As owners of the Motorola Triumph deal with a flickering screen and a 5MP camera seems unwilling to AutoFocus, it would seem that the model that Virgin Mobile was counting on to grab some new Android subscribers has a software problem that probably just needs a firmware update...

For what they pay a month, I don't think they should be complaining. We all know very well Motorola doesnt make the best camera's for phones.

The thing is some people have the money, but choose not to pay an excessive amount of money monthly on their plans. & I don't blame them. Why pay all that money just to talk on the phone, text, & use data. On your laptop you can do that for free included w/ your data for unlimited usage. I myself pay $10 for high speed internet w/ my grandma's benefit's from AT&T. So, why would I want to pay something like $100 for the same thing on my cell phone? Granted there is a big difference between a cell phone & a laptop. But, that's not always where people's priorities are. Why pay more, when you can get about the same comparable thing for less? & what if that's all that's offered. You have great service as far as the plans, services, & coverage, & the only issue is the phone. If devices like this is all that's offered, obviously you don't have any other options to truly conclude "you get what you pay for" because you've paid for as much that's physically possible from your provider. I think your comment is also very ignorant/arrogant. People are only asking for what is advertised. If the phone has a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, I would expect me to have a 5 megapixel camera, & be able to use autofocus. If the phone is advertised to work as it's supposed on commercial's, I would expect my phone to do the same. It's not like somebody paid for a $20 phone that was used excessive & was 5 years old, & expected it to work like a brand new phone, & a current model device. $300 is still a great lump some of money. Most people don't even pay for their phones outright. They rely on contract extensions or new contracts to get subsidized prices devices/phones. So, if you're gonna say that, say that to everybody. Because there are phones worth $500 being sold for like $199 or less. Do they get what they paid for? They're paying less than somebody who may buy it out of contract or w/o an extension of their contract, but when it all boils down it's the same device. Should they expect the same quality? I think so.

Who is "they?" I have not read anyone, anywhere complaining about the Motorola Triumph. Yes, there's the usual trolls who complain about battery life, but those people post that about every phone, even the iPhone.
Check out sites polling the Motorola Triumph, it's getting great numbers.
And I'm not saying I represent the typical user, but as a former T-Mobile customer, who had that HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S 4G, SGS Vibrant, HD2, etc., I can represent that I did not buy the Motorola Triumph because of its camera. Matter of fact, having it almost a month I have yet to transfer pics from the phone to my PC to see how they turned out.
What I have done is enjoyed the phone's feel, form factor, 4.1" display, playing my DVD converted movies, all my Android apps, checking e-mails and playing streamed Netflix movies.
I can confidentally say that the camera is the least of my concerns, no, strike that, it's not a concern. If I want to shoot HD video or decent pics I break out one of my Lumix cameras.
Oh, and I especially enjoy paying $80 monthly for basically the same service I was getting at T-Mobile for $140 monthly (that's for 2 lines).
Of course, other's experience and priorities will differ. There's a reason why people are willing to camp out over night to get what I consider a technologically inferior handset (I mean no microSD slot, a battery the user can't replace, and no Adobe Flash support. But I'm sure it has a swell camera. LOL, where do I sign. I want to pay $3,000 for that device).

First of all not everyone can choose to throw money away on a Verizon or AT&T plan when they can get the same or better service from a pre-paid carrier for much cheaper.
The only issue is the phones themselves. I'm hoping better phones will come out for pre-paid carriers in the near future that mirror some of the high end phones you're seeing on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. Each should have a couple high end Android phones at least.
As for this problem with the Motorola Triumph: It would be foolish to expect more from the phone than the capabilities it was advertised with. However, if the phone has a feature it was advertised with that is proving faulty, then it's up to Virgin Mobile or Motorola to get it fixed. The phrase "you get what you pay for" as Roryrevolution would suggest does not apply here because in this case the consumer paid for functionality on the device that the device is not delivering. It's like paying for a sirloin steak and they bring you a hamburger. According to what Roryrevolution would suggest, we shouldn't be complaining, and that statement as far as I'm concerned is foolish and arrogant. I may pay less for my carrier but I want at least what I pay for.

lol you need to calm down. I was just stating despite if you buy a high end phone from any major carrier or prepaid carrier. Motorola has been known to have a lot of issues with their camera's on their cell phones. I personally wouldn't return a phone or not use it just because of the camera. A cell phone's purpose is to make and receive calls. Everything else is just a nice add on. If you must need a camera, buy a digital camera. Almost every cell phone has camera issues and bad quality.

and dude, you paid 300 for this phone. Most 2 YEAR CONTRACT phones are 200-250 with 100+ dollar monthly bills and 200-350 dollar early termination fees.
You bought that phone off contract and only pay what 40? 50? dollars a month? Trust me, you got exactly what you paid for.

