The LG G3 trails rival flagships in our battery test

0. phoneArena 09 Jun 2014, 03:04 posted on

With the official introduction of the LG G3, many were anxious to hear to about how it, in turn, handles itself when it comes to endurance, and not least because of it's large and extraordinarily pixel-dense, Quad HD (1440 x 2560) pixel resolution IPS display. Well, the numbers are in, and the results are rather disappointing

The G3 dethrones the S5 in everything, except sales. But sales doesn't tell the whole story. I wish LG would make WP version of the G3 soon. :D

And software (new Touchwiz is fugly and gimmicky). Also G3 is said to feel more premium than S5.

Ever heard of Sales strategy? Samsung has a sales in tens of millions, and in those more than 60% people are not advanced users, well most even don't know what XDA is, and if you expect Samsung to change UI with every iteration, it will just alienate those users from how they are used to their device's performance and layout.Touchwiz in S5 already has a good enough overhaul to accommodate all the users to a flatter UI, no matter professional dev or first time Smartphone user, they'll feel at home with the UI and layout+functionality when they pickup a new one.

Not in screen too, it has a laughable contrast(709) vs. S5's(infinity), G3 blacks(109) vs. S5(perfect 0). G3 is flop overhyped phone.

Probably you never read the reviews from other sites, or maybe you are a 12 year old who got an LG in hand for the first time, as can be justified with all the capital letters in your comment.
And yes, GsmArena really has unbiased reviews for every device, and they never bash any device no matter how bad or expensive it is, they justify why you would want to buy a device and why not.

It's the oldest site that reviewing and they never get any phone that stupid scores..they are 100% fair.. they always leave the final decision for customers but they truly say the pros and cons... did you see G2 review...the G2 battery life was the best last year and gsmarena.com admitted that..web browsing and video play back both above 11 hours..so you and other lg fans don't act like kids with these childish comments.

Pointing out the age that you assume somebody is doesn't invalidate what they have to say. You're an adult and clearly you don't know your stuff either.

GSMArena, like many other review sites are naturally biased. Not always because they have sponsored editorials now and then, but given different circumstances they get preconceived ideas about what the new device would be like. Everyone rushes to get their preproduction units and then they conclude with a half assed review. Then different reviewers use different techniques to get their scores and everything comes out in a mixed bag.

Just bear in mind that Samsung has a consistent track record of manipulating benchmark scores. So you trying to validate yourself with a Note II as your display picture won't garner you much applause. Peace.

I stopped trusting these sites for the following reasons.
1. the method used to test is not fully described, run a custom script, b*&llsh**4t, what does the script do? post the script out here so that we can verify if the result is the same?
2. Manufacturers like Samsung release phones with same name but different chipsets in different markets and these tests do not correctly indicate the region and model name.
The battery life of the South Asian galaxy S 3/4/5 is a really lousy when compared to the Korean or US version.
3. the tests do not measure standby time.

Agreed on all points.
1. PA need to describe/explain their battery method.
2. I can confirm this as well. My GS4 had a really bad battery life (SE Asia - Exynos chipset) and my friend keeps complaining on his GS5 bad battery life (Exynos chipset) not to mention often getting hot.
3. Standyby time and usage time are equally important in measuring real life conditions (hence I tend to agree with GSMArena method).

goes to show how phonearena's script is maliciously inaccurate.

come on ... do you really activate the screen when running your test? that result is simply unbelievable. gsmarena got below 7 hours of web browsing, around half of samsung s5's performance. that's just incredible.

please do a real test of how long can it play a video, how long can it take phone calls, and how long it can browse the web.

And that average iPhone is the one who should do something about the battery.

First of all, i am no hater or a fan but to all those who say they are, please check other reviews too, and i found g3 to be having a good battery life, yes i know s5 upsm is great but we are not talking of a feature phone, do we?(as upsm makes u to only call and text) So in smartphone category, by all those reviews i read(at least 7) i concluded g3 is a very decent phone on battery life even with 5.5 inch QHD screen, why don't u see that this phone has a relatively big screen and a smaller battery, and if these stats on PA are true, then it is the king and i am going to ditch my m7 for this.

I don't know how trusted these tests are, but I felt regretful that I took these tests seriously in the past.

However, I'm pretty positive that the G3 is going to give the same battery life levels as the S5 in terms of moderate 'real life' usage. Despite the bigger res.

