Just when we thought that Android phone manufacturers have learned their lesson, it seems the same old story is about to repeat itself...

Shoulda bought a Nexus

42. speed4evr posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:51 8

The Nexus is nice but unfortunately didnt compare to the SIII. I find it easier to just root and get a custom(debloated) rom. Currently have CM10 M2 on my Sprint SIII

58. Mxyzptlk posted on 17 Oct 2012, 11:36 7

That may not be easy for everyone.

63. speed4evr posted on 17 Oct 2012, 12:11 5

Very true, unfortunately the firmware upgrade for Android devices in the US is a slow process and gets delayed longer by Carrier testing.

45. Mxyzptlk posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:59 10

So much for uniform updates with ICS.

52. loli5 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 11:21 10

Shut up.

57. Mxyzptlk posted on 17 Oct 2012, 11:35 8

Google made oem to agree to update their devices in a timely manner with the release of ice cream sandwich.

I don't think it's fair to advertise the S3 like crazy then pull a move like this. Why wait until next year for JB when the next one is coming?

76. dex-4 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 13:50 4

This isn't true. Google wanted everyone to do it but no one did. The Android Update Alliance doesn't exist.

The only phones that Google will truly support is the nexus for upgrades, other than that it's up to the manufacturers to decide if they want to support or upgrade. Manufacturers have zero commitment to upgrade devices once they are sold.

122. VJo003 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 21:38

By the time JB is available for upgrade, key limepie will be on the horizon...
So always behind the 8 ball

59. tedkord posted on 17 Oct 2012, 11:53 2

But, even with ICS. we still have s better, more powerful OS than the competition, a year or two ahead of it. So, I can wait. (Or, if I were that concerned, I'd have JB in it already. I've seen no reason to worry about it, ICS is pure velvet.)

93. JunitoNH posted on 17 Oct 2012, 15:03

By that time, it will be Key lime time.

62. TheLibertine posted on 17 Oct 2012, 12:04 8

Thats basically why i am with Apple.

67. mandkeee posted on 17 Oct 2012, 12:26 6

yup...thats 1000000000% true....

this is why i dont like android .....

126. JunitoNH posted on 18 Oct 2012, 09:10 1

Why I bought a Nexus.............

77. -box- posted on 17 Oct 2012, 13:50 4

So, anyone for Windows Phone? ATIV S is essentially a GS3 ;)

78. chaoticrazor posted on 17 Oct 2012, 13:50 1

with apple.........news flash mate apple dont care your 'with' them. plus you saying the only reason your with apple is slow updates on android??

makes no sense you choose apple for 1 reason

but above that why comment if your ''with'' apple go be ''with'' them dont comment on an android article

according to darkkjedi apple fans never do this but your the proof

89. Non_Sequitur posted on 17 Oct 2012, 14:24

I can see where you are coming from.
I like Android better than iOS, but I'd like Google to grow a pair and kick the carriers around a little.

110. Mxyzptlk posted on 17 Oct 2012, 19:17 1

Apple has been supporting the 3GS for years. Even more so than Google has with the Nexus One. There's no excuse for them to not update their phones rather than delay them.

120. Berzerk000 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 21:28

The 3GS only got one more major update than the Nexus One did, and that was only possible with stripping away some features. At least when Android phones do get updated, they get the full update; meanwhile with iOS, you have to buy the newest model every year in order to take *full* advantage of the new software. Also, Apple only has to worry about maybe 7 or 8 devices to update at a time, and they don't have to go through carrier testing.

Really, comparing every Android manufacturers updating habits to Apple's is unfair because the systems aren't the same. The only situation where they are the same is with an unlocked Nexus, which the stats are pretty much the same across the board when compared with iDevices.

Yes, I do agree manufacturers/carriers need to straighten up when it comes to updates, but delayed updates aren't enough for me to switch to iOS when I know in about 10 minutes I can have a stock build of Jelly Bean. And honestly, the average consumer doesn't even know about updates until their phone tells them. My brother didn't even know ICS existed until I told him, much less did he know he could have updated to it 3 months beforehand.

124. AstronautJones posted on 17 Oct 2012, 23:58

So slapping a new number on the OS is an upgrade? What new features have they added? SIRI? No, not even on the iPhone 4.
I do not believe anyone still using a 3gs has a clue what number iOS they run.

I will probably replace my Galaxy SIII with a Note 2 before ATT approves JB update. So I could not care less....

