Steve Jobs vowed revenge on Eric Schmidt over Android

A biography about Steve Jobs, which is scheduled to be released on Monday, apparently tells the story of the falling out between Eric Schmidt and Steve Jobs, and how Jobs vowed revenge...

Michael, I question some of what you have here.
How can you claim that Jobs thought Apple never stole any idea? Wasn't Jobs known for regurgitating the 'great artists steal' quote?
And you say Jobs had a hand in some terrible things, the least of which was this vendetta. Maybe I'm reading that wrong, or the wording is slightly off, but would be the worst of things he had his hand in? I'm not a blind Jobs follower, but it seems you imply that he had a tremendous dark side with your last sentence. Or is that what you meant?

Note that he said "as far as Jobs was concerned", and look up "irony" in the dictionary.
193. ayephoner (Posts: 850; Member since: 09 Jun 2009)
i didnt pick up on the ironic tone at first (was first thing in the morning). i also read some of michael's comments down the list here and saw his explanation of this stuff.
i still think these two view points are a bit skewed though.

got to remember, this guy is trying to sell a book and make a buck off a dead guy. Not everything in the book is going to be 100% accurate. This may or may not be.. or it could be a story fluffed up for better dramatic effect.
noone knows but steve and eric

your post was SO helpful and well thought out that i decided to thumb you...down.
Of course none of this biography is going to be 100% accurate. like people said, he needs to make money and what dead guy is going to argue with him?

What if Palm asked Steve, "I just want you to stop using our ideas in your phone and claiming them as your own!"

Kinda sad since Android is still going stronger than ever...

I don't see how it is because of apple. I have been with android since the beginning and there was never anything that looked like iOS did.
For the record, I also know that before the iPhone android looked like blackberry but who knows, the project was bought up by google so who knows when they changed it.

It's true, it's all thanks to Apple.
They can't innovate anymore, lost Samsung as a supplier, and have resorted to suing their competition over baseless patents.
Thank you Apple!
259. Astreo (Posts: 102; Member since: 05 May 2011)
Lost samsung as a supplier? im sorry but do you NOT read the news on here stating that Apple is STILL their largest customer and were in fact negotiating contracts and extensions?
266. Ray386 (Posts: 8; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
how is it thanks to apple there is nothing innovative about the iphone at all the software has looked the same for 5 years now with incremental upgrades
59. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
nah hes just a d**k… u dont say steve jobs is an idiot once hes dead… u may hate apple but nobody can deny how intelligent steve jobs was…
62. jacko (unregistered)
u dont have to be intelligent to steal or copy ideas
65. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
like what.. please explain! because what did the mac directly copy? if i remeber righ the apple 2 was the first graphical interface computer… oh right what did the ipod directly copy… oh right what did the orig. iphone directly copy… oh right what did the ipad directly copy…
and just to show u, if he copied all these things, where was the succesful product beforehand that was so great he just had to copy it?
73. whatevs (Posts: 18; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I rely on apple computers everyday for my job, and have for the past 13 years. Innovation and perpetual genius continuum! Stability! Performance! And it just so happens that the iphone is a sweet truffle on the side. Yessir.

