It is actually more like a proof of concept. Yes it can run it. Not very practical, but cool nonetheless. People have made Windows XP boot on a PC sporting an underclocked 7MHz Pentium processor with 24MB of RAM. Yes, it runs, but it doesn't make that PC powerful, does it?

Maybe I should have said, powerful enough to incorporate present technology even if it's struggling. :p

Nick, I think that it's too early to say. I've seen the G1 run Gingerbread quite comfortably - when it's overclocked and everything.

I'm sure that with proper optimization and\or overclocking - it will be capable of running ICS quite smoothly actually.

my guess would be no, especially if its a phone stuck on 2.2. The phone manufactures have little interest in doing updates, and the same with the carriers. Most of the time they do push throuhg updates its to fix issues with the phone, OS updates are an afterthought typically.

You have to understand that Android is looking to the future, not the past. ICS is a power hog and it brings a lot of eye candy and features that old phones with slow processors and low ram cannot possibly run smooth on.

Well, the more processing power hungry OS is, the faster it drains battery. And in my opinion, battery performance is much more important than some funky transitions...

True but they are making batteries larger and larger and also providing better battery saving functions.
