Still a gimmick? Qualcomm announces its first (low-end) 64-bit mobile processor

Qualcomm quietly moved the man who made the unwise comment calling Apple's new 64-bit A7 a "gimmick", but the company isn't going to escape the comment so easily, especially now that it is announcing its own 64-bit mobile processor. Obviously, it has been said here that while the chip is powerful, in its current use Apple's A7 is more of a marketing gimmick. Right now, the benefits are limited in the iOS devices that exist now, but we're not a processor manufacturer, so we're allowed to say things like that...

So what? Qualcomm knows it's a gimmick. They also know that it's a smart gimmick. It's just another term for people to use in the spec war that's slowly suffering from diminishing returns. They called Apple on their crap, and decided to copy Apple on their crap cause it's smart.

I agree. It's amazing how anything Apple does, other companies must follow, even if it is worthless, because Apple is seen as the leader.

can't blame them. all the big companies will ask for 64-bit processors so that they can market the hell out of their devices and belittle the iPhone. even if deep down Qualcomm thinks the 64-bit is a gimmick, they won't risk losing market share over it.

Who see's Apple as the leader anymore❔ What have they innovated lately❔.. Do they have Wireless charging, up to four HAAC mics per device, super sensitive touch, 9ms screen refresh times, assertive display technology, advanced camera technology, OIS, and so on❔❔.
Lumia devices pack more innovation into a single device than Apple has put in every iPhone for the past six years... Lumia should be the one to follow, and the fact is that the industry has been responding to ever thing that Lumia has innovated in the last few years.. And we're talking about useful features that are used in everyday life, not things that might be useful in the future..

Not that they are bad things, but are we really seeing the full benefits of them on our smartphones❔... Which would you rather have. 80 billion transistors in your next chip, or worlds better battery technology❔... At the point my smartphone performs with its current "outdated" snapdragon DC1.5gz I would just rather my next Lumia have better screen, battery, camera, sound, radio, and software technology as a tradeoff..

more than 1 billion transistors in A7 CPU. That almost reaches the transistor count of 6 cores Intel Core i7 Gulftown (1.17 billion).
And for GPU side, it really packs a punch.
Apple is still the leader in ARM based CPU.
my PC's monitor has 2 ms refresh time. So what?

You can say blah all you want, but what's more useful in everyday life on a smartphone,, all the things I mentioned, or your one billion transistors❔.. Can you show anyone the advantage❔ However many transistors my Lumia 920's dual core processor has it alows it to do all of the useful things that I mention plenty fast enough, and without issue... I'm not saying that the iPhone is bad by any means because it is superbly developed by every means.. Its just that the original point was about how everyone is following Apple for innovation when they are clearly not... My 920 came out in November of 2012 and it blows away the newest iPhone in innovation, and that's fact❕...
And, your argument about your PC's monitor is the most lame ever.. That's like you saying that your iPhone has 4gb of ram and me replying "who cares my PC has 8gb of ram".. Really❔ We're talking about smartphones hear, and to put that 9ms refresh time in perspective for you,, pretty much all modern smartphone screens are around 23ms, that's a huge difference, THAT YOU CAN SEE!

That's nice.. 1 new innovative feature in how many years❔... I'll take all that I mentioned above, and more, over a fingerprint scanner.. Not to say that Apples FP scanner isn't cool, because it's awesome, but that's just not enough to make me wait in line overnight...

You are absolutely right there. They have seemed to slow things down a bit. There seems to be a slowdown in the smartphone world from every maker.
Something big will come within the next couple of years. It certainly won't come from watches, glasses and flexible screens though.

Before you go on about 64 bit being a gimmick, the article is very imprecise - ARMv8 brings about NOT JUST 64 BIT, but an UPDATED 32 bit instruction set.
The whole 64 bit part about processing and memory is nice - BUT is isn't the ONLY IMPROVEMENT.

you guys just don't get it do you .. leave aside 64 bit ... this is Arm v8 based means new instruction set .. means faster performance ... as per anandtech performance will be 2.7 dmips .. meaning 10-20 % faster than cortex a9 cpu .. present cortex a7 is just at 1.9 dmips.. it will be rocking in low end this is the best news..
then you have adreno 306 which should obviously faster than adreno 305

The need for 64-bit arises once the device uses over 4GB of RAM. Until that is necessary a 64-bit chip will remain a gimmick.

You realise that there are many more upgrades in bandwidth etc for the CPU when you switch to 64bit? 4gb ram is only one of the advantages.

bandwidth depends on bus width, clock rate & type of memory.
32 & 64 bit CPU is not bus width. But it's the length of instruction code.

Yeah, there's no benefit to using the ARMv8 instruction set, or the better handling of decoding audio/video or the improved security inherent in 64-bit. Just keep spewing the same nonsense Michael does. I'm sure he knows better than people who pay attention to actual SoC architecture, like the folks at Anandtech.

If You want to have 4GB of RAM You need 64 bit architecture. (2^32 of virtual memory contains not only RAM memory, so practical limit for 32 bit archtecture is 3 GB of ram)...
At least in X86 vs X64 architecture. I don't know much about ARM (mobile processors) architecture. If there is someone who specializes in ARM architecture, I'd like to hear his opinion.

Waiting for the release of the S810? come on the 805 has barley been released and no Manufacture has yet to use the 805. but dont get me wrong i would love to see the 810 take on the likes of the Nvidia Tegra 5.

The 805 is barely different enough to even be called a re-hash of the 800.
Quad Core is and has been a gimmick to begin with. There's a reason Apple and Intel are both using efficient, moderately clocked Dual core chips in their new SoC's.

this quad core would actually be worthy of the name "quad core" and not those weak cortex a7 ..