ever hear of Xerox?
you realize that Apple pays Nokia a fat amount of its profits per device and a huge lump settlement for all the nokia patent infringements it had.
Apple is a notorious thief. But then, so is everyone else.
260. chaitanya.alur (Posts: 6; Member since: 21 Oct 2011)
hmm...if all of those are copied..then what happened to the originals..??? and why only apple products are widely accepted and not others..n why they always create new phase and standard in the industry??
102. Satya (Posts: 5; Member since: 19 Aug 2011)
yes thats what exactly Google did, copied ideas..
267. Ray386 (Posts: 8; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
you say google copied the ideas from apple how is that. Andriod looks nothing like an I phone, but what about I phone imessage came from bbm there notification software is a direct copy from android and icloud that is also a correct copy from android. Android has been using cloud services for years now and once again people like you dont realize that most of the technology in a iphone is outdated now a days or copied and when you see it on an android device you say that its copied. When the truth is it all ready existed on these other devices and apple copied them
103. Satya (Posts: 5; Member since: 19 Aug 2011)
thats exactly what google did, no intelligence so copied ideas..
218. catfacepanda (Posts: 16; Member since: 20 Oct 2011)
You can't say that one copied the other and not agree that if one did, then they both took from each other. It's a complete idiot statement to even attempt to "protect" an operating system. Ideas come from somewhere, sometimes they are original, and sometimes not. Get over yourselves.
82. Ravail (Posts: 182; Member since: 14 Oct 2011)
my apologies if my statement came across the wrong way. Didn't mean to piss anyone off. im just saying Apple is pissed cause Android is a threat.
86. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@revail. Steve was pissed because Google stole a lot of Apple's ideas. Why else would Apple felt betrayed by Eric? Your mentality is twisted. Producing and selling your own cellphone is not stealing. Copying how others made their cellphones, is stealing.
104. jkapster (Posts: 50; Member since: 15 Dec 2010)
The funny thing is that steve jobs said himself "I've been shameless about stealing great ideas...." so why should he be mad if eric did to him what he did to other?
4. protozeloz (Posts: 5395; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
If I'm not mistaken the nexus one didn't had multi touch at first, the droid had dual touch and with a latter update the nexus got it too
8. protozeloz (Posts: 5395; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
Review confirms this
160. Mooooo (Posts: 212; Member since: 27 Aug 2011)
He stole himself. Got mad that he was robbed. So I guess he is the only one allowed to rob and this is ok? Who decided he was the only one allowed to do things good or bad? To pass judgement on others.
56. jacko (unregistered)
omg really what is he to u a god pfft just a guy that copied others and got famous for it wow woop di do
get over it steve oh wait i guess it angered him that much it killed him
64. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
i guess ur just an ass… if u had any intelligence at all frothing in ur "brain" u wud know protolez loves android and that there wud be no android without steve jobs… hahahaha and when you turn a failing company into the second most valuable one in the world and revolutionize many different markets, please come post another commment… but saying steve jobs is an idiot is just disrespectful…
and btw although i don think ios will single-handedly take down android, cough wp cough, i see hwo steve jobs is mad when his friend leaves his company that he built and creates a very similar operating system… whether this happened or not idk but i see how steve could be upset
68. L3610n (Posts: 47; Member since: 01 Jul 2011)
Why would windows or Microsoft take down Android if Microsoft makes money for every Android sold? SMH...
75. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
thats just an addition… microsoft would make wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more money from having wp7 as a huge os. and it is not very easy to take market share from ios as it has a very strong user base… although the android one is huge, its not very dedicated… wp and apple obviously do not want to fight each other as they do not sure each other as much as android… maybe im wrong but thats what it looks like… wp sees an oppurtunity in being apples friend and apple sees an oppurtunity to take down android…
253. dmakun (Posts: 306; Member since: 06 Jun 2011)
For the record, I'm thumbing you up for the first time lucas777! I agree 100% I can understand why Jobs would be nuts about his friend leaving to set up android which now happens to be the greatest threat to IOS but still I struggle to see the similarities that is the issue here. To me (as a ordinary user) the experience of using IOS and android is remarkably different. Androids 'customizationality' (yes, I know that word is made up) is a stark contrast to IOS and its closed but efficient user experience.
It makes me wonder if Steve had plans (he may have shared with Eric) to eventually open-up IOS in future which would then seem like an upgrade to what it is presently.
268. Ray386 (Posts: 8; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
Lucas777 You talk so highly about apple and you said there wouldnt be no Android with out Apple but think about if you know your history. There for sure wouldnt be no apple with out microsoft
87. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@web. Apple innovated on existing platforms. They did not simply take someone's idea and put their Apple logo on it.

