The iPhone 5 is official - do you like it?
0. phoneArena 12 Sep 2012, 14:05 posted on
Isn't it amazing how the rumor mill managed to get most of the iPhone 5 features right? From the A6 processor and 4-inch Retina display, to the redesigned dock connector and slimmer profile, everything was leaked weeks prior to the announcement. But at the same time, despite the fact that the iPhone 5 announcement lacked any big surprises whatsoever, Apple's latest smartphone remains a handset with amazing specifications and premium design. And in all honesty, we kind of like it already despite not having the opportunity to try it out first hand, or at least not yet. But what about you?...

Apple brought nothing innovative to the table. It's clear that they're now playing catch up. Wonder if these same analysts that said the iPhone will revolutionize the industry and shake things up again, are retracting their statements. Their bigger screen are still smaller than most of the competition. And what's with them saying "we made the device like that because this is how you suppose to hold it." Wow, way to justify your design decision.
Will it sell millions? Yes. There are a lot of people that have been waiting for it. Are they overwhelmed? Maybe not, but will still buy it because it is an iPhone and they just have to have it.
No NFC, no wireless charging, no breakthrough design. Nokia must be smiling right now because the Lumia 920 looks like a Mercedes Benz next to that Corolla

people already want to switch from s3 to note 2 for bigger screen as well. And the s3 is what,2-3 months old?
Im switching from galaxy s2 to iphone 5,and from sprint to At&t(dont let me down att here in ny). I wasnt expecting much from apple, just lte and 4" screen is good size for me.the rest works fine to me.
Its all about preference some people like ios some like android, this discussions will be endless if we never learn to accept and respect each others preferences.
Besides is the same thing that samsung and others are doing...keeping the same popular design.

Nokia's innovations were terrific with super sensitive screen and high end cameras but still got a like warm response..had apple done that..wow it's so B.R.I.L.L.I.A.N.T

"Apple's latest smartphone remains a handset with amazing specifications and premium design." Really?! Maybe for the ifans, but those people who's planning to buy this iphone 5, nothing to be amazed with its spec nor its premium design. Amazing specs are for galaxy note 2 and optimus g, premium design is for optimus g. Apple we are now 2012, 3 months more we are in 2013, your new iphone 5 should have been launched 2011. Obviously only ifans will buy this iphone 5, they are still under the spell of their great master.

I actually think this is the best iPhone yet.
Lightest and slimmest possible, with processing power and connectivity that can match any phone out there.
That being said, I wouldn't take it over any high end droid..wouldn't even think about it.

I am glad most of us finally see the double standards that arises with Apple portfolios!! I am sorry but Nokia should have been given a much better receptions for the innovations they will be bringing to the Lumia Window Phone 8 line. Apple really, really dropped the ball!! I mean seriously didn't there R&D department atleast make any attempts to do some homework on the market. Google and Microsoft products going forward will have NFC technology!! Heck word on the tech streets are that Nokia woke up the industry and many are taking notice, particularly Google on Wireless charging!! Boy was this a missed opportunity on Apple's R&D's part smh!!

As much as Apple keeps OS and hardware the same, the majority of you keep the same complaints the same every year.
Don't like the iPhone, don't get it, plain and simple. Even if they did upgrade to be the best phone on the market in terms of specs and features, you will still be complaining about it.
Just like the iPhone got old, so have all of you with your opinions. Maybe next year, you can introduce new ones.
93. chaoticrazor (Posts: 2347; Member since: 28 Aug 2012)
nope thanks to apple's uninspired repeat of a phone the opinions will be the same.
although i wouldnt be surprised if apple brought out the first iphone again called it the 'iphone retro' and mindless morons would queue to buy it

I am in between. I won't be camping out for this, but it seems like it is a very capable device indeed, while things like NFC and double the storage capacity for the money are lacking. The slightly larger screen, camera improvements, and performance increase seem worth it.
The iPhone 5 is exactly what it needs to be. A good improvement on an already very successfuly device.
Most of the comments on here are from biased users that are commenting to defend their previous purchasing decision.

Will be interesting to see if the 3 microphone system does anything in the real-world for call clarity.

Can somebody please pinch me!! We have been waiting for this? Lol ok ok good prank apple... So really whats the next iphone going to be like?
104. korean411 (Posts: 76; Member since: 04 May 2009)
overall the phone is a disappointment compared to the htc one x and galaxy s III. the reason because is that everything that the consumer wanted to do with the iphone 4s happened with the iphone 5 basically apple just offered what the iphone4s was supposed to be in the first place. the big questions is this now how big is this phone is going to sell that is where this test resides because like everyone says the year is not over and the galaxy note II is the last monster powerhouse left for this year. even though iphone 5 aren't suppose to be compared to a device like the galaxy note II because they are both in different category. an all in one device vs a smartphone wouldn't make much sense most people would say that but the point being this is what apple has for their flag ship phone for the next year and a half while samsung next flahship phone the galaxy note ii has not been released yet. only time will tell on where apple will stand for the next couple of years.

I just hate the marketing sentence in apple's site I think iphone 4s is more deferent to iphone 4 than 5 to 4s plus I hate the new design

Ahhh Iphone 5 looks out dated. Its way behind all other flagship phone. SIII, Note2, oneX all win here.
Iphone 5 Sucks.

Why is phonearena so excited for the iphone?
112. rcrider4 (Posts: 118; Member since: 14 Nov 2011)
I know I won't be paying to upgrade to it from my iPhone 4S, but I know my friends, who are both at the end of their contracts, are getting it. Definitely a great new phone, but not enough for an expensive upgrade.

