Sony says that major smartphone manufacturers will soon be using its dual -lens technology
Did Sony just confirm the rumor about Apple using dual cameras on the Apple iPhone 7 Plus? Apple has been using Sony technology for its iSight camera. Today, the Japanese electronics giant said that major smartphone manufacturers will be employing its dual-lens technology within the next year. Sony CFO Kenichiro Yoshida made the statement, adding that demand for the dual-lens tech might be negatively impacted in 2016 by a slowdown in the high-end handset market.

With that in mind, Yoshida said that it might not be until 2017 before the dual-lens rear camera systems start to appear on high-end handsets. Still, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a tremendous track record with his calls on Apple, recently said that a second camera lens on the back of the iPhone 7 Plus would be used for optical zoom.

Apple does have a history of adding a premium feature to the rear camera on its iPhone Plus handsets. For example, the rear snapper on the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and Apple iPhone 6s Plus both feature Optical Imaging Stabilization. The latter prevents the images on a photo or video from being affected by shaky hands. OIS is not employed on the Apple iPhone 6 or Apple iPhone 6s.