@web i cant wait until you die

Does Jobs realise that ios5 copied the notification from Android? To me features like multitouch is an essential element to devices with touchscreens and should be made mainstream (well, it is) and Jobs shouldn't feel that it should only exclusive to Apple products.
46. NVPMOTHAF (Posts: 78; Member since: 28 Sep 2011)
Well if Apple made it what it is then............Plenty of room to complain.
60. jacko (unregistered)
what about samsungs 3G antenna they been using
and ios slote from android
Well if Samsung made it what it is then
79. sethyvball (Posts: 46; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
What are you on about? So the person/company who made the first touchscreen should get all the exclusivity rights to touchscreens? Should Motorola, who made the first mobile phone, be the only company who is allowed to make mobile phones since they invented it?
Cause that will stall the technological revolution we are seeing today and that would seriously limit our options and choices. Imagine having to buy an Apple product just to get multi touch or buying a motorola phone to get...a phone.
I hate it when people say "oh android ICS stole this from IOS, this from Symbian and they stole this from WP" to me its a good thing. Cause now I have ALL these features/highlights of other operating systems in one, Android.
197. CptBlu (Posts: 1; Member since: 21 Oct 2011)
Forgive me for being a windows boy but intelectual property rights are very important and all these companies have been stealing from each other You would hate to be the developer who put his heart and soul into coming up with some great new technology that he thinks you will love and then you do but some other company comes in a does the exact samething but sells it 2 cents less then you do now instead of you getting paid back for all that blood sweat and tears you just left with more tears because you could never reduce your price enough to compete where the other guys can take a loss on it and still come out ahead in the long run once they finish killing your dream.
THEY ALL DO IT doesnt make it right in fact its very wrong which is why IP and patent should be fought for There is also a diffrence between a pretty straight forward rip off and some one who innovated on top of what I did The new people app on android did not add or innovate more functionality on top of the people hub it just copied it The android UI i guess kind of innovated on ios design by adding widgets and multiple home screens but personaly thats about as much change as going from green to blue the new notifications in ios5 not really more innovative then android pretty much a direct copy As stated earlier apple didnt innovate the touch screen but they did figure out a way to do it better and thus greatly changed the way we interact with these devices (a grid of icons became possible and made more sense ) All im saying is yes if you invent something you deserve the right to profit from it before anyone else this is your reward for your hard work and dedication this is why we have patents and IP rights please dont defend the idea of stealing other peoples hard work you would not be so happy when it happens to you
Just as the guys who created the wireless synch app for ios to have it pulled and then built into the os or ask the guys over at shazzam how they feel about bing music on windows phone these thing have effect on real people they are the ones that suffer when the big guys bend the rules
Apple tries to say it created the App Store but my old HTC titan and a market place that i could by apps and games from (not very good but it was there)
89. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@seth. How sure are you that Apple stole android's notification screen? Just because android implemented it first, it does not mean that Apple never worked on it. Why do you think no one sued Apple over it? Because they know that Apple has a right to it.
How can you say that multitouch is essential when no cellphone implemented it the way Apple did. Apple pioneered multitouch on cell phones. Everyone was using styluses on a resistive touchscreen before the iphone remember? Well yes, it is no longer exclusive to the iphone, but its implementation was definitely copied from the iphone.
95. Whateverman (Posts: 3250; Member since: 17 May 2009)
So let me get this straight, Apple gets a pass for using a touchscreen when there were other companies that did it first, but these same companies shouldn't get a pass because Apple used multi-touch on a phone first??? Yeah, there is no double standard there at all! It's like that old saying...what mine is mine and what's YOURS is mine, right?
121. sethyvball (Posts: 46; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