66. mandkeee posted on 17 Oct 2012, 12:25 6

wow...look at how android device never update....

this is why i hate android....its always being different update date with different devices....

but apple can update every each of year with all apple devices...
iphone 3gs , 4 , 4s , ....

but how about galaxy s1? oh even galaxy s2?

79. chaoticrazor posted on 17 Oct 2012, 13:52 5

troll somewhere else ifan. its much easier to release small hardly noticeable improvements on the iphone then androids updates

but think of it like this all the features in an android update you'll be able to enjoy in say 2 years time when android has moved on again

87. Mark.J.Linskiy posted on 17 Oct 2012, 14:14 1

The Sprint 4.1.1 leak for the Samsung Galaxy S III is excellent. I'm running a custom ROM based on it, and there are no issues that I am having. It's very quick with a bunch of cool features (TouchWiz related). The official is always best, of course, but at least I'm still able to try it out sooner. It would be nice if it didn't take this long, but the more people "obsess" over an update coming, the longer it will see and then they begin getting frustrated/anger. People just get too worked up about certain things, but I'm not here to argue or anything, just stating that not everyone is "suffering" from this delay.

91. Pdubb posted on 17 Oct 2012, 14:48 1

Apple can update the iPhone each year because 1) it is the same phone from the year before with a small update, 2) it's a freaking year! between updates! You buy the iPhone 5 your are stuck with ios 6 until the next year no hope of new stuff coming to your phone. I just got the GNote with the ICS update and it says I will get the JB update as well. Two (really 3 updates) all in a years time. That is progress not changing your maps app!

106. EclipseGSX posted on 17 Oct 2012, 18:25 1

I wouldn't call bug fixes an update, just sayin. At least Android is CHANGING

88. Droid_X_Doug posted on 17 Oct 2012, 14:21 1

I suspect I will see JB on a VZW edition of the Note II before I see it on the VZW edition GS III. :-( The question is how long until VZW releases the Note II?

The ONE thing that Apple/iOS has over Android is that Apple controls the release/roll-out of their OS to the user community. iOS v. 6 was available on all carrier versions of the iToys at the SAME TIME.

92. TROLL (limited) 5 days ago posted on 17 Oct 2012, 15:00

GSM Nexus all the way. Done with carrier crap like what Sprint put the Epic 4G Touch users through just to get ICS.

14. superguy posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:33 1

Well, T-Mobile's and AT&T's GS3's ARE GSM phones. Problem is that the hardware is different for the US than the rest of the world, so what works for them doesn't work for us.

Not a big deal if you can live without LTE, but if you want it, you're screwed for now.

16. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:40 1

My GNex I'm using on T-Mobile works fine, and the HSPA+ speeds are enough to keep up with my mobile demands. I can't speak for the S3, it's not Nexus so I have no plans on purchasing it.

38. OSFantasma posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:40 1

Cool i did the same thing and got the unlimited data plan works great...

60. superguy posted on 17 Oct 2012, 11:56

I think it's less of a big deal on T-Mobile as that matches their infrastructure better.

I live in an AT&T LTE area, so it's a nonstarter for mer.

71. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 17 Oct 2012, 12:43

Good point, and it's been forcing me to consider my next phone carefully. If T-Mobile switches to only LTE, that has to be part of the purchase decision.

112. Nadr1212 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 19:44

Hah, Screwed :P

102. lsutigers posted on 17 Oct 2012, 17:53

Problem is, Sprint is generally the first to update their non-Nexus phones in the US. Same phone but Sprint variant will usually be first to get updated. Nexus updates always come first to GSM variants and Verizon is always dead last. Regardless, it's not soon enough an Google needs to put pressure on these carriers.

Now, if HTC wants to be ahead of the curve, they'll update the EVO LTE / One X, One S and One V before Samsung.

105. KingKurogiii posted on 17 Oct 2012, 18:17

okay, you're gonna need to lay out some examples for a claim like that. i can't really recall instances where Sprint beats anybody to the punch.

125. Droid_X_Doug posted on 18 Oct 2012, 02:25

One example that I personally wouldn't be proud of, but it is an example is BBOS7. Sprint beat out VZW in updates to BBOS7 for the 9930.

127. KingKurogiii posted on 18 Oct 2012, 11:25

lol okay, let's stay away from Verizon because they were a little slow in updating a Blackberry. xD

3. nbringer posted on 17 Oct 2012, 07:43 8

And that's why I want a NEXUS...

