Things that catch the attention of people when buying a new phone

0. phoneArena posted on 08 Aug 2012, 15:40

At one point or another, we’ve all had good and bad experiences when it comes to buying phones, but in any event, there are some key items that really stick out like a sore thumb for most consumers shopping around for their next phone...

I like how the "Honest Sales Person" pops up a picture of a BB employee. That was the joke right?

6. 305Bucko posted on 08 Aug 2012, 16:57 7

haha if they were really honest they would answer every question with:

"umm I uhh really have no idea, its hard for me to answer detailed questions because we offer too many phones here so its hard to get product knowledge and know everything about everything... besides I dont get paid commission soooo, I really dont care"

Radioshack is worse though.

Radio Shack has to be the worst. A lot of that has to do with the incredible pressure that they're under to push phones.

iPhone catches attention of people buying a phone. Nothing else matters.

You speak wisely, and the truth.

Spoken like a true i$heep!!

That is a really dumb comment given the high satisfaction ratings, low churn or other objective statistics on the iPhone.

3. tuxpower posted on 08 Aug 2012, 16:23 9

...unless they confuse the iPhone with a Samsung :-)

People, I'm JOKING! Follow the Apple vs Samsung trial and you'll understand...

Performance and reliability are also important. I get lots of people that come in looking for a smooth, fast, and reliable device. Some people want a tough phone regardless of performance (Casio Commando), others want an easy-to-use, smooth operator (iPhone), and some want very high performance and customization (high-end various Droids)

24. disneydad posted on 09 Aug 2012, 08:49 2 1

What about some love for Windows Phone smoothness and ease of use?

As I was reading this article I was thinking about how I hit everyone of those points in the first 2 minutes of demoing the htc radar

I don't think I was ever as excited and amazed about buying a cell phone more so than I was when I first got the iPhone 3G. Coming from the crap that was the Blackberry Storm. It surpassed everything and more than I ever experienced on a phone. The screen at the time was large, the display was sharp and beautiful, and of course nothing came close to how silky smooth responsive it was. I was for over a year in love with the iPhone 3G. Then I got bored with it and when the Moto Droid came out, I couldn't help but make the jump.

My mom believes everything that sales people tell her. She bought the iPhone 4 last August because the salesman told her that a new model would not come out for over a year because the then unknown 4s did not come out on time.

Never ever trust a salesman

22. dmckay12 posted on 09 Aug 2012, 06:56 2

Every time I tell her that, but she does it again the next time.

25. disneydad posted on 09 Aug 2012, 08:53 2

I understand why many people feel that way, Vader. I have always looked at honesty and integrity as two of the most important core attributes in my life and as a sales person. I always approached my sales interactions with customers with that outlook and it served me well many times. There are a lot of lazy and lying sales people that only serve the Almighty Sales Commission, which I find despicable.
Don't judge all sales people before you interact with them.......unless they're car salesman. lol

There was also a lot of false information floating around at the same time. CNet had an article that said apple wouldn't release anything new because Verizon just got the contract for the 4 3 months earlier. Sales people don't get any other information than what the rest of the world gets as far as future releases of products goes, we have to stay abreast of news articles. Rarely do I receive information from my carrier that I didn't first learn either here, CNET or another news agency.

Apple CEO and Judge Koh stupidity wanted to ban Galaxy S3 too, because the look and feel to iPhone.

#6: Because a lot of other people are buying "x" phone.

There is a group of people who actually buy products, of any type, simply because they are "in." A lot of people wanted an iPhone because enough Hollywood stars were seen with them. A lot of people also started smoking because they saw stars on the big screen smoking regularly. It's all about marketing and how powerful it is to influence what people think, do, and more importantly for them, what they purchase. All you need to do is look at fashion to see how it influences a ton of purchases. For many, phones are a fashion statement as much as they are a communication device.

17. johnriii posted on 08 Aug 2012, 23:23 3

very good post, and IMO, true. I actually find myself trying to "name" the cellphone that the detective or lawyer is using on my favorite TV shows. hilariously, I see some people using the first generation motorola razr!!

19. IamYourFather6657 posted on 09 Aug 2012, 00:30

There are a lot of people that come into the store that will not buy anything except it has a Samsung brand on it

13. Gaurav008 posted on 08 Aug 2012, 20:05

#7:Position of that brand company in the market....their market strength...

14. lyndon420 posted on 08 Aug 2012, 20:32 4 2

My first cell phone buying experience is pretty much a blur because I couldn't take my eyes off the gorgeous girls cleavage when she was selling it to me...lol.

My second buying experience was rushed because the guy who was dealing with me had such bad breath I couldn't get out of there quick enough.

18. johnriii posted on 08 Aug 2012, 23:30 1

my very first smartphone (HTC Eris) was due to a mechanic who had one at my local Tires plus. i had the LG Voyager at the time, and thought the Eris was SUCH an upgrade. in hindsight, not really. Now I'm rockin the Tbolt, and though I did heavy research on my upgrade from the Eris, the Tbolt was the lesser of three evils (LG revolution, droid charge). I can't wait to move into the dual or Quad core land of Giants. 11 months and counting.....oh, and sales reps can and do influence the "average" joe, to their benefit or detriment.

26. spiderpig2894 posted on 09 Aug 2012, 09:46 1

performance and reliability can count. windows phone blows me when it showed me its fluidity when running in an old CPU. i appreciate on what windows have done. android is the best when it comes to user friendly and openness to user's desire!

I only look at phones that already have cyanogenmod up and running.
