Sony Xperia Z screen comparison, more camera samples emerge

0. phoneArena 18 Jan 2013, 07:12 posted on

The display comparison picture with other current flagships reveals something we've noticed on all Sony high-ends with the Mobile BRAVIA Engine tech - weak viewing angles and greyscale black levels. Colors get significantly washed out and brightness is diminished when you tilt the phone in any direction, so that's something you'd have to live with when it comes to the Xperia Z as well...

i dont know but washed out colors viewing in wide angles doesn't seems to bother me at all. im not going to look at it side ways that often though i have to say its eye catching. having a good viewing angle only matters for people who keeps on bragging their phone or keep showing it without using it. what is more important to me is sunlight legibility i hope sony makes it legible. for white magic technology in xperia p is really good even under the bright sunlight., how i hope they include it with xperia z but anyways i cant wait for the upcoming review of this phone! :)

I agree with you. But in fact the reason of full-HD on =< 5 inch screen is useless also (thought that Pentile tech probably needs it) . People are still crazy about the "wonderful" numbers on paper, so this is still pretty disappointed (for some)

Agree with you, but it is still seen from wide angle. I hope sony will make it total black from side view. I use my phone for privacy and security not for bragging screen to other who can see what I'm doing. People who want wide viewing angle maybe lack of self confident so they need it to lift their coolness

Xperia Z don't use TFT. It uses Japan Display's LED-backlit Neo-IPS

Look at my link man. It's a Neo-IPS. Japan Display is Sony's LCD manufacturer. Sony is one of the owner of JDI.

It does matter on some situations, like if you are seeing a video on your phone and your friend wants to see too you both can't see the screen head on, i found the excellent viewing angles on my One X to be quite useful but thats me. I will get thumbed down for this but Sony fans try to make the cons of their phones look like not a con, look at the Xperia S, "OMG THA BEST PHOONE EVAAARRR!!!11!1!1ONE!!1" and it failed miserably. (Don't get me wrong i love the Xperia S's sexy design.)

(you know? the blueish tinted screen and plastic build? as well as their stolen ideas........ooops :( )

known as much as the "nit picky" things with sony..........then i will have nothing to say......

TFT can refer to any lcd technology actually, there is a pretty good chance its IPS we will have to wait a few weeks for proof though.

I think people place too much importance on viewing angles which is not a crucial handicap and less on brightness of screen which for a device that is meant to be used very often outdoors is an extremely important matter. The Z may have poor viewing angles but one of the brightest screens (even without White Magic). The Super AMOLED screens, like the one on the Galaxy S3 are notoriously dim under the sun. So, what do you prefer? I bright screen visible under the sun, or one with great viewing angles that is hardly discernible under the sun?

Honestly the s3 screen isn't notoriusly dim.. have you ever used one? My s3 perfectly fine even under the very bright sunlight.. it just not as bright as the lcd though.. but it's perfectly fine trust me.. or maybe some people really2 have problem with their eyes..

I dont think any of this matters with any of these screens. I always keep the brightness down all of the way on my GS3 because even at night, its too bright and it hurts my eyes.

I'm just talking about objective criteria and what I have read. The Xperia Z manages a brightness of 500 candelas and the S3 less than 300. I also have read that the S3 screen washes out quickly under strong sun. Even if to your experience the GS3 is adequate in brightness, the Z is obviously still much brighter, which is what objectively counts, so forget about the poor viewing angles.

Wiewing angles only matter if you like to share content, 99% of the time I am looking straight at my phone so I don't care what the view angles are.

The biggest flaw seems to be battery life, 4 hours of screen time reported on 4.1.2. More excited than ever for the Oppo which has the same camera module, Sonyesque design, but an IPS screen and 2500mAh battery (which still seems underjuiced for fullHD/S4 Pro). The Galaxy S4 and AMOLEDFHD is looking more and more the final hope, although at 3000mAh the Huawei D2 certainly offers some solid level of energy.

washed out colors on some videos maybe due to the wallpaper used and on the home screen if you use a whitish wallpaper it will make the screen more light due to the ui on app drawer ithas a semi transparent rectangular background for the icons. and when you view videos and pictures where the Z uses a dark wallpaper the screen looks good to me. and btw who made the comparison for the second pic?

my nokia n86 is equipped with AMOLED as well and its viewing angles are perfect, but i don't understand why someone should look at his phone from angles?
the important case is the sharpness and vividness of colors when you look at it straight forward and in that aspect Sony will defeat every rival. don't focus on unimportant matters.
camera samples are perfect as well.

Just few days ago, in a bus full of people, a guy who was on the seat and using his shiny new touchscreen phone with really gorgeous screen. He switched to a chat app and that app asked for Password, that was the moment he must have hated because as soon as he press first letter it shows up of course and screen was easily seen from any direction.

That guy looked around all the people above him, he tried to tilt his set, no use, he tried to cover screen with his hand and had to remove quickly because he must have pictured himself doing it too. At the end he had to go through punching all the letters and anyone could see what he typed.

My point is, good viewing might be WANTED in tablets, but for a phone it maybe not as good as it is a selling point. It is not about only password, personally I don't want just anyone to see what I am texting either. Or if I am dialing a number and so on.

View angles for phones is a gimmick, do you look at your phone from 100-180 degree angles? I highly doubt it.
