The Sony i1 Honami, the expected flagship successor to the Xperia Z, is likely not to have a sensor as large as the one on the Nokia Lumia 1020…

Oops, those expecting the Honami to be a Lumia 1020 killer is going to be disappointed!!

They are not :)

Nokia Lumia 1020 is pure evil, which can tame the baddest of all. SONY i1 alias Honami barely would survive its blow smacked straight on face.
56. james004 (Posts: 471; Member since: 15 May 2013)
this guy didnt even read the article, and he says honami will be disappointment.
a person who had hands on experience is clearly stating that image processor puts honami on par with lumia 1020.
sure lumia is ahead with over sampling pictures at 38mp but i have never printed a poster from any picture i took from my phone nor i plan to do that in future.
at most i upload at google plus which only accepts 8mp.
dont use facebook/twitter but for people that do, it only has 5mp capability so keep that in mind when thinking of all these high specs camera.

Honami will have awesome camera for sure
no doubt in that
Those u r babbling about nokia nokia and coming here in sony's article are sure haters and dont want sony to revive cybershot era
63. belovedson (Posts: 830; Member since: 30 Nov 2010)
so comparing a shot from a dslr against a phone camera is a fair comparison?
camera phone serves really two functions: to work as a phone and two to replace a point and click and now it appears may start fizzling out zoom out cameras
110. Shatter (Posts: 1967; Member since: 29 May 2013)
Phones are getting good enough to replace those $100 digital cameras but they aren't even close to as good as a decent DLSR.
76. Nathan_ingx (Posts: 2992; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
Uh...did you miss my point??
I never said the Honami will be a disappointment.
"THOSE expecting the Honami to be be a Lumia 1020 killer..." is what i wrote.
Some people are ready to swallow things before they even chew it!

Well, in a way, it is going to be a "Lumia 1020 killer". I mean if rumors hold any truth (and also based on the recent announcement of the Xperia Z Ultra), the Honami will feature a Snapdragon 800 processor with an Adreno 330 GPU which offers 5 times the graphical performance of the Adreno 225 in the Lumia 1020. This means that all of the latest graphical games (and any graphical games of the foreseeable future) will run great on it.
Now, in terms of the camera, you are correct the Lumia 1020 will still be king. However, I do see the Honami offering comparable camera performance that may be enough for the average person. I think it will also boil down to whether people want a Windows Phone device or an Android device.
Finally, big note here in the article I must point out:
"Sony could make changes in the final product and it likely will."
I'm pretty sure Sony saw the same press conference you and I did, and I'm pretty sure they know that they have to tweak their product before it hits the shelves later this year in order to better compete with the Lumia 1020. At least if they're smart that is what they should do.
81. neutralguy (Posts: 1152; Member since: 30 Apr 2012)
Lol. Many people bashed lumia 1020 because of the small white dots that accompanied the full res of a low lit shot. Thank you for your comment sir.
Lumia 1020 may not take the most detailed shot in low lit situations but for sharing, I guess this would dominate the mobile industry. The second gen OIS, and the BSI tech that didnt came with 808 might compensate for the sensor size the 1020 has.
Now, for the honami. People said that honami will be a 1020 killer, let's see about this. I have no doubts on what sony can do with the cybershot branding. But damn, when it comes to software side, they always get left behind. If only the cybershot app could compensate with that, it could challenge 1020. But I doubt it beating 1020.
84. XPERIA-KNIGHT (Posts: 2384; Member since: 08 Aug 2012)
yea, same here. im worrying about sony messing up the software side again and not optimizeing anything :(
112. Damo579 (Posts: 131; Member since: 18 May 2013)
I agree and don't forget Nokia takes about 4-6 months to tweak the software for the camera to improve image quality. The 1020 takes amazing photos now but the quality will improve trust me. I'm sure Nokia is working on it already.
