Sprint's HTC Hero may be blessed with Android 2.1 on April 9
The last time we caught wind of an the possible update to Android 2.1 for the HTC Hero (on Sprint), the carrier stated this would be happening at the beginning of Q2, 2010, but didn´t mentioned an exact date. Now a leaked document has surfaced on the Internet and it reveals the smartphone will get its software update on April 9. Hold your horses, however, because no one has ever stated the update would update the OS version of the HTC Hero to edition 2.1. Rather, the paper clarifies this would be a patch to fix the issue with the images in Sprint Picture Mail. Despite that, the source assumes owners of the HTC Hero will not be disappointed and will be able to finally see Android 2.1 on their devices.

We know this does not sound very reassuring, but fingers crossed the April update will finally bring all the extra features that Android 2.1 offers. If you have more information on the matter, please share it with us via this link .

Its true. The Hero has one issue; Picturemail consistantly not downloading and opening. A Factory Reset only temporarily fixes it. With that, I just got word yesterday Andoid 2.1 is the fix for it and it is to be released in April. Hence, that was per a tech conference call with Sprint. We thought a simple patch update would take care of it, but its being inculuded with 2.1. The Renegade will only get a patch update to correct it. So again, it will be inculded with 2.1 which will be rolling out very soon. Were constantly getting over run with customers complaining to us Techs about the picmail issue, so yeah were looking forward to it.

there is another error as well. I dont receive update notifications when there is an update available fromt he market. With verizon's droid eris, it works, but not with the Hero.

All you have to do is open the market app and look at your downloads, and it will list which apps have an available update. Its not that difficult.