17. kevin_wsy posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:44 1

...hopefully you are on the GSM Nexus...

33. jan25 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:08 3

yep, Nexus devices will be 2 updates ahead of most flagships released this year. i am tired of carrier OEM crap, not going down this road ever again.

34. SGSatlantis posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:10

Allready running yakju 4.1.2, and Samsung: this is total bulls**t, take care of your costumers and they will take care of you(your sales)

4. Cha7520 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 07:46 13

Are you freakin serious!!!??? The best selling phone of 2012. The smartphone of 2012. The most popular smartphone. The most advertised smartphone. And its not getting jellybean u til 2013????? WOW!!!!! By the time this thing gets 4.1 the Samsung GS4 will be coming out with 4.2 key lime pie. I cant believe this is happening to me again. I went through this with my samsung galaxy nexus back in Jan. This suck big time.

19. Cesar posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:47 1

im sooooooo TOTALLY agree with you! TOTALLY!!!

i have the S III to and is so unfair!

31. Synack posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:02

Why would the GS4 ship with 4.2 if the GS3 didn't ship with 4.1?

Just expect that every SGS phone will get the latest upgrade to the latest Android every January. This is nothing new.

43. Tjey007 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 10:56 1

thank god I am not in US :P

95. Pdubb posted on 17 Oct 2012, 15:19

Almost iPhone like with its update cycle! At least it is getting the update and it could carry you over for the remainder of your contract.

5. papss posted on 17 Oct 2012, 07:46 2

And some talk like Samsung updates their phones well? How long has the s3 been out? So not only did we get the watered down version of the phone we also get the last update?

7. Retro-touch posted on 17 Oct 2012, 07:53 1

Cry me a river. At least you have 4.1.2 that works well (S4 sources being available), S2 users have to wait even longer and its guaranteed JB is the last update for it, Nexus all the way!!!

13. abdane posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:23 1

its the carriers fault, no Samsung's.

6. jamhet13 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 07:47 8

Just root it and go with a custom ROM. I'm running 4.1.2 on my GS3.

8. Ravail posted on 17 Oct 2012, 07:59 4

ive come to the terms with "i might not get an update" when i buy an android phone.. and if i do get an update.. its buggy than stock :/

49. wp8forever (unregistered) posted on 17 Oct 2012, 11:16

Lol that was so honest, I feel bad for all of you but I'm no hating on Android same thing happens to windows phone 7 and the Tango update is the carrier fault.

107. EclipseGSX posted on 17 Oct 2012, 18:30

Maybe you should get rid of your low-tier Samsung and get a real Android device. Buggy updates are a thing of the past...

9. bubbadoes posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:04 5

Who cares, I'm getting tired of these updates, and fragmentation across the spectrum anyway. I'm going to either W8 or ios...GPS doesn't even lock on my Droid 3, Verizon called Motorola and they had me on the phone master resetting and clearing the cache and everythihg else, just in the end to tell me that they can't diagnose the problem without me sending them the phone. Who in this world can send their phone to a company and be without a phone while they diagnose the problem. This kind of support has me leaving Motorola, Google and the whole fruit, cookie concept. Good Luck! All you people out there can thumb down, and bad talk all you want. I'm been with Android since the Original Droid and have owned Droid, 1,2 and 3, X1 and X2, Bionic, Thunderbolt, Charge, Fascinate and now S3--and you know what. I haven't seen a phone get update on any of those phones other than talk...if an update arrives, then it's plaqued with bugs and fixes....so my boycott is just frustration built up over 5 years of being with Android and the Google experience

12. bigdawg23 posted on 17 Oct 2012, 08:21 1

Had an issue with my HTC Vivid. My Vivid would reboot when hitting a edge area and it tried to always bounce back to HSPA/HSPA+/LTE. This would result in boot loops until I pulled my battery. AT&T and HTC both said for me to send the Phone to them. Like I said Who is giving me a loaner smartphone. No one stepped up.

I am also considering going back to Apple as no matter the rom custom or factory on any of my android phones they are bugs and glitches. When I had both the iPhone 4 and 4S no problems ever occurred to me. I only root and mod my phones to get a better experience. I jail broke my iPhone 4 and experience all kinds of app issues once I restored it things went back to normal.

Currently I do have JB on my GNote 1. However have had to revert to different JB roms or even back to ICS when the power button arises.