113. james004 (Posts: 471; Member since: 15 May 2013)
you will find no article that says honami will be lumia killer. it is all these immature commenters saying it will be lumia 1020 killer. 1020 has big sensor so it has hand ahead of sony.
8. EXkurogane (Posts: 863; Member since: 07 Mar 2013)
Okay, Lumia 1020 wins.
Putting sensor size aside, no Xenon flash as well. If i want to add in more, ISO up to 1600? Lumia 92X (with Amber update) and 1020 go up to 3200, although i never use more than ISO600 on a phone or photos get too noisy.
53. dexter_jdr (Posts: 1090; Member since: 28 Jun 2012)
iso 3200 wont get noisy on lumia 1020. :P
57. james004 (Posts: 471; Member since: 15 May 2013)
da fak is wrong with your people. iso 3200? :/ have you even taken picture with that rate? lumia already has slow shutter rate add this iso. forget using your phone for next 20 seconds.
60. dexter_jdr (Posts: 1090; Member since: 28 Jun 2012)
then why do cameras have option for 3200? they have the xenon flash, lens optics and mechanical shutter.
1020 got them too.
74. EXkurogane (Posts: 863; Member since: 07 Mar 2013)
i just mentioned i use only up to 600 on a phone, as for ISO3200, yes, you do need that much especially in DSLRs. Ever wondered why DSLRs have ISO up to 12800, and expandable up to an ISO of 25600? I personally dont go that high (pumping up ISO blindly is something that amateurs do), but some people do use that high.
115. james004 (Posts: 471; Member since: 15 May 2013)
oh good, though i would say i barely see much difference when changing ISO in phones. may be their sensor arent powerful enough. if i compare it to a P&S camera the changes are sudden and obvious after changing the iso.
82. sbw44 (Posts: 363; Member since: 04 Dec 2012)
Based on this and the above comment it clearly shows you have no knowledge in photography or you just can't accept that Nokia makes better camera's then Sony and the rest of the competition!
114. james004 (Posts: 471; Member since: 15 May 2013)
i dont know about photography but i do know how to use DSLR thats why i said 3200 iso is crazy unless you are taking picture of Mars or Milky way.
as for 1020, specs wise its ahead of sony and i accept that. as for it being better, not to sure about it until we get sample from each phone to compare.
73. pyradark (Posts: 740; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
yup 1020 wins in camera, but on overall phone
Sony honami wins, even 1020 cant survive underwater
95. dexter_jdr (Posts: 1090; Member since: 28 Jun 2012)
technically yes it wont survive. BECAUSE nokia didnt make it water proof.
unlike sony who focused on sleek phone + water proof for high end model. well duh. they intend to make it water proof
29. Kurai (unregistered)
The honami will be par with nokia 1020 but i doubt honami will kill 1020 in terms of camera . . . but 1020 against honami overall? LOL . . . talk about dual core and one of the worst battery life. nokia L920's battery is more worse than the Z
35. EXkurogane (Posts: 863; Member since: 07 Mar 2013)
Windows phone in general, if battery life is bad it's the apps at fault, those poorly written and optimized apps. Whatsapp on windows phone is utter garbage (i dont use it anyway, regardless of what OS im using for a phone), and some other causes battery drain just by having its specific live tile active on the homepage.
My Lumia 920 i can get 1-2days of usage easily, 1 whole day with data on is no problem. Battery drain did happen but improved after a couple of updates, and i got rid of offending apps. Even some 3rd party battery level-monitoring and charting apps causes drain.
54. muhsen (Posts: 241; Member since: 07 Jun 2012)
worst battery life? ...I have a 920 and my father has an xperia z ....my 920 wins in battery life with a respectable margin
not to mention crappy screen (its horrible , just a slight tilt will not make u see what's in the xperia z's screen) compared to the 920's awesome clearblack display (this beats any phone screen) I have ever seen in the sun light )and its awesome viewing angles.
besides what's point of more than duel core when every heavy game on wp store runs better on the high end wp dvices than many quadcore android phones.
