It's not a secret that the battery life of the HTC ThunderBolt is not the device's strong side, but now a few reports...

I have to say that the power button is also faulty on some Thunderbolts. The button sinks into the body and becomes really hard to push. I already had to swap out one since it exhibited that problem (4 hours after buying it, too!). The 2nd one seems good for now.
Well...it's not even a month after release and this stuff is mass produced, so, we're bound to run into some problematic units.

I don't understand why companies have R&D departments? Why on earth can a company as big as Verizon & HTC have an EPIC FAIL like this in their hands? How do test their devices? You need a good Q&A department to make sure the phone will work as advertised. It's crazy that they can't test this device the way it should be, that way they can see these things & avoid all the PR mess that follows. BOTH companies should be held accountable for this unfortunate turn or events. Poor customers who waited to get this phone, all the hype & fanfare just to get a LEMON! Verizon is on a roll. They rip their customer off with bogus pricing as per the post that says they need to pay back the government 93 million & then drop untested devices. Sucks to be a Verizon customer right about now!!!

One of my friends is a tester for Verizon, and I can definitely say that he really doesn't test $hit on the phone. He typically gives me the new software and ask me for feedback. haha What a joke. That's why it doesn't suprise me when Verizon phone have error or some type of failure. Their testing department sucks. They are just worried on how cool they are for carrying a phone that isn't out yet. :)

actually the manufacturer tests the devices. in this case, that would be HTC. your story is bullshit, and the only thing your friend is testing at VZW is bloatware, which is garbage anyways.

Dude you are so wrong. Verizon test the hardware on their system. HTC tests the phone & Verizon tests it on their system. You got to be an idiot if you think a phone will go on Verizon's system without them testing it. Wow how can you post such a comment!

Yes but they also need to test how the phone works not just that it does. That is selling out Verizon as a bunch of idiots. It's quality control for their LTE network. Verizon needs to know that LTE needs a bigger battery. For it to be charges 3 times a day is crazy. You are the idiot my good sir! Mr. Evo, your comments are in bad taste. First, R&D departments are expensive. Second, HTC is more responsible for the development of the device itself. As an Evo owner, which is produced by the same company that gave us the Thunderbolt, you would understand that. Verizon is responisble for the LTE network that powers the device, and that has worked exceptionally well in the markets that have access to it. Third, this is brand new technology. If the history of electronics has taught us anything, its that new tech always experiences issues. That its a battery issue, and not a software or OS issue, users should consider themselves lucky. If you rushed headfirst into new tech without even waiting for the first wave of reviews, to see what the bugs would be, then thats your own issue.

HTC is not perfect, but I bet Verizon put pressure on them to drop a phone not yet ready for LTE the way it should be. So I completely agree with my statement before & stand by it. BOTH companies are responsible for this fiasco! Verizon should be more responsible in testing their LTE devices. LTE drains the battery & Verizon should know that. It is unacceptable for this to even be an issue!!! Hot batteries can be a defect or can be from using the wrong size battery on a battery draining network as LTE is!

You clearly have no knowledge of the world. Every major company in the entire computer and electronics industry (and others such as automobile, medical, etc.) has had some sort of issue with a component in their product line. Look at laptop batteries as an example that is similar to this. First of all, batteries aren't made by HTC or Verizon. Secondly, all it takes is one day at a battery factory with one little piece that isn't properly sealed for example, and you have several hundred or thousand problematic batteries. In the scheme of things, this figure is low considering the volume of products (computers and phones) being sold daily (easily in the range of millions). So yes, there are some issues but these are normal, especially for a new product. You won't find all issues when you only test a few hundred phones before release.

Yes you are right, but a hot battery due to an energy demanding LTE network or faulty battery? That in 2011 is unacceptable. Maybe back on 1996. What? Verizon test their LTE phones while they are plugged in? Well that doesn’t make too much sense. Look LTE is a good technology but you need a battery to handle it, Verizon should have asked for a bigger battery from the onset! That is clearly a Verizon mistake.

Why does it fall on Verizon to have to do the testing on a phone that is manufactured by a third party? Verizon is making an investment into this device too, don't forget. They spend the money (more money than Sprint, by the way) to fully test the network so that their promises actually hold up (who does that anymore?), they advertise the device, and they have to purchase the device from HTC in bunches, which is not cheap; somewhere in the $500 per device range. Multiply that by some 500,000 phones. Verizon doesnt have to test the device to ensure that it works; that is why they are paying for the phones.

