I wonder where the Palm Treos would be if you aggregated them, and had the total sales history? Would be interesting to see data for WM and Palm OS separately and together. If you're going to lump all those Blackberry models as one, then the aggregate would be fair. And while I have nothing against the Berry, how many of those were "chosen" and how many dispensed by employers? How about a separate list for personally purchased, rather than employer provided?

Did IDC even look at the unlocked market when they did this?

This isn't a fair comparison when Blackberry has a thousand phones on the list. Why don't they compare individual phones, I am sure if google and apple flooded the market with crappy phones than guess who would be on top? I hate BB and its operating system. This is my opinion so don't talking shit! By the way it says Phone NOT Phones, understand what singular and plural mean?

I'm with you on this exact same thing. I don't understand the love for BB's. I've used them and I have never liked any of them.

the blackberry curves need to be broken up...the 8300 and the 8500 are completely different phones. the data is also skewed because there are 7 carriers selling the blackberry curve variations. Realistically the top 4 carriers Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are the only carriers that matter. As far as phone dispensed by employers they were "chosen"...by the CFO, IT managers and other decision makers in the company. . .The fact that a particular phone can be adopted buy consumers and professionals is a strength of that particular phone. . .However in reality blackberries are the only phones sales reps can sell because they are "comfortable selling them" (even though 9/10 that rep doesnt know diddly about the phone or any phone in their store, lol)...they are ignorant of windows mobile. If you walk into a store and ask for a windows mobile they always try to suggest a blackberry or a flagship phone (Droid, Hero, iPhone)

Perhaps Windows Mobile wasn't included b/c it is going the direction of the old Palm OS which is becoming a dinosaur. WebOS, Android, Apple have set a new tone with performance...functionality...and visual appeal. Blackberry has rooted itself in being a solid phone for business use and continues to do so...love it or hate it. Now Windows...eh. Same boring, sluggish, archaic...yet familiar to use software. Still tryin to hold on to the resistive touchscreen requiring a stylus which is more like "what's the point" nowdays. HTC HD2, HTC Imagio, Omnia I & II, TouchPro I & II eh. Nice hardware...bad software choice. Only semi-saving grace has been TouchFLO 3D but when you get beyond that you get a pretty upsetting reminder of how behind the times Windows continues to be. I've had my share of Windows devices from the MotoQ to the HTC Mogul to the HTC Imagio. Unfortunately the most impressive thing about the Imagio was the physical look and the game Teeter. I'm one of those salesman that if you come in lookin for Windows Mobile I'm pushin you any direction but that...email push is very mediocre...touchscreen responsiveness - forget about it...even the menu setup is pretty gross. It's funny to see that this method works every time...even with the techy smartasses that try to come into a store just to quiz the sales person. Hopefully WinMo 7 (which by the time they decide to release it and it will be time to release Windows 8) learns from Palm and completely overhauls their OS. If not, consider themselves non-existant in the smartphone arena.

I think if you put the Curves all together you have to put the iPhones together because the iPhones are exactly alike just as the curves are. Just a few differences in the model numbers.

2) Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB & 32GB versions from AT&T AT&T still sells the 3G and it is excluded...If people are still purchasing Blackberry Pearls I think they are still getting the iPhone 3G for $99.99. Phone Arena has a blackberry store so they skew the data...I know blackberries are a big deal presentation of data can exaggerate results. There are significant design, hardware and software difference between the 8300 and the 8500. There is little variance between the iPhone 3G and 3GS which should be put together. The person that put this survey together had the intention of overstating blackberry's dominance in the market. Including Metro PCS, Alltel and US Cellular also skew the data in this sample.

Wow i guess blackberries rule the world but it isn't really fair they should do it by the brand not the models at lot easier to say apple, motorola, blackberry, nokia, etc. then give examples of at least 2models if any.

What is all the fuss about. Claiming "unfair" is pretty lame. This is just a survey that reports the number of devices put in service during the 3 months of 2009. You can reshape the numbers any way you and and create any statistic to make you "feel good" and make things "fair". IDC is just reporting factual numbers as collected using their methodology. I don't see anything wrong with that. I take away that BB is still very popular, period. iPhone is very impressive given that they operate on a single vendor. It is hard to dispute that it is very popular and a strong selling device, period. DROID is also noteworth that in less than a full quarter it achieved such strong sell through on only one carrier. Again, it is very popular and sold well, period.