Interesting thing, Noticed a TomTom van with a conspicuously similar camera on top as the google street view car. They are now blatantly copying google in an attempt to keep from falling behing

128. steven252000 (Posts: 64; Member since: 10 Feb 2010)
Do I like it? Uhh....nope. Looks more like a 4s XL. At some point Apple is gonna have to face it their design is getting old. It kind of reminds me of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Vehicles. When they changed the body style in 1998 they kept that same body style from then until the last one rolled off the assembly line in 2011. They made minor changes here and there and upped the horsepower a little but mostly it was unchanged. It was a well proven car but in the end the design became old and was discontinued in favor of the Police Interceptor aka Ford Taurus. The same seems to be happening with the Iphone. It has only changed a little here and there since it came out design wise so at some point they will have to make more drastic changes in order for it to remain a contender. The Iphone 5 looks to me to be a stretched Iphone 4s with minor "under the hood" changes such as LTE and newer processor. Now I know why they are sue happy. Samsung and others get it.....Apple does not.

WoW Apple, Is this the new innovative design you can come up with ? You are ruled out of the competition.

It's not that people don't like the iPhone, it's that people are tired of the same thing being rehashed every year while the competition continues to surpass them. Apple is touted as one of the top innovators in the world, mainly because of the first iPhone.
Then they made it bigger and called it the iPad. Where is the innovation there? Verizon's iPhone 4 didn't have LTE, and had the same 3.5" screen. The iPhone 4s didn't have LTE and the same 3.5" screen.
Then comes the Galaxy Nexus, sporting a 4.65" screen, LTE and NFC.
And they tout iOS as the world's most advanced mobile operating system. How advanced is something that hasn't changed in 5 years? And how advanced is an operating system that I have to open an app to see what the weather is? Or that I have to dive into the settings to turn on or of WiFi? Or that the only thing that I can customize is my wallpaper or what icons go on what screen?
In comparison I wake my GNex and get the weather through a widget on my home screen. I can turn WiFi on and off by a widget on my home screen. I can also customize my GNex with different launchers or even different ROMs and make it my own.
How advanced is an OS that you can't bend to your will?

The iPhone is disappointing they dropped the ball and I don't like the IPhone.
136. crbandiera (Posts: 3; Member since: 12 Sep 2012)
Apple should do what they accused Samsung of doing.... and copy... let's see how far blind loyalty takes it worked wonders in California court that was embarrassing and this phone is just sad.
139. lumialove (Posts: 75; Member since: 16 May 2012)
Nokia’s PureMotion HD+ has a 60Hz refresh rate, making it “blur free” and the fastest display on a phone. Throw in ClearBlack for super saturated colors, 4.5” inches in size and a massive 332ppi that dwarfs the iPhone 5 and we know the winner.
But that didn’t stop Apple from exclaiming, "This is the world's most advanced display and I couldn't be prouder of it."
Sorry, but bulls**t.

No matter, this iPhone 5 will sell like hotcakes. Only educated people will know there are other options out there that are either equal or better.

it is the same damn design there is no difference HATE IT
149. darkkjedii (Posts: 19478; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
I'm gonna put this in baseball terms. Apple is at home, it's the bottom of the 9th, bases r loaded, apple trails google by 3 runs...instead of hitting a walk off grand slam they hit a 2 run double. Good, but not good enough it jus brings them a little closer to the competition. As a big time iPhone user I'm more let down than disappointed. Nice phone, but nothing radical. By the way Yankees rule lol!!!

162. tiara6918 (Posts: 2014; Member since: 26 Apr 2012)
I know that apple could have come up with something even better but just look at the one, galaxy, xperia, optimus line-up they were released a few months ago before the iPhone and they had the best specs yet people are still not buying them. It's really unfortunate that people only buy products because of the brand and high pricing...
167. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
its got good specs in some areas, but no, id never buy it. Of course, we all know where I stand with their inhumane treatment of their supply line, so that's not a surprise. I was hoping for a slight redesign of some sort... something different than the same design used for the last 3 years. Which means your looking at a minimum of 4 years before you see a change in the iphone. In the world of electronics, thats not iconic, thats a dinosaur.
I dont think it does jack to increase competition in the space and its definitely not pushing a single envelope in the industry other than "mad profits". Its gonna sell well, but I doubt they are going to regain any real lost ground other than in Q4's slight bump. Just like last year, Samsung will retake them by Q1 and continue to lead unless something major changes.
From a competitive standpoint. Its a failure. From a sales standpoint it will be a success. Though I dont think its going to be anywhere near the 50% increase from i4s sales needed for those GDP projections to come true.

I say most of the "totally not impressed" commenters are pretty much jaded. It doesn't , have a 6" screen, introduce 5G cell internet, have a 16 MP camera with a zoom lens, or do your homework for you...so what? Is it bad enough to make you switch to Android? I can see why current Android users wouldn't want to switch, but I would also factor in the fact that once someone invests in apps from one market, it's hard to switch when you'd have to spend a lot of $$$ getting those apps from the other OS' market. For me, it doesn't have a major "gotta-have-it" factor, but the upgrades are enough to motivate me to buy one, and I suspect most buyers of the 5 will have similar thoughts. Sure, it doesn't blow all the competition out of the water, but that doesn't equal utter failure.

And unsurprisingly, pre-orders sold out. Will not lie and say I didn't expect that, after all there are millions of iPhone owners who are loyal to the brand no matter what. It's a nice upgrade for 3GS and 4 owners. But for those with the 4S, I don't know why even bother, all the features of iOS6 will be coming to their device, so if they waste their money and make Apple rich, it's their problem, and Apple investors will smiling from ear to ear
