According to Digitimes' favorite "industry sources," Sony Mobile is aiming to have a big year in 2013. The manufacturer is said to be planning to sell about 50 million smartphones, which would be a pretty decent increase compared to the 35 million units it's expected to ship in 2012...

Sony has great designs, but not great timing. And Sony behaves like an aristocrat.
This is street fight Sony and you gotta be very dirty to win it against such hungry gangs like SS.

"Although Sony's phones seem to be OK in terms of hardware, we think the manufacturer should work on its software experience if it really wants to succeed. The custom UI that Sony is using for its Android phones looks good, but it often presents users to sub-par performance compared to some others out there like Samsung's TouchWiz."
I wish I could "thumb" this article down! Maybe if people stop being so biased towards every company other than Samsung and apple they will have a chance Ray....
5. eisenbricher posted on 07 Nov 2012, 05:20 6 7
I won't call this biased. Many ppl share the same opinion. I've used Sony android phones and they really need to change their UI now. It wasn't laggy actually, but in need of some bright elements. It's simply a night themed UI.
6. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 07 Nov 2012, 05:25 9 0
Maybe they should and i cant knock your own personal experience, but somehow i get the feeling some authors have their mind already made up and dont like to give credit where credit is due..........So we shall see what the response is when Sony does "improve" on software.....
10. eisenbricher posted on 07 Nov 2012, 05:38 2 0
Can't deny your thoughts as well... actually everyone has some bias towards some platform/brand.
Sony needn't do anything much, just addition of one more theme should suffice, or introduction of some small UI tweaks. It'll be like a breeze of fresh air.

i for one love Sony UI.Hating touchwiz on my S2
36. OptimusOne posted on 07 Nov 2012, 14:53 0 0
well the sony ui is quite simple. root your phone, flash CM9/10 on it. go to google type in "xperia cm9 theme", there should be an xda post by jasonevil that will also include an HDPI theme. install that. that will give you xperia framework/icons. then go to google, type in xperia s launcher. install that and that will give you the launcher

Amen
They actually came a long way from x10's crappy timescape UI. The new User eXperience is so much better now. Though they still have a lot to do in terms of customization and little cool gimmicks that touchwiz and sense has.

HOHOHO...I was just telling you yesterday, mate. Welcome to PA - where s**tsung and c*Apple receive speacial treatment. I guess it has something to do with their marketing expenditure.
Hey PA, enough of this garbage. TW is THE s**ttiest GUI . It's just bad looking and still, after years, looks like a cheap knockoff of iOS. On the other hand, Sony's UI is the least crappy UI on android phones. You could mention Sense if you really had to. But I'm just shocked how you guys are talking in favor of android skins which all should go down the toilet. BS of an article.
35. OptimusOne posted on 07 Nov 2012, 14:46 0 0
just ship it with stock android and every tech geek/developer will ditch the sammy/lg nexus devices and go for sony :)
sony can customize it. they could add a custom launcher, and maybe a few custom apps like timescape. Ill be ok with that.

Here's wishing the best to SONY...its always good if the top players have competition.
That being said it wouldn't hurt SONY to lower its prices a bit...even in bad times they maintain the premium brand pricing tag which hurts their sales even more...

if you are a SE user from feature phone days, you'll love their UI on android also.. its beautiful its simple and not tacky.
I think little good needs to come from software and more good needs to come from hardware specs.
Sony has some real amazing phone designs with current phones in market, its just their every phone feels lacking something or the other.
I've Xperia S, i love this sexy phone but need to change and if by next year sony don't bring that XYZ factor... i might be off to default nexus line or windows phone world !!!

There's nothing wrong with Sony UI. I have an xperia S. It's quiet good for everyday usage

Ray, Sony mobile is already profitable.
When the company was a joint venture, they were making profit at over 7 million smartphone units per quarter sold.
Now they are selling almost 9 million.
Also, remember that HTC still has an operating profit at 7 million units.
And I totally disagree on your points - software part of Sony is great, actually the best android UI for an average consumer.
It's the hardware that is somewhat trailing behind direct rivals - namely processors, screens and battery life.
27. oister85 posted on 07 Nov 2012, 09:50 0 0
Are you sure they are profitable? I heart they were losing.
30. Velda posted on 07 Nov 2012, 10:50 1 0
Yes, but it's a whole division including phones, tablets and notebooks with some accessories. And only phones are profitable for Sony, but tablets and mainly notebooks not. :-(

Really Sony fanboys? All the sony phones out now are really big, heavy, and just plain ugly!

I think Sony's UI is the best of the lot right now, Touchwiz with its bright colours and crazy font may look cool to start, but you are going to get bored in a month or 2. Sense is decent as well but still too much of it. But Sony's is versatile, it looks good whether you're a business man or a teenager. Also I reckon SONY is going to come out on top, cause they aren't getting dragged into all the legal battles and they going their own direction, not following everyone else. Nice job Sony.

Oh please.. SG III I admit is really good, but to compare Touchwiz UI to Timescape UI is just crazy. Touchwiz bores me to freakin death. Timescape is kinda futuristic and well designed.
Who's with me?
25. darac posted on 07 Nov 2012, 09:03 2 0
I wouldn't go to such lengths as you, but i tend to agree..
Have a GSIII and TW is okay visually but still pretty rough around the edges, i just think timescape is better designed, subtle and refined yet futuristic.
I hate that you can't change the theme in TW, unlike in Xperia UI

I prefer sony ui than other, that make me think hard to try custom rom just because jb. Sony don't have attention grabbing hardware and no marketing. I don't know what they are doing, but their support getting worse.
29. noim1 posted on 07 Nov 2012, 09:55 2 0
In my Point of View SONY has the best looking UI of all the Androids out there ....i have used Sam , HTC , SONY ...but the SONY's UI is more attractive than any other ....i always tend to go towards SONY ...SONY only needs to Beef up its hardware along with its competition ..i think it is only late on that PART ..
31. toyds123 posted on 07 Nov 2012, 11:04 1 0
sony is like LG. yup, they have the hardware. but they lack so much software. personally, i use an LG and i would definitely buy an LG again. man they are durable. but they lack the software. but for me, i always go for durability. my sister has an optimus one which is already 2years old and has dived in pools for so many times, but at the end of the day, it still works. but sluggish ever since. i have an optimus black. 1 year old l. fell off a car while traveling, spilled beer on it, and the back has cracked because of intensive dropping. but it still works like a charm with cm10

I think Sony are in 3rd place now behind Samsung and Apple.
34. gallitoking posted on 07 Nov 2012, 13:00 1 4
The only way I see Sony shipping 50 million Smartphones is if the rent their trucks to Apple.
38. rusticguy posted on 07 Nov 2012, 19:52 0 0
Sony is next on Apple's To Do List of "suing manufacturers" but Appla feel the warmth of pee in pants every time they think of doing it ... one fight against samsung and see how many corpses came falling from the cupboard that stacks "stolen ideas/work/techynology" at Apple Inc. I think you need to look outside of US also when it comes to definition of world and sony is moving up :)

I think before they go trying other platforns, they should go back to profitability first with android.
