If you were old enough to have held a game controller in 1991, you've played Battletoads. Period. The beat 'em up classic, made by Rare for the Nintendo Entertainment System, is fondly remembered by veteran players and rediscovered by rookie gamers for its brutal difficulty. Of note is one particularly unforgiving level that, to this day, makes anyone who's dared play it wail in agony. A level that separates the fearless superhumans with machine-like focus, split-second reflexes, and nerves made of steel - the only ones who were able to finish it, from the countless weaklings that gave up in frustration. We are talking about the legendary and haunting Turbo Tunnel, of course.

If you want to re-experience the sweet anguish of one of gaming's most difficult and celebrated levels ever, download Toad Rider when it launches on February 5th on iOS. Its entire premise is based on that, and nothing else. The game is made by Elektron Games, and is designed as an elaborate homage to the merciless Turbo Tunnel. Toad Rider picks up the formula of the notorious level, and adds its own twists and turns, including original power-ups, enemy and obstacle types, protagonists, landscapes, and more. The graphics are much sharper as well, pleasing both fans of the original and the unsuspecting mobile gamers used to cutesy characters and warm colors. Who could figure that 23 years later, the thumb-breaking, soul-crushing Turbo Tunnel would make for a promising endless runner?

Check out Toad Rider's trailer and cruise on the App Store come February 5th if you're in for the ride.