Why wouldn't Verizon test the phones on their system. How can HTC do that from the other side of the world. Naturally Verizon has to do it. Who is responsible for this then. HTC gets an order from Verizon, HTC doesn't go to Verizon & say can we put a phone on this network. Verizon has to check what they order. What when you go to a restaurant you just eat your food, what if it has a hair, or a fingernail? You would never know because based on what you say you or Verizon doesn’t need to check to see if all is well.

Verizon is going to test how the phone runs on their network, yes. Does the 4G work? Check. Does the 3G work? Check. It is not Verizon's problem, nor is it their responsibility to make sure the battery, which comes from a seperate party away from Verizon and HTC, is adequate to run the device.
You dont fire the server because your grilled salmon came out with metal shavings. You fire the chef.

Yes & you get a new grill also. Like I have been saying BOTH are a fault. Verizon sould know their network to warrant that a bigger battery is needed to have a phone work well in a LTE network. If the battery isnt allowed to be an issue, then what is? Or do you demand a perfect device? Because if you do, then wake up, moron. With everything you ask your smartphone to do, and i can almost guarantee that you ask your Evo to run Pandora, Google Navigation, get text messages and reply to an email at the same time, be happy that poor battery life is the only issue you have.

I have had my thunderbolt for 2.5 weeks now, my phone works perfect. No heating issues as far as the battery. I go throughout the day without having to charge my phone twice.

I am running the phone normal, other people that have issues probably are not using an app task manager or simply got a bad battery, manufacturing issues occur for every product but only a small percentage. I would doubt HTC and Verizon would launch a phone in which 100% of the stock had a bad battery.....

i too dont have a battery problem. i take mine off the charger at 8:30 and with medium use it needs to be charged around 10pm. with heavy use maybe 8:30-9. but i keep a charger at my desk at work, so i just pop it on for 30 min at lunch and then i have no problems with it at all.
i will say that my friend rooted his thunderbolt. he then downloaded an app and makes the CPU run incredibly slow while the until is locked. he goes the entire day 8am - 11pm and still has half a battery left.

Thats exactly why the launch was delayed. Its a good thing it was, too, or the Thunderbolt would probably have more issues that a less-than-ideal battery life.

My battery got as hot as 115 degrees the first few days with a short battery life of 4-6 hours. Since I started using advanced task killer the battery stay about 89-92 degrees and battery life is about 10 hours. On occasion the push button doesn't work

Has Verizon or HTC owned up to this yet? The sooner the better- better to look guilty then helpless. They put a lot into this launch, and as skymitch89 pointed out, delayed it several times. Keep your people happy Verizon- deal with this problem. There is more competition then you think out there...

This is ironic because my fiance's Evo has had this exact problem since he purchased it, which was in June of last year, before the Thunderbolt was even THOUGHT of. I wonder if the Inspire is subject to this as well? I'd love to see if anyone can think of a solution other than swapping out the device.

I have had my Thunderbolt since release and I can say with 100% certainty that the phone is on par with most other phones on the market. Mass produced products will always fall into a bell curve and I am sure that the Thunderbolt has no more of a reliability issue than others. There will always be defects but I am sure these fall within the normal distribution. I would venture to guess that a lot of the issues fall into 1 of 3 categories. 1) defects do to manufacturing 2) OE Operator Error and 3) Nit-picky end users. A battery overheating issue is serious and I don't doubt that this is a real occurrence, but each would have to be taken on a case by case basis (i.e. what programs are running, signal strength, bluetooth/wifi/gps, etc...). I can also say that the long talked about battery issues are bunk! I get 2x the battery life out of my Thunderbolt than my Incredible and that's with 4G. If you want good battery life buy a dumb phone. No one complains about their laptop only getting 2-4 hours!

My mom's Thunderbolt gets hotter than mine on idle and especially when charging. Verizon stores in Chandler, AZ have dismissed it as not being a major problem. Also an FYI from March 25-28 Verizon was having activation problems with this phone dealing with the switching from 4G to 3G...it took four trips to the store before they even notified us of this problem and told us the only way to fix it was to hard reset the phone and reactivate it.