What your saying is very contradicting. You say that Apple implemented the multitouch screen first (which is true) and that other companies shouldn't be allowed to have this on their devices because they didnt invent it. But yet you admit Android implemented the notfication system first and yet its ok for Apple to use it cause of your assumption that they were working on it?
Get out of the cave please, how many years have Android had the notification system? How many years (or more like weeks) have Apple had it? If Apple were working on it then they would have released it years ago. In fact, how would you know if some other company were working on multitouch before Apple released the it with the iphone?
Im just so confused at some of these comments people are making, I really am, cause they don't make sense. And please don't call me a "Fandroid" cause Im not. Im open to trying anything and everything, and I have. I was planning to buy an "Iphone5" cause I was excited of its "different design, thinness, bigger screen" and so on, but since my expectations of the new Iphone did not materialize, I'm open to looking at other phones that meet it.
Some people are stuck in this fanboyism state that they are blinded and fail to see what other companies have to offer (this mostly applies to Apple fans who wouldnt buy anything without an apple logo on it).
220. 530gemini (Posts: 2198; Member since: 09 Sep 2010)
@seth. You don't get it because you lack the IQ. Implementing something first, does not mean that you're the only one who has the right to that feature UNLESS you own exclusive rights to that feature.
Apple made a big fuss about multitouch gestures because they do own some EXCLUSIVE rights to it. I couldn't say the same about android's pull down notification because they never even bothered to say anything. Why? Because they know that Apple has the right to use that feature. Only android fanboys are saying that Apple copied it as if android fanboys knew what Apple developed years ago that they could say that.
Yes, it was only in iOS5 that a pull down notification has been NATIVELY integrated into the iphone. BUT, pull down gestures and implementation already existed on the iphone way back in 2007 is several of there apps. What does that tell you? Apple has every right to use that gesture in ANY of their apps, native or 3rd party, LEGALLY. Android could not say the same thing for multitouch because no android device ever used that gesture before the iphone :)
229. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
or its because of the OPEN SOURCE nature of android. Woopsie.. forgot that one.
254. sethyvball (Posts: 46; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
I lack IQ? Ahahaha!! Oh idiocy keeps coming.
Ok Ok, lets pretend your right...
Now only Apple gets to use multitouch on their devices. If you want that get that feature you have to buy an Apple product. God knows how much MORE expensive Apple products are now that they are charging us for this exclusive feature. And that only 1 phone will have this feature a year.
Are you happy now? Are you happy that our technological advancement is seriously hindered now? Are you happy not having this feature on other devices and you HAVE to buy from Apple to get this feature? Will the Apple fanbois benefit from this?
Pffft you know what? Unless your Tim Cook you won't benefit from anything, and this where you go wrong. Unlike you with your fanboism and hypocrisy, I dont stick up for any company, Im sticking up for the general population that WILL benefit, cause now we have more choice, more freedom to choose from whatever we like.
DO YOU SEE NOW? DO YOU UNDERSTAND? or are you just gonna say "apple rules" then I wont bother with your stupidness.
255. deepuppy (Posts: 1; Member since: 22 Oct 2011)
its really well said from you..after all everybody cant invent each and every aspect of technology and at some point have to use other s innovation including egoistic apple and steve jobs but they dont agree that they have done it.It is clearly eminent in the latest notifications system from apple and the whole world knows it .There is nothing wrong in it and i have only stated an example from apple coz he claims every one does it and he does nt.. but his egoistic nature puts everything in a wrong way come on grow up..have a broad mind and dont go on throwing stones at each other better put up energies in to innovating and u will come up with great ideas.steve jobs was not the last genius on earth..
269. Ray386 (Posts: 8; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
Very Very Very Well said I really like you sethyvball you know your stuff
10. Whateverman (Posts: 3250; Member since: 17 May 2009)
I don't Android stole anything from Apple, but I kinda wish this story didn't exist. I don't want my last memory of Steve Jobs to be him devoting his last breathe to Android's destruction. I know it's part of his story and therefor part of history, but I wish that little tid bit could have been saved for another book at a later date. Either way, I'm looking forward to reading it.
