Surprise, surprise! iPad 3 to be thinner and lighter than iPad 2, may be more expensive

0. phoneArena 07 Sep 2011, 20:35 posted on

Details on the battery for the iPad 3 point to the tablet being thinner and lighter than the iPad 2, which isn't much of a surprise given Apple's design history, but it may also mean that the iPad 3 will have to be priced higher than the iPad 2 as well...

it will be so thin, they should call it the iBreak.. breathe on it wrong and it will crack the screen since it has almost no structural support.. lol

I have an LG Gslate. Sizewise i think its perfect, but it could definately stand to lose a few oz.. lol Of course it is one of the thickest tablets though with those 3d cameras on it.

remizfa, have you NOT followed the iPod Touch from 1G to 2G to 3G to 4G.

Do you even know the differences between 3G vs 4G iPod Touch?

@ remixfa, did you not notice how Apple continued to shrink the iPod Touch.

You are who stated "breathe on it wrong and it will crack the screen since it has almost no structural support..."

What Apple has shown with the iPod touch by making it lighter, faster, etc, it's doing the same with the iPad.

there is a world of difference between a thin 3.5 inch screen and a thin 10.1 inch screen. Especially since the ipad2 is THINNER :)

Where in the world do u get your logic? Next you will tell me a model 747 and a real 747 can stand up to the exact same structural stresses..

OMG. your hillarious.

Maybe more expensive? Are you kidding? Of course it will be. The 64gb model will hit the $1000 mark this time.

I was able to play around with iPad 2 for a few weeks and I can say for sure: This is just a toy, nothing more. What is the purpose of this toy? Not fully functional browser, not much pre-installed apps - almost nothing... You must buy even mid level games.
I'm not critisizing Apple fans. Just my oppinion.
Have fun.

I agree it's a toy.

And for many grown-ups, it's a $500 or higher toy that they got to have. Some people drive Ferrari's while some drive Fords and to each, it is considered a toy as well.

I didn't agree that iPad is like a Ferrari. More like big stupid american cars. Spend a lot of gas for nothing, just to be big. May be the americans have a complex to compensate for something...
Like Apple compensate their limited OS with things like "retina" display, no matter that human eye can't see the difference between 360x640 and 640x960 on 3.5" display without magnifying glass.

If they make it anymore thinner or lighter, it'll just blow away in the wind. *snickers*

It's the same arguments being recycled. The iPad 2 costs more to produce than the iPad 1 when considering component costs. For example, the iPad 2 had a faster processor, it had two additional cameras, etc but it came in at the same price of $500 and up, respectively.

The point is costs are typically higher with new processors, a better display, better batteries, etc, etc, etc, Apple offset these higher costs with economies of scale and economies of scope. Lastly, Apple is a better producer of these products after building millions of these units as well as asking for concessions.

In summary, it's the same argument recycled. Apple has made the $500 price a line in the sand and is using it to destroy the competition. One more thing, when the iPad 2 came out, you could have gotten a new iPad 1 at $100 discount. If this trend continues, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple discounts the iPad 2 at $50 rather than $100 when the iPad 3 shows up as a way to recoup the higher component costs.