I got the Triumph for the 4.1" real estate and it is a BIG difference when surfing the web compared to my iPod Touch 4G. This is my first android phone and will probably be my last since iOS blows it away. I like the Triumph except for the short battery life since I have to recharge it every day and I don't leave home without an external power source (xPal 4001). Btw, I would not get the iPhone due to the 3.5" screen -- it's just too small after trying out the iPod Touch 4G for the past 9 months.
I got the Triumph for the unlimited 3G data plan at $25 a month. I am well aware of the 2.5 GB throttling that kicks in October. I lucked out that I got the Triumph before the rates jumped 40% to $35 a month. For me, the math works out to $25 times 24 months or $600 plus a $300 phone for a total outlay of $900. Now, if I went and got a similar phone and paid $150 upfront and paid $80 a month for 2 years ($80 times 24 is $1,680) for a total of $1,830. So I paid about half of what I would have paid for a phone under a 2 year contract. It's a good deal for me. Unfortunately, Android doesn't do it for me. I am definitely going to keep this phone for a year and wait to see what new phones come out.
It would be nice if the Triumph had a 4.3" screen, Android 2.3, qHD screen, but for $300, it's a real good deal. I am looking forward to either the Sony S2 with dual 5.5" screens or Sony NGP or PS Vita with its 5" screen as a X-mas gift for myself.
Lastly, if you compared Triumph's 4.1" screen vs the Optimus V's 3.2" screen, it's no comparison since the 4.1" screen has so much more real estate.

LOL do you realize that we major carrier customers have to pay that much and are locked down to a 2 year contract and have to pay 100+ dollars a month? Not to mention the 350 dollar early termination fees!
Come on, be realistic. You are getting what you paid for on a prepaid carrier.

@RORYR -- I am paying $25 a month for unlimited 3G data so I got a great deal. You can't get unlimited data at this price point anymore.
Like I said earlier it's a good phone for $300 and it's a good deal. I am lucky that I jumped on it when I did.

He said it would be NICE if it had all those things, but since it's a $300 phone it's not going to.
EVERYONE knows that if you go with a post-paid carrier that you get the nicer phones, but you have to pay for them, or get a discount and agree to a $2000++ 24 month contract.

Really, the headline is that Virgin's handset is no triumph. Sheesh... I could do that with any phone on the market. Bottom line, the Motorola Triumph is a great phone at the $250 to $300 price point (it's $250 now on eBay).
I was with Sprint in nineties, AT&T, and 2 lines with T-Mobile since 2003. I just dropped T-Mobile last month, after Metro PCS and Virgin got some decent phones.
When with T-Mobile I had the Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S 4G, HD2, and BlackBerry 9700 (among a host of other mid to mostly then-high end phones). All phones I enjoyed (which is all that's important, isn't it. After all, no one should care what others think of our phones. What a miserable life, if one dances to another's tune, e.g., "Your glass frames are an uncool look dude" prompting you to rush out and buy a different style.
The Sensation had an 8 MP camera, 1080p HD recording, dual core processor, etc. But being on EM+ I paid $2180 for it. (As some allude, to total the real cost of a phone one must add the 24 month contract to the cost of the hardware. I was paying $70 monthly. That plus the cost of the phone = $2180.)
In contrast, I am paying $1260 over that 24 months for Virgin Mobile service ($40 monthly) and the Motorola Triumph.
For me, the $920 additional is NOT worth getting a better camera, camcorder, nor even a faster performing phone. (I am not one to be impressed by reviewers who chortle X phone loads web pages 32 seconds faster than Y phone.
My Motorola Triumph plays Adobe Flash files, plays Netflix streamed movies, has a nicely sized 4.1" display (I don't care if someone says "the phone is equipped with an odd-ball 4.1 inch display).
Sidenote: The addional coolness of being on prepaid is no contract so literally every month I can go to who has the best plan and phones. E.g., Metro PCS is getting the Samsung Galaxy S II, if one wants to believe Samsung's SGSII U.S. signup page.

