to get them to let them handle it, but Verizon said no.
20. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5498; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
No, I'm not in favor of Verizon's slow update process, I'm just state the fact that updates on Verizon's network are slow because of Verizon and not because of Google.

I think they're trying to say that because it has Nexus in the name, it's already marketed as a device being pure google experience (save for two verizon apps). However, Verizon bashes that experience by severely hampering the update process.
When compared to the iPhone, when an update is released, it's released for the sprint, at&t, and verizon iPhones. Verizon has no say in those updates, and I believe it shouldn't have so much interference with the Nexus updates. If they would like to keep doing so, they should drop the nexus name and rename the device. It's not fair to the consumers that bought the device with the very fair assumption that it would be a pure google experience phone, like the iPhone is a pure apple experience phone. No matter what network the iphone is on, you get the same experience. Whether or not it's CDMA, LTE, HSPA+ or what have you. The same should be for the Galaxy Nexus.
25. ayephoner (Posts: 837; Member since: 09 Jun 2009)
i cant even get this update started. i am thoroughly disapointed with my vzw gnex!
27. wgaurav (Posts: 22; Member since: 17 Dec 2010)
if google has litlte say in updating then they should not let vz carry the flagship device....
28. TheRetroReplay (Posts: 250; Member since: 20 Mar 2012)
Thank you, that's exactly what I'm saying

"No matter what network the iphone is on, you get the same experience. Whether or not it's CDMA, LTE, HSPA+ or what have you."
Unless you happen to want to do simultaneous data and voice on Verizon or Sprint.
Or if you wanted to use Siri on the iPhone 4 last year.
31. sleepyjohnny (Posts: 151; Member since: 16 Dec 2009)
That's a network experience difference. However the software remains identical across all the networks.
Your last remark makes no sense. All iphone 4's have the same software pushed out to them at the same time. All of them have their standard features by apple that are promised by apple. Unfortunately Siri was not promised by apple for the iPhone 4.
My point was, if the phones are the same, they should have the same software in them. Besides their network capabilities, the GSM and CDMA Galaxy Nexus variants are essentially identical and should both have the same software pushed out to them in the same manner that Apple has managed to do so.

not when is Google pride and Joy .. the Nexus.. see how the fandroids are backpedaling here..
42. sgogeta4 (Posts: 393; Member since: 02 Feb 2011)
Google doesn't officially support the Verizon Nexus...
43. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
ohh look a android related article...and wait an apple troll commenting...im shocked
so you bitch that android users should stay off apple articles and look at you........
48. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5498; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
Why backpedaling? It is the fact that Verizon was keeping updates on the handbrake not Google by it self.

So much for people actuall knowing what they are talking about, this was Verizon's fault. My GSM GNex got the update around two months ago.
33. structureman116 (Posts: 136; Member since: 14 Sep 2010)
I agree. VZW blamed Google and Samsung for this update not rolling out, yet EVERY other carrier, including Sprint, which is CMDA, received their update. The fact that they think we are idiots astounds me. VZW is completely to blame for this. If Samsung and Google sent out the CDMA update to Sprint there is no reason it couldn't be sent out to VZW.
22. Berzerk000 (Posts: 4163; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
Verizon besmirches the Nexus name... It's sad. Google shouldn't let Verizon have another Nexus until they agree to let Google take control of the updates

I've been running CM10, I got tired of waiting for Jelly Bean and I love my custom theme too much to go back to stock.

orly now? too bad i don't care! i've had JB on my Verizon Nexus since the day i got it! ICS never even had a chance on this thing!
26. XPERIA-KNIGHT (unregistered)

what he said. :P
i actually just swapped phones with my mom yesterday. her Nexus for my Razr. i was getting bored with the Razr so i decided to give the Nexus a fair shake. in comparison to the Razr...i'll just say that if this wasn't a Nexus the Razr would destroy this. i like AOKP but i'll try other JB ROM's if you guys have any suggestions. oh and i'm also going to trade my Xyboard for a Nexus 7 soon too so i can have the full Nexus suite to use. i'm already missing my Motorola devices but maybe i should ween off a little, try different things and be more adventurous, especially now when i'm deliberating between WP and Android, LG and Motorola you know?

32. structureman116 (Posts: 136; Member since: 14 Sep 2010)
If I don't have this update before the end of this coming weekend, my phone will still be better than a criphone 5!!!
34. itzmando (Posts: 114; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I give up, I have been trying for seriously 2 hours straight. Am I doing something wrong, I see a few others on other tech sites who followed and said they got it. But not sure if they did or not.
Go through the same process like when I updated to 4.0.4 on my Gnex after 8 tries it worked. I did the force close than clear data and vice versa. Tried turning off the phone completely than try it again.
I guess I will have to wait for the update to appear on my phone, I usually am always connected to wifi except on campus at school since I get a strong 4G signal.
47. Malique001 (Posts: 58; Member since: 08 Jun 2012)
Usually it'll take a day or 2 to come to ur fone but it will get there by b4 the end of the week.
49. itzmando (Posts: 114; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I tried it 4 more times this morning, once every hour and sure enough it FINALLY appeared.
Glad I have 58mbps wifi, this update is done close to 1 min. and 30s for full download than upload.
Now time for it to install.
55. Malique001 (Posts: 58; Member since: 08 Jun 2012)
Lucky you, i still didn't get mine. Its in phases though so I should get it by tomorrow.
56. itzmando (Posts: 114; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Im happy to be running Jelly Bean, BUT
I have noticed that my battery is dying extremely fast.
I rarely use my phone now, other than FB but close it. On one full charge it seriously lasted 5 1/2hours on standby. By checking the uptime in about phone before it died at 3% left.
Something is very wrong here, all settings were the same before I updated. I only received like 4-5 emails in between. :(
45. cjo1992 (Posts: 24; Member since: 04 May 2012)
I haven't got it yet. I've done the Google Services Framework thing many times with no luck. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow.
46. SvbZero (Posts: 27; Member since: 07 Jun 2012)
Hey guys.. the update is really available.. Try clearing the data first in the Google Services Framework.. then force close it. When I did it this way.. it worked on the first try. Enjoy JB :)
50. bossmt_2 (Posts: 438; Member since: 13 Oct 2009)
Still haven't gotten it myselg, done the Services Framework Clear even did an unrelated system reset. I know though from past updates that the rollout can take several days, Just wish I had it now.
51. joelg1988 (Posts: 1; Member since: 03 Jun 2012)
Got mine at noon after doing the framework trick, airplane mode and wifi. I'm located in Kansas City
52. structureman116 (Posts: 136; Member since: 14 Sep 2010)
At about 3am eastern time I checked for the update and it was not there! Cleared data and force closed the GSF app, checked for updates again and BAM!!!!! Hello Jellybean!!! Smooth as silk from what I am experiencing so far! Good luck on getting your updates soon all of you fellow VZW GNex'ers!

54. exo2u (Posts: 25; Member since: 10 May 2012)
Me too, got it about 7am pacific here in WA. Definitely awesome, wish foxfi worked on jb though, anyone know of a good no root tether solution for jb?
57. itzmando (Posts: 114; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Anyone else having battery issues?
Got updated around 11:30am Pacific yesterday
My phone is just dying too fast for my liking, after rebooting and fully charged. I used it for bit to see the new features but quickly set it down to do other things.
Well fast forward close to 5 1/2 hours later its blinking red, checked I have 3% left. ??
How can I have such low battery life so quickly when I havnt used it at all its just on standby.
I could manage close a full day on charge when I had ICS with light usage on emails, web search and social media. No camera/video recording.