LG G3 has better battery life than s5 based on my personal experience we did a test actual comparsion here in Korea using the same carrier provider !

for straight browsing S5 lasted for 8;06 hours
while G3 lasted for 9:21hours.

in video we watched the same two movies(spiderman & hunger game 2)for both devices s5 & g3

results;
s5 wentdown @ 21% while G3 @ 32%

Once again, I don't understand the polemic and the fighting. We should all rejoice when a smartphone performs well instead of immediately going mad... Whether or not the LG G3 is the very best performer in terms of battery life is irrelevant. No one can deny it is among the best though. Knowing the unbelievable drain such a 2k display can have on the battery, it only proves that LG has done an outstanding job on optimizing its flagship when it comes to battery life and for this only, it should be highly commended !!!....

btw, check The Verge and many other sites too..they all mention that the G3 is having great battery life despite that astounding high-res display.

I would like to understand a little bit more this test. The truth is that oriole uses the phone in a different way and, for example, the gsmarena test gives us an idea about these different ways as 3g call, video playback and Web browser. I'm not so interested in video so I would like to know specifically how much the phones last using Internet in general and some other stuffs.

Did the author confirm that they set the same brightness across phones? Too many sites are lazy and 'set' the brightness at 50% and run their tests.

LG seems to be playing some games when it comes to brightness - at 50% it seems to be very dim with an aggressive ramping at the top to protect some screen temp and power usage issues.

Can the author share at what cd/m2 they measure and equilibrate their phones to?

You're all missing the point.

There is no way to get an accurate real life phone use test. Everybody reads the same web page at different speeds. Nobody talks at the same speed for the same amount of time every day for every call. Nobody can text/email the same length of messages for the same amount of time each day.

Hence to say that GSMarena's tests are more accurate/realistic is BS. They can't even state the exact proportion of each function.

Phonearena's isn't either. But I favour tests that are objective. Run ONLY a video loop till it dies. Note the time. Repeat for only web browsing till it dies. Repeat for talk time only. Repeat for standby time only etc. etc.

This gives a an objective test of EACH type of function. Whatever your usage pattern, you know where you stand based on how much you use each - a composite test result which only you can gauge yourself.

-32 GB is more than sufficient for new, if it bothers you that much use an OTG drive
-720p is pretty good, 1080 is unnecessary and a battery guzzler you specs pig
-We've had KitKat for half a year now
-By the time the battery runs to dung, I'll be long overdue for a new phone, and the battery is easily replaceable anyways
Please study more. Knowledge is power.

Yet another idiot who is too stupid to know what a flagship phone is and who is too cheap to belong here.

Released in 2nd half of 2013 with a 720p screen and with a dual core S4Pro. Yet it was rated as too expensive for its lousy specs by the reviewers - no sd card, no removeable battery etc.. Many users today still have no Kitkat updates - if you would only learn how to read - see the news from a few mere days ago.

That's a middling mediocre mid-range crap if you need somebody to tell it in your face. You don't even belong here GEDDIT?

Cheap skate low level users like you tell yourselves "dual-core is enough", "32GB is enough", "720P is enough" cos you know sh*t.

You're half-blind cos you can't tell the difference between 720P, 1080P, QHD.

Your're stupid cos you want to carry yet another thumbdrive to connect to your phone just so you can access your files?! Can you leave that connected while carrying your phone in your pocket? Can you move apps to the thumbdrive? Is that the best was to use Titanium Backup with a thumbdrive? How much weight and bulk does it add? How do you charge your phone when its connected u moron?

You're too dumb to even realise that we're all overdue for a new phone yesterday. The difference is you have to throw away your sh*tty phone when it dies after a year of 300-400 charge cycles. Probably when you are in the middle of something really important - like when you travel. You do get out of your cave do you? You're too dumb to google "My phone battery died now my phone is worthless and I have no phone for the next few days"? Are you another i-Crap fruit company product user in disguise? You are one of those idiots who like visiting service centres just to change a battery? How many morons are needed to change a battery? 1 moron at the service counter to issue you a service number, 5 at the customer service counters to tend to you and 10 in the backroom with screw drivers screwing you for an over-priced battery and service fee?

The rest of us just change the battery for $5 to $10 or less. It will have perfect re-sale value always because it can be switched on for testing. It will always function as a hand me down to somebody else in the family, It will always be perfectly good as a spare phone even when I buy another one. I can alway wait to upgrade to another phone that I really like while upgrading it with custom ROMs & kernels - not be forced to upgrade cos my phone can no longer switch on.

The ones who say its all the same are always the ones who don't know that there are any differences at all. Grow a brain before you spew.