Granted you get what you pay for, but I've played with and sold the LG Optimus T (T-Mobile), V (Virgin), S (Sprint), and Vortex (Verizon). They are all the same. Only difference? Monthly price and coverage.
If you are paying less for your service it should reflect the service not devices. $300 is a lot to shell out for a high-end smart phone. Too bad it didn't hold up. Let's hope Motorola is working on this. Again, they release near-completed-products, and will say a software update will fix it. It's beginning to make me believe they don't test their phones very well... :-/

The phone is made by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd for Motorola. Basically, it's a rebranded mainland Chinese phone and it's pretty good for $300. I highly doubt as many people would buy the phone under the Huawei name as opposed to the Motorola moniker, respectively.

Soooo...if you pay $300 for a phone on Virgin, you shouldn't expect it to deliver everything it advertised? Interesting. Does that only apply to prepaid phones? The problem here isn't that Motorola is "known" for sub-standard cameras or that it's unreasonable to expect phones to do more than make calls; the problem is that Motorola and Virgin offered a phone with specific capabilities and so far, have failed to deliver. If the camera wasn't something they were proud of, they should've left it out and chopped $100 off the price instead of making it one of the big selling points of the phone. Whether or not you (as an observer) think a functional camera is a good reason to return a phone overlooks one key detail: no one cares what you (as an observer) think, the decision rests with the purchaser.
Before you get all huffy with me, imagine you bought something you REALLY wanted on sale* and discovered that there were substantial features you paid for but didn't get. Say your iPod wouldn't sync playlists or couldn't play podcasts; maybe not MAJOR issues for you, but still functions that you paid for and had a right to expect.
*brand-new, sealed, from an authorized dealer, blah, blah, blah - don't try to wiggle out of this on a technicality

I spent 250 dollars and signed a contract with Verizon for the HTC Thunderbolt. I have had TONS of issues with the phone and eventually got sick of it and sold it. The phone would restart itself every day, multiple times a day. The battery would only last maybe 4 hours tops and it would constantly freeze and crash.
So yea, you spent 50 dollars more than me without a contract and for half the monthly bill. You should have expected a prepaid phone to have some issues. A horrible camera(like I said, found on JUST ABOUT EVERY MOTOROLA PHONE THERE IS) would be the least of my problems with the Thunderbolt. Does your phone shut itself off 3 times a day for no apparent reason? Does your phone constantly freeze and crash by doing the simplest things like texting? I hardly ever use any camera on any cell phone. That is the least of my worries.

Roryrevolution you're crazy saying those things about the HTC thunderbolt. I love my thunderbolt. At first it did give me the same problems as you had, but with the update this month, it stopped giving me problems. Its like magic. I have no issues with connectivity or reboots or anything at all. So you crazy.

Wife has had the phone since day one of launch. Hasn't experienced any problems with it. I've played around with it myself for a few days and the phone is great. It needs to be charged every day, but I have never used an Android phone that didn't need to be charged a lot. She uses Skype on it for at least 15 minutes a day, plus she is constantly texting, e-mailing, and browsing the web on it. My G2x needs to be charged twice a day (I'm a heavy user), and my Samsung Galaxy S needed to be charged once a day, along with my old Motorola Cliq. For what she has paid for the phone, my wife loves the Triumph and I think it's a pretty amazing deal as well. If I wasn't grandfathered into a really good T-Mobile plan and got my G2x for such a cheap price off craigslist, I would have no problem using a Moto Triumph every day.

What is this hit piece? Such a negative tone for a great phone. I have been very pleased with my Triumph so far, even though I had to return the first one. Their first batch has some issues, but I'm confident that Motorola will work it out.

I bought two Triumph devices at Best Buy for me and my gf. I have no problems with the camera...at all. The HD photos and HD videos are sweet. I hope the reviewer wasn't stupid enough to put ANOTHER screen protector over the "built-in" screen protector that covers the gorilla glass screen. That would cause auto-focus issues and might also cause a tint to pictures...LOL LOL LOL

I got one day of release. Some of its functions work as advertised. However, the phone is useless. No one I call can hear me clearly. Sound is overly muffled. I'm disappointed. Will switch to LG Optimus, which has worked like a beast!

