Verizon wasn't going to allow its competitors to give its customers the opportunity to score more frequent upgrades of new handsets without offering a plan of its own; launching today is the Verizon Edge program that gives those using the nation's largest carrier the opportunity to pay more money in return for more upgrades to new handsets...

what do you expect? they dont even allow "regular" upgrade if you want to keep your unlimited data

Clearly VZW didn't think about this. I can buy a phone at full retail, keep my unlimited data, and sell the phone for about half its original cost after 6 months and buy a new phone, or I can sign up for Edge, get only 6gb of data for the same price as my unlimited, still have to pay 50% of full retail after 6 months in order to upgrade, and then turn the phone over to them to get a new phone. VZW clearly thinks all of us with our grandfathered unlimited data plans are idiots!

Prepaid Nexus is the way to go, check out Solavei. You can sell your old Nexus in good condition through eBay and get at least $200, making it only $150 to upgrade to the next nexus with no contract.

Verizon's edge and AT&T's next are both rip off plans. The carriers are not lowering the price of their plans which have the subsidy cost built in and then you are paying retail price for the phones on edge or next. Screw the carriers! They are trying to double dip by essentially charging you twice.

I'm glad someone has noticed this. Paying $300 plus tax for a phone and still being locked in is ridiculous.

If you sign up for Edge, you are not locked in to a long term contract. If you choose to cancel your plan, they just charge you the remaining open balance on your handset.

I asked customer service this same question yesterday and while I know they aren't all accurate, I was told that if you cancel the line, but keep the device you can still pay the remaining monthly price instead of the remaining balance all at once.

Md227, actually, the carriers make up the subsidies over the course of a 24 month agreement, not a 6 or 12 month. Essentially what is being offered is a way to get new, latest greatest, devices faster. If my math is correct, even a $27 per month payment for 24 months is $648. That is less than full retail for most flagship phones. If you had to sign a new 2 year agreement, then I agree wholeheartedly. Maybe I missed that. I understand and agree we all pay more than we want for mobile devices and services. I'm just not sure we can call programs like this "double dipping" considering the carriers usually take a big loss up front on subsidized devices. Maybe I'm wrong?

Well, also consider the fact that these carriers are not paying the $600 or $700 full retail price they charge customers. If an Edge customer pays half the price of the phone, they've most likely paid most of the MSRP the carriers actually had to pay. Then you turn the phone over to VZW, the sell it as a certified Pre owned device. So nah, i dont think they aren't hurting at all.

My recollection is that under the VZW and AT&T plans, the consumer doesn't 'own' the handsets, but can exchange the handset for another (newer) handset at a specified frequency. If my memory is correct, these plans are more like leases - you get to use the leased item for a specified period of time, but 'ownership' of the devices remains with the leasing company.
With the lease scenario in mind, it would seem to be better financially to purchase the first phone on subsidy and then in a year, purchase a replacement phone at full fare while selling the original phone to offset the purchase price of the second phone.

Look at the difference in carrier rate plan cost and it's clear that at&t and vzw are charging more for their plans then T mobile and Sprint. Carriers take a small loss that is more then made up over the two years.

Verizon can charge whatever the hell they want for their service that covers pretty much everywhere. It's not cheap.. Edge is pretty useless on Verizon. Especially if you're getting a new phone right now you won't need to change it for years. I'm pretty sure that I'm not understanding how it works though. Isn't it monthly payment on top of your plan or what. Cause that's expensive

Mr227a, Well, as much as I might not want to admit it, you get much better service with vzw. Tmo and Sprint are just awful. Between not getting a signal, or data that is so painfully slow, and AT&T being drop call central, they need to charge less. Snatching those cheap rate shoppers is the only way carriers like Tmo and Sprint stay alive. They draw people in with cheaper plans, etc, then stick them with ETFs when those people realize they've made a real mistake. Imho, US Cellular is the best carrier. At least in my area. Service is rock solid, even in very rural areas, data is fast, and customer service is the best I've ever experienced. ll do more research and I thank you for your perspective.

I've spoken to a couple Verizon reps in their online chat, and they confirmed that VZW is offering those on grandfathered unlimited data plans the option of a 6gb data plan for $30 a month if they sign up for Edge. With Edge, you still have to pay full retail price for the phone. If you upgrade you have to turn it back in. I can pay full retail, keep my unlimited data, and sell my phone when I want a new one if I'm not on an Edge plan, so why would I switch to Edge, to pay the same amount of money for limited data. Someone at VZW thinks we are idiots, or they did not think this promotion through. Also, even though every plan option is a Share Everything plan now, they do not allow this deal to be part of a Share Everything plan, and limit it to an individual line, What a crock of S**T!