@pajara, the thunderbolt is pretty amazing but na man, your 4G kept dropping and your 3G was actually kinda slow lol.
As far as the battery issue, it probably was just a bad batch, just like with the iPhone's antenna issue, it was only a bad batch that had the issue and everyone freaked out about it, Apple even gave out those stupid free bumpers to shut people up. Hopefully this doesn't get as big as the iPhone issue, cuz its not

I used to work for apple technical support I would hate when customers would call in for signal issues, I know AT&T had to be blamed for most of that. It wasnt the iphones' fault completely.

Here is another piece of news that youprint but is already out: the Thunderbolt WILL keep the mobile hotspot unlimited also. It won't have a data cap as some of the other mobile hotspots options currently offered @ $20 for 2 gig. The unlimited mobile hotspot will work with up to 8 devices sharing the LTE connection for $30 on top of the standard $30 unlimited data. Yes, verizon will keep it's LTE unlimited. For now.
I feel sorry for Sprint. Things can only get worse for them. I don't think verizon want them due to too much overlapping in coverage, but you never know.
Warning- you damn phone will get hot if you do this..dont expect to keep a 10mbps wireless connection and have your phone stay cool as ice. Heck I thought my palm pre 2 would explote after allowing a xbox to connect to it for about 30mins. Never doing that again! Now with the Thunderbolt....thats a different story. I may get rid of my cable altogether.
plus I wanna be granfathered in. don't see a way verizon will keep this unlimited data for long, but who knows.

I don't care who's fault it is. I bought a phone for $260.00 and signed a two year contract. The phones needs to be recherged before I get through my workday and the damn thing gets so hot I can feel it through my pants pocket. HTC made it and Verizon sold it to me. I haven't had the thing for more than 10 days, they can argue about it once I return it tomorrow.

In the past 3 weeks I have had 2 Thunderbolts thinking that the first one I had was defective because it occasionally froze and overheated. Then, my second one overheated last night!!

I had the overheating issue in a major way yesterday - to the point that the back of the phone was unpleasant to hold. It had been sitting in its VZW holster for quite a while (ie. no use, screen off, etc). I took it out to charge, and noticed it was heating up (before I plugged it in to charge).
I turned it off, yanked the battery out (it was very warm) and then replaced it and powered the phone back on and left it to charge. 30 mins later the unit was no longer uncomfortably warm and had charged better than it had in several days.
I don't know if physically removing the battery had any effect, my suspicion is that "rebooting" the phone probably did something.
Since this incident I have continued using the phone as before and have yet to have the heating issue again. I did notice that the phone did not drain the battery as quickly last night as it has recently, but looking at my process manager I don't see much in the way of a difference process-wise.

I am experiencing overheating issues with my HTC Thunderbolt as well. The phone is barely 8 days old. It overheats while idle or recharging.
It is really hot to the touch, totally uncomfortable. I am new to smartphones but if there is one thing I know is that overheating can't be good for the user or the device itself.

My thunderbolt has an internal temp of 127 degrees. Loses battery life within the hour from full charge. I feel the interface of the phone is great, the hardware not so much.

My battery overheats and is dead by 2:pm everyday! One of the reasons I have a cell phone is for security, and this phone is hands down the least reliable phone I have ever had. Anyone have any idea of how to return it to Verizon?! I am even considering turning on my old blackberry again just to know that it will still be working should I have to disconnect from a charger!

I have the TB. Have the same heating problem. It tends to happen when I have my WiFi turned off and the internet mode on in 4G areas. The battery also faces huge drain when the heating occurs. If you turn off the internet function when you aren't using it, the battery will last all day and the heating doesn't occur. Stupid fix, but it works.

Yup, I had my HTC Thunderbolt for about a month so far and have noticed that it gets very hot frequently with the common random reboot. I understand that you aren't supposed to over-use the device but my god, if i can't casually text someone while listening to Pandora for less than 45 minutes, then whats the point?! I genuinely love the phone but the reboots and overheating is not acceptable. Hell just about an hour ago, my phone finally bricked from frying so much apparently. No i did not root it or whatever either.

I had the same problem, running hot while using Hot Spot, swapped it at VZN store on advice of tech support and experience the same probme. Store rep asked had I tried it with any other adapter and it got me thinking that I never have the problem when charging overnight in cradle. I have tried using the hotspot with the cradle purchased from VZN and while it heats up a little (111 degrees) it is no where near the 130 I experienced before. I am purchasing a second cradble for my office and the road.