I played N.O.V.A.3 on the both the 920 and the xperia z and there's very very slight stutter from time to time(like once per day and just for sec or sth and its hardly noticeable ) on the xperia z while there wasn't any on the 920( the difference in performance between the two phones is barely noticeable) but still that means that it runs smoother (even if very marginally) on the 920...so again what's the point of bragging about very powerful hardware if everything runs just as smooth (if not better) on duelcore wp's ? actually that puts points on wp's side on against it
91. juandante (Posts: 236; Member since: 23 Apr 2013)
Irrelevant comparison. Z is Full HD while the lumia is an outdated 1280x768.
Compare later, when, if one day that happens, lumia will be Full HD.
67. x_maly_x (Posts: 61; Member since: 01 Jun 2013)
My Lumia 920 i can get 2-5days of usage (5 if I only call or text)
30. vandroid (Posts: 251; Member since: 04 Sep 2012)
There's no garuntee yet but its very likely Sony could have a trick up their sleeve, we'll have to wait and see but until then the lumia 1020 is the smartphone camera king
34. Nathan_ingx (Posts: 2992; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
Until the official launch and review of the phone, i'll remain skeptical. But that doesn't mean Sony cannot bring something new and awe inspiring to it's camera. They have that capacity...everyone knows it. They just have to put more effort into it.
36. SakuroAkino (banned) (Posts: 141; Member since: 12 Jul 2013)
Everything is just a rumour
Let us wait for an official announcement
38. vandroid (Posts: 251; Member since: 04 Sep 2012)
I'm taking this all with a grain of salt and waiting impatiently for the unveiling

The more excitement grows
The more famous this honami gets
69. tashreef (Posts: 476; Member since: 24 Nov 2012)
they need some exceptionaly good engineers, like Nokia..... sony camera division can only make good sensors... how to make them perfect on a smartphone is up to sony mobile
33. SakuroAkino (banned) (Posts: 141; Member since: 12 Jul 2013)
These are all just rumours
honami will pack 1/1.6 sensor as illustrated before by vr zone
And i dont think , sony will ruin or let down its cybershot name if its a cybershot branded phone as k800i and others in past
39. EXkurogane (Posts: 863; Member since: 07 Mar 2013)
In my opinion it is impossible to pack in 1/1.6 if the camera is at the top corner and yet maintain a Xperia Z-like thickness, instead of somewhere in the middle. There simply isnt enough space for it. 1/2.3 is more of the size found in lower end point and shoots. Still bigger than those in smartphones though (1/3 to 1/3,2).
42. SakuroAkino (banned) (Posts: 141; Member since: 12 Jul 2013)
The leak image can also be xperia z running sd800 processor
so all we can do is just wait for it
55. dexter_jdr (Posts: 1090; Member since: 28 Jun 2012)
and then they say "this xperia honami will put sony's RX1 sensor in it!!!"
58. Feanor (Posts: 293; Member since: 20 Jun 2012)
I don't understand why people are so intend in comparing this forthcoming Sony with the Lumia 1020. The 1020 is quite a dedicated cameraphone with no-compromises camera tech and a considerable hump. I think the Honami is supposed to be a general flagship intend on taking on the Galaxy S4 and the iPhone and quite abit thinner. I think Sony want to improve on the camera department enough to make it a very capable shooter but no 1020 competitor.
77. pwnarena (Posts: 824; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
not really. it is still a windows smartphone comparable to the lumia 920. it even has the same thickness. the complaints about sony being unable to match it is probably in sony's stupid claim that their xperia z and later smartphones are "the best of sony in a smartphone."
sony has an outstanding camera division so why isn't its best in the smartphone they call their best? nokia has no camera manufacturing arm but is able to trump sony in a field it supposedly has the expertise in.
