Sony Xperia J gets Jelly Bean update unexpectedly
0. phoneArena posted on 08 Mar 2013, 10:21
If you own the Sony Xperia J, you might need some smelling salts today after hearing that your phone is being updated to Andorid 4.1 even though it has a single-core 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM; other handsets with similar specs can't even get updated to Android 4.0 which makes this a very strange announcement indeed...

Remember Xperia S? 2012 Sony Flagship?
WTF are you thinking Sony?
Bring JB to Xperia S ASAP -_-
28. rusticguy posted on 09 Mar 2013, 03:07 1
Actually they are working in "Alphabetical" order 9since they lost track of all alphabets that they attached to their phones) ... so J comes before P and that comes before S, SL etc. Whoever gave it to T first did it by mistake
24. soshi posted on 08 Mar 2013, 21:28 1
My phone always Sony Ericsson and always happy with their service but I think I won't have Sony phone if they treat costumer like this. Arc S will be my last love for SE
3. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 10:47 14
And this is how Sony slaps their own customers in the face. The XJ has worse hardware than any 2011 Xperia handset, yet older devices were given the could shoulder.
The more I hear about this, the more I hate Sony and their bad practices. Don't get me wrong, I do own and actively use my Xperia Mini Pro. It's a great device, but support from it's OEM is just awful. Don't be surprised if Sony's beloved XZ doesn't make it to Android 5.
5. boosook posted on 08 Mar 2013, 11:44 6
2011 handsets don't have enough internal memory to support JB, even with ICS you are limited in the number of apps you can install. What's more, two years have passed and I think we can be content.
The real problem IMHO is that they won't upgrade 2012 handsets like U and Sola that are far more powerful than the J, and that S and P users are still waiting.
6. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 12:12 6
System memory != User apps/Data memory
It doesn't really matter which Android version you install, the amount of user apps won't be affected.
Also, almost two years old, so what? Ask samsung if that stopped them from upgrading the S2. Sony should admit they're pushing 2011 devices down the trash can, otherwise they're proving their devices are not future proof.
7. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 12:17 1
Oh, and I forgot, you can move nearly any app on existence to external memory, so user space is a non-issue.
we're not on cupcake anymore.
10. hrtbeat posted on 08 Mar 2013, 12:58 0
Really pixelado?. I am not able to spot to moving it my external memory card?? :(
not my words : I have seen somewhere else XJ users can easily switch to other better phones just to retain them they have given to XJ and not to many other phones which are capable enough ...
15. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 13:39 0
Yes, you can. App2SD should do the trick, otherwise you might want to move them manually, that's what I do on my XMP.
BTW the Miro and Tipo were even lower end handsets. If sony released JB for the XJ just to prevent users from flocking to another brand, giving it to all three low-end phones would have been the right thing to do.
Now sit back and watch Xperia S owners roll in agony and regret.

dude i got the xperia play and i am running android 4.1.2 with face unlock and ofline voice support what are you talking about not enough memory psh smh
23. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 19:53 0
The Xperia Play cant handle anything above Gingerbread, they said.
It ruins the user experience, they said.
4. Samir_Maric posted on 08 Mar 2013, 11:03 6
i hate sony because of duel core processor phone xperia u and sola not updated to jelly bean but single core processor xperia j got it both are 2012 handsets i dont know why sony do this???
8. xperiaDROID (limited) 6 days ago posted on 08 Mar 2013, 12:43 7
Don't forget Xperia Neo L, Tipo and Miro, they are also having single core processors, why the J can have JB but not those three phones?
14. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 13:35 5
Oh, right, the Neo L. The phone is basically a 2011 device. I'll be REAAAALLY mad at Sony if they release JB for it.

