since i've seen the promos for that device, allow me to offer answers.
the smartwatch 2 uses android as its operating system so you can add apps there for it to do various functions.
it connects to any xperia device as well as android devices from other manufacturers.
it can be used to remote control an xperia device to take a photo.
it can be used to view text messages.
i don't know why would you wanna view your gallery from such a puny display when you can get a better view from the smartphone or tablet.
it has a fitness app pre-installed.
it is dust and water resistant.
has a LED light that can be used as a small flashlight.
can set alarms on the smartphone.
do various other things because you can have android apps installed on it.

Even for smartwatch 1 they already allow remote picture taking. The remote image is live feed to the watch so you can remotely monitor what is going on. Tap the watch face would snap the picture.
Standard notification is via vibration. There also a alert if you accidental left your phone behind.
In fact these device grow on you and Sony has made incremental update over the months and their software is considered stable.

+Can I get a call through it so I don't have to take out the phone from my pocket or... maybe leave the pool to go for it?

according to engadget, yes it can answer calls.

I'm so glad that it was the sony who came out with the first smartwatch. If it had been apple, everyone(or at least ifans) would be shouting to the top of their lungs, that others are copying apple and sue them to the end of the earth!! Since it was the sony or not apple, people won't be saying this when other companies make smartwatches. Thank you, Sony. Sony rules for a change.lol

Apple fans are irrational you could never reason with them.

I also pledge a new Kickstarter smart watch that seem to support Windows 8 phone well.