94. Feanor (Posts: 293; Member since: 20 Jun 2012)
I think the Lumia 1020 is 10.5mm at its thinnest point and the camera bulge would make overall thickness close to 15mm. It's a long cry from the 7.9mm of the Z and possibly the thickness of the Honami. And I think in what you said is the truth. Nokia have no camera production, so they can go full power. Sony will kill entirely their camera sales if their mobile phones are so good. So they go instead for capable shooters in a super slim frame.
104. jackhammeR (Posts: 1548; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
your info is terribly wrong. Read, then state your opinion.
65. amiroo (Posts: 269; Member since: 03 Sep 2012)
sony 20 megapixel = 12 megapixel
nokia 8 megapixel = 12 megapixel
75. oister85 (Posts: 393; Member since: 27 Apr 2012)
So this phone is supposed to be a camera phone but I don't see the phone to be bulky.if Sony manage to deliver a good picture quality.the next big thing is here.
2. ihatesmartphone (unregistered)
Watch out Lumia 1020, Honami is coming :)
6. Alex123 (Posts: 191; Member since: 17 Oct 2012)
I don't think Sony can complete Nokia at all as its 13mp on the Xperia Z is not a brilliant at all, it perform similar to an 8mp on the Galaxy S3 so how can 20mp compare with the Nokia's 41mp. Dream on!!!!
12. smallworld (Posts: 426; Member since: 13 Jul 2012)
I'm sure if Sony wanted they could best Nokia with their cameras. I mean that they are no strangers when it comes to fitting big sensor in a small body :RX100, RX-1, NEX 5,6,7. And of course the technology that comes with that.
16. cam-whore (Posts: 164; Member since: 21 Feb 2013)
they do have the technology, problem is, they don't know how to use it...
90. jackhammeR (Posts: 1548; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
yeah right. They´re runner-up because they DON´T WANT TO BEST Nokia. Do you see any sense in your opinion. Or maybe it´s too hard to be a sony fanboy looking how they oem will fail to deliver once again. But, what´s more sad, it´s you and akin to you who make such buzz around this phone.
13. abcdefgh (banned) (Posts: 471; Member since: 29 Mar 2013)
xperia z on par with s3(in terms of cam)?.
youve seriously gone wrong somewhere.even xperia s take better photos than xperia z
80. ihatesmartphone (unregistered)
What complete? LOL XD
19. ianbbaa (Posts: 196; Member since: 20 Mar 2013)
Every single phone from SONY was expected to have the best cam ever on a phone at that time of release...real life always proved to be the opposite....remember 2011 line with ARC, NEO - the best 8mpx ever with exmor r and all the comerciall stories - i went to NEO cause promotion told me the best cam ever...pics was even worse as on my old HTC DESIRE that time. I know that size of the chip matter in a cam, so on the phone.
Even i have DSLR from SONY (only becasue of A-mount and use od old MINOLTA lenses) i would say NOKIA 1020 is the photoking right now.
As i wrote earlier in my post - time to switch to WinPhone as a lot of us do not care about power snapdragons and antutu "housenumbers", i make call, read email, casual angry birds gamer, and nice photo on the go is the feature that matter to me. And the physical sizes kills all the other competitors.
31. Kurai (unregistered)
that's the past . . . remember the CEO just changed recently
4. tech2 (Posts: 1773; Member since: 26 Oct 2012)
Come on, Sony ! Please dont disappoint us again in camera department. I don't expect it to be a Lumia 1020 killer but make strong enough to atleast rival against GS4's and iPhone's camera !!!
Its your God damn sensor !! Make it work !
7. pwnarena (Posts: 824; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
what's next? smaller battery than expected to get that thin frame... if this is true, i hope sony fails. they never try doing things right. sony has a camera manufacturing division. nokia doesn't. why does nokia have the better implementation? sony will certainly disappoint if this turns out to be real.
9. rency0722 (Posts: 56; Member since: 12 Jun 2013)
We will go back into the era on Nokia vs. Sony (Ericsson) making the best cameraphones of all time.
Don't disappoint this time, Sony.
