Value for money: Apple iPhone 5c pricing stacked up against the competition (not pretty)

0. phoneArena 12 Sep 2013, 03:19 posted on

The basic 16 GB iPhone 5c will sell for $99 on a two-year contract, and the whopping $549 unsubsidized. A quick look at both subsidized and unsubsidized prices of current Android and Windows Phone handsets is enough to gauge why Apple's shares slipped more than 5% yesterday. Let's see what handsets you can get at, above, or below the iPhone 5c price tag...

Every phone has disadvantages. But calling out a couple things the iPhone still does better doesn't make the article biased in favor of the 5c. It makes it unbiased.

Around here though, if you're not against the iPhone, you must be for it.

I think the reason why the 5c is priced the way it is because Apple knows the struggle... Too low and they lose the Premium brand, which is why a lot of people, especially over seas, buys it. Too high and they won't capture the lower markets. IMO they are really feeling the pressure from competition and just trying to act cool about it but they are sweating. They constantly break their/SJ fundamentals because of it. Example; making small tablets, release technology before its ready for prime time, and "lower" end models. Apple is setting up to be the next Blackberry... but for kids.

This article is another stupid one.

How many people in the US buy phones off contract? VERY FEW! Not until carriers quit subsidizing them will that change.

The 5C will sell very well here in the US because it's only going to be $99 on contract. The younger iPhone addicts will love this as they get an upgrade to their 4 and some cool colors to boot.

What I'd be much more interested in is a comparison in emerging markets, China, India.. or other countries where people do buy the phone outright.

Here in the US the 5C isn't that far off from the other phone prices. In China it sounds like the 5C will be MEGA EXPENSIVE. That is far more interesting and will have a much greater impact I believe.

Of course the one thing you can't get on 5 of the devices listed is iOS, and therein lies the reason why the iPhone is in a category of it's own price wise.

Uh, you kind of forgot the best value Android device ever.

Nexus 4 - $250 for 16GB, and it is absolutely still a great phone a year later.
