Sprint launches new LBS service - Family Locator

Sprint Nextel announced the availability of their new location-based service - Family Locator. The service, which is targeted mainly at parents, allows them to locate their children through GPS-enabled mobile phones by either using their wireless handset or a PC. After requesting the child's location, parents get it displayed on an interactive map, along with the street address and surrounding landmarks. Moreover, parents can set alerts to be automatically notified when the child arrives at a pre-defined destination. Children are also notified every time they are searched for by a text message they receive on their phone. The Family Locator service is available for $9.99 a month. This fee allows subscribers to register up to four handsets and includes unlimited location requests as well as 100 text messages to each of the registered handsets. Currently the Family Locator application can be downloaded to 17 phone models and can be used to track 30 GPS-enabled Sprint and Nextel phones.
