all the carriers are doing it because Asurion is losing money. Insurance is such a rip off anyway. You have to pay $6 to $8 a month for it, then pay a deductible of either $40 or $80 (depending on phone). If you do the math, you might as well buy another phone or sign a new contract since I know Verizon pretty much allows customers to get a new phone at the two-year price every 12 months or a new phone at the one-year price anytime. Even then, Verizon will only charge you $50 to send a replacement phone to you if your phone is broken and/or out of warranty. Who needs the ripoff that insurance gives?

what's the catch? i don't understand...why are they doing this? do they want to get more subscribers to pool the risk?? The carriers have been so evil about the insurance over the years...anyone have any insight into this?

vzw has done this for years

To clarify, VZW has not done this for years. They are doing this right now, just like Sprint is. They both contract throught the same phone insurance company, Assurion, just like the rest of the industry. Verizon also did this last year and has cheaper insurance rates through Assurion than Sprint does.
