Taking a 3D image with the LG Optimus 3D

0. phoneArena 21 Feb 2011, 08:48 posted on

Ah, the LG Optimus 3D! The first phone capable of displaying 3D content glasses-free, a device we got to hold and play with at MWC. Also something that we'll be telling stories about to our grandchildren one day...

Nice feature but hopefully people wont feed into 3D too much. IMO 3D is a gimmick.

I'm genuinely confused how folks believe 3D is a gimmick. To the point where they get violently upset when it's brought up. Or in this case, openly pessimistic ("hopefully people won't feed into 3D")

We live in a 3D world. We see in 3D. We hear in 3D.

I first saw HD video in 1996. Played from modified laser discs on a modified laser disc player. HD is just now, 15 years later become "the norm".... "the standard" for every TV sold and content delivery (and if you recall it wasn't that many years ago HD-DVD and Blu-Ray brought HD movies into the home).

The modern 3D technology has been out less than a year. It's still growing and transforming. But in less than that year, we see 3D content available on (that same relatively "new") Blu-Ray disc. HD 3D content available online (via PlayStation store, Vudu, etc). And two 3D channels available on satellite. In less than a year from introduction.

3D isn't a "fad". It's taken since the 50's and the red/blue stages of 3D to progress this far, but the hump has been crossed. The only true objectors to 3D are the ones that don't want to wear glasses, and even that won't be an issue later this year.

3D is here to stay. Don't buy into it if you want. But in the end, you'll be like the person that still sitting around with their 13" black-n-white TV hooked up to a government subsidized digital converter box wondering why they can't watch the football game.