Woo Hoo! I just figured out how the reviewer got the Triumph image with the "greenish fog". THE TRIUMPH COMES WITH A GREEN FILM THAT COVERS THE REAR CAMERA AND FLASH. IF YOU FORGET TO TAKE IT OFF AND TAKE A PICTURE THE IMAGE TURNS OUT EXACTLY LIKE THE IMAGE...FOGGY AND GREEN. If you take it off, there is no fog...and no green. Luckily I never throw anything away and had the green film covers still with my packing material.
Alan F needs to find another job....He's obviously not good at reviewing phones. Anybody else with a Triumph...be sure to replicate and post your results. Jheesh,. Just when you thought you could trust Phone Arena....

I've got the Triumph. I like it. It has a few quirks but most phones do. I'm not about to pay $50 or more a month for a cell phone. To me that's crazy. People gripe about what the phone company is charging them for a land line but do they realize how much they are getting screwed over for a cell phone per month? A friend of mine had an iPhone and was dishing out almost $200 a month. He is now with Virgin Mobile and paying $25 a month.
As for the camera I haven't had any focus issues so far. For a 5MP camera they have come out crisp with no color issues.
Is the phone, so to speak, perfect? No, but I didn't expect it to be and until pre-paid plans start to shove the rip off of the month club contract phones aside you probably won't see the "perfect" phone on pre-paid.
I had an Optimus V and it was a good phone (with it's own quirks) but I like the Triumph better and wouldn't go back. We'll just have to wait and see how it develops.

@monstermash123, does your wife use Skype for video chat? If so, how? I have installed Skype, but see no options for video chat. This is the only feature I have been unable to get working. Although, seeing as how it is still new to the market, I am sure eventually there will options available to use the front facing camera. Otherwise, I have been more than happy with the phone. Completly blows my old Samsung Intercept out of the water. : )

The film looks blue...but it is actually blue-green. If you re-attach it to the area over the camera lens / flash, and take a picture, it will turn out exactly as the image shown in the "review"....blurred with a greenish tint. This is no issue with the camera at all... the issue is with the reviewer's sources. He should be way more careful before publishing things.

Wow I didn't know cell phones or smartphones could cause such a controversy. I am planning on buying a Motorola Triumph. I was going to get one off of the Virgin Mobile website but if Ebay sells from one of their dealers then maybe I will try them instead as long as it is a legitiamate dealer. I would like to hear from someone who has gotten one from them. As far as the phone functioning properly, if I pay for a working camera or any other spec that the phone is supposed to have then I expect it to be working or I won't stop until I get what the item does what it specifies. I currently have the Samsung Intercept which is okay but it has a lot of things with it that drive me crazy like never really being able to make a call when I am supposed to b/c it may freeze up. I'm basically excited that i can watch a movie from my phone or stream it threw my TV...correct me if I'm wrong. I could also use the bigger screen which 4.1 is big enough for me anything bigger would fall into an Ipad which is what it seems as if some people are wanting.

I have this phone and I think people like to complain and are also comparing it with $300 contract phones not realizing that most of the cost associated with a $300 contract phone has been subsidized by the provider and that the actual cost is much higher. Otherwise the screen flicker can be avoided by counting to 5 before turning the screen on after it has just turned off. I changed my time out time and am barley seeing it happen, not that it was all that bad to begin with. Had a few problems with GPS connections before I installed an app called A-GPS Injector and now it is reliable. The only thing that bugs me about the phone is that if you receive a notification the volume cuts down about 50% until the notifications are cleared. I will have to take another look at the camera as I have not noticed any problems but have honestly only used it a few times.

I have had 5 Motorola Triumph replacement phones so far and not 1 has worked!!!
Each phone has had intermittent WIFI issues that only a system update would correct, but both Motorola and Virgin Wireless USA are not willing to issue an update.
There are 100's of documented issues from Triumph users who have paid $300 for what now amounts to a glorified paperweight!
In my opinion this phone is JUNK and a Class-Action Lawsuit should be filed against both Motorola & Virgin Moble USA on behalf of the thousands of unsatisfied customers!!