This is a good news for the Tipo owners, and thank you for the link by the way.
35. VADroidTS555 posted on 09 Mar 2013, 22:27 0
If J got JB, then Tipo may also get.
The only difference is 800 MHz CPu, camera and screen size.
So Tipo may get JB, not sure though!
Fingers crossed! (I've Tipo)
30. vignesh_chn posted on 09 Mar 2013, 04:13 0
JB needs a good GPU! besides Processor and RAM. Sony U has Mali GPU which shares RAM to run graphics apps, This will lead to RAM shortage if it gets JB. Whereas Xperia J has Adreno 200 GPU which does not require RAM memory to be shared. So Single or dual core does not matters here. !! U will never get JB.. sorry.. !!
40. Samir_Maric posted on 11 Mar 2013, 09:40 0
What about xperia go? Its also has Mali-400 GPU and 512mb RAM but it's got JB why???
9. Adragon360 posted on 08 Mar 2013, 12:53 0
run pretty smooth...but..its kindda unfair 4 sola...im using xperia j...
11. ryq24 posted on 08 Mar 2013, 13:10 3
Xperia j was the worst reviewed Sony phone I have ever read and this could be the reason why Sony decided to upgrade this phone first so as to try to solve the lagging problem which was the main complaint of all the reviews I read.
12. xperiaDROID (limited) 6 days ago posted on 08 Mar 2013, 13:13 0
Xperia J
Design- Not Bad
Performance- URGHHH........
16. vignesh_chn posted on 08 Mar 2013, 14:07 0
See ryq24 you may have read worst reviews all around, but xperia J is a phone that has every feature that a smart phone should have, I agree its configuration are not upto the mark when compared to other sony devices. but it has its unique features too. As a user of this phone I did not notice any lags so far, and yes I do not use powerful apps.. the latest xperia is J released at the end of 2012 that may be the only reason for this update.. So dont just blame xperia J.. its worth for its money..
19. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 15:26 0
"the latest Xperia is J released at the end of 2012"
Irrelevant. Why would that matter anyway. By saying that you're implying people should always wait for the last Xperia to be released each year (not a good sign for the XZ).
Sony should have planned their update schedule better, putting the former flagships first and low-ends
20. pixelado posted on 08 Mar 2013, 15:28 0
(damn, accidentally hit "post reply")
they should put their former flagships first and low-ends second, that's what sammy does, and would you look at how it worked out for them.
Worth the money? Yeah, nah, congrats on rebuying X10 parts on a 2012 device.
29. vignesh_chn posted on 09 Mar 2013, 04:08 0
You have to blame SONY for not maintaining customer support for older devices, Instead you are blaming xperia J. Nothing has been confirmed yet by sony. For what device you are waiting for to get JB ??
32. pixelado posted on 09 Mar 2013, 08:21 0
Huh? I'm not blaming the XJ, I'm just saying it has x10 specs, that's all.
I've been expecting JB to hit the Sola and the Go. My mini pro is officially out of the update cycle so I lost my hopes there :(
17. vignesh_chn posted on 08 Mar 2013, 14:17 0
Can any one please say does it runs smoothly on J ??
31. r2sd.pa posted on 09 Mar 2013, 07:00 1
Just had my JB Update, I just love Project Butter!!
Everything is as smooth as...any flagship, But only until you open an app, well, believe me you will hate temple run 2 after playing it once in XJ(with JB::was better when it ran ICS)..
Now, about the JB Update
Pro:
Better Overall UI Smoothness
Better Notification
GNOW
Cons:
In-app performance is slightly down
(Doubtful of having a slightly slower wifi-Have to check)
Overall: No. of Pros > No. of Cons
One more strange thing, when I exit a heavy app(like Temple Run), the UI takes a good 10(sometimes 15) seconds to load again.Never had such a long delay with ICS.May be a software bug??
43. fillipm posted on 13 Mar 2013, 12:30 0
Hi I received the update too and its smooth and nice working now. Once question i have is - is there any visible difference with the icons and screens ? and Was the camera upgraded in any way ?
48. 9480555768 posted on 21 Mar 2013, 05:43 0
no big deference seen in the UI and icons. camera is same as prev.
33. kevinC posted on 09 Mar 2013, 09:54 0
Now I have just received the jelly bean update. And it's fast and smooth. I tried to open a number of apps and some apps open faster than before and others don't open at all like Tetris. The swiping didn't get slower it remained constant. So it's good. Can't wait for jb 4.2
42. r2sd.pa posted on 11 Mar 2013, 09:57 0
How much can you score in Temple Run 1??
Mine doesn't go beyond a certain score....its simply stops and the application closes.
34. Imbatman posted on 09 Mar 2013, 17:53 0
Whats with all the hate for a company giving out an update? They gave an update out to a phone, give them time and they may bring it to others. Dont bitch and hate when your phone just happens to not be the one they selected this time. At least they are getting the update out.
36. DBSubba posted on 10 Mar 2013, 00:45 0
I have a problem on Sony Xperia J. Today when I saw the update of Jelly bean in the net, I connected my handset to my PC and checked the updates. I was written that there are updates. I started the updates as per the directions given however after a while I got my handset is switched off. When I tried to switched it on, it only displays SONY on its screen and nothing comes. I kept it for a long time thinking that it is waiting time but after waiting 2 hour it is the same. Someone tell me what happen to my device. It is quite new, I bought it last week.
38. reese posted on 10 Mar 2013, 01:55 0
try to turn it off then turn it on.. after updating it will automatically shut down..
37. reese posted on 10 Mar 2013, 01:53 1
i have updated my xperia j and now it runs smoother and faster. as a user, i did not have any problem about this phone. maybe those who are complaining WHY XJ is upgraded to jb and not their phones, just take it easy men. you will have your time. and xperia j is not a bad phone. actually it is really a SMART phone. don not hate the phone. it has nothing to do with you. :) THUMBS UP for XJ and Jelly Bean Upgrade.. ^^
44. fillipm posted on 13 Mar 2013, 12:32 0

39. DBSubba posted on 11 Mar 2013, 04:14 0
The problem is still the same. It is displaying nothing other than SONY.

i cant update after download until 100% it stated could not download... T.T why
46. anilreddy12001 posted on 21 Mar 2013, 01:08 0
One important mistake that most phone users make is that they feel RAM is everything..There are so many other components that make up a phone and on which the performance depends upon.: Graphics Processor, frequency, display quality, battery, etc..All these factors are crucial in deciding whether a phone gets the update or not. Xperia J has a Andreno 200 graphics processor that performs well(atleast when compared with other entry level phones, it is better). It even has hardware acceleration which enhances the speed.

hey guys,
Just updated my xperia J to android version 4.1.2
The update is very unstable. Everytime i open an app like Play Store or Album
it keeps showing me this message "Unfortunately the process android.process.media has stopped"
What the hell do i do??
is there any way to downgrade or some other solution??
Plzz Help
50. djerpoy13 posted on 24 Mar 2013, 21:33 0
After the update, my phone:
runs faster
better response
got short lags
shorter battery life (maybe because of the OS)
longer phone loading after boot-up
Apps/Games don't always run (OS compatibility issue)
51. buzsuforever posted on 24 Mar 2013, 21:34 0
My Sony Xperia J is still with Ice Cream Sandwich!
I checked to update with software or on the phone, it says: "Up to date" :(((

Hi, Just want to ask if this is normal. My XJ is still on ICS but when i check it using PC Companion, it says my Version is up to date. Am i doing the right thing?
53. djerpoy13 posted on 04 Apr 2013, 04:47 0
Using the PC Companion is the only way to upgrade/update your phone..
I don't know why it says like that.. But if i were you, don't upgrade your phone yet.. apps on XJ doesn't run well. I can't even play Temple Run 2
