Going back to the IBM Simon in 1993, smartphones have become smarter with features now that couldn't even have been dreamed of back then; a new infographic shows great advances made in music, communications and storage while showing the "Global Impact" of smartphones on the planet...

YES . Apple started it with the iPhone . Thats why rival products are sometimes called the iPhone killer .
However now in 2012 android products have long killled the iPhone .

Apple did not start it for sure ... The path was already made by Nokia , BB , LG and Sony through which smartphones are going to rule the world ...
But something was missing in their smartphones which did not reach people that well ... Then Apple just brought that missing part in the smartphones and just completed the term smart .. So Apple has helped in clearing the obstacles there in the path and made the change come fast ...

Many people started it before, but Apple made it popular enough to start a rush of development in the field.

Nokia started it :)
And blackberry replace Nokia :)
But Apple manage to change the world :)
And android successfully replace Apple
To become the most useful os in the universe :)
I can bet even the outsider (aliens) admire androids system :)

It's amazing how many Americans think Apple pioneered all this s**t.
Newsflash: many of the feature phones in Japan could've been considered smartphones.
Then we have Nokia's line of phones, WinMo (especially HTCs), Blackberry, and Palm. Palm was one of the larger contributers.

Also, smartphones were strictly for business use as Data plans and phones were quite expensive for the average consumer, not to mention the lack of higher speed wireless data in the US. there was really no need for a flashy UI.

More like Apple polluted the world when they released the iPhone!
What did they change? How can they change anything for the world if they can't even change their own stuff like iPhone design and iOS UI????

5 years? That's a long time in technology.
*I won't go into processors and RAM :p
But here are some things that are possible in the next five years (i think):
-Terrabites of storage
-Hi-res and full featured camera modules
-Smaller but longer lasting batteries
-Super resolutions (you can't differentiate from paper)
-Even faster connectivity
-Stronger and materials
Some devices that can be replaced by smartphones:
-Point and shoot digicams (DSLR/SLR quality and capability possible in 5 years)
-dedicated Music players
-dedicated Video players
-paper maps (not in iOS6)
-Laptops/Desktops (partially now, but possible in the next 5 years)
-TVs (in some areas)

Apple invent iPhone full touch screen but it doesn't meant that others couldn't produced their own phone. Rotten Apple should file lawsuits to all smartphone makers not just Samsung.

Apple needs to be knocked down a peg or 3
20. MartyK (Posts: 834; Member since: 11 Apr 2012)
IBM released the first smart phone called Simon, which featured a touch screen interface that allowed users to dial phone numbers. In 1996, Palm entered the PDA market and advanced touch screen technology with its Pilot series.
So no APPLE DID NOT invent the touch screen!!
Please people STOP SAYING THIS!!

Didn't invent but definitely made it usable, so you might as well say they did invent it.

Apple doesn't invent anything. They buy or blatantly rip off other's ideas add a few tweaks then market the s**t out of it as being new and revolutionary. Apple is the Industrial version of Thomas Edison. What Apple did with the iPhone was give a main stream audience a simplified touch screen interface with large finger friendly icons. The "revolution" in smartphone tech the iPhone started was in reality the dumbing down of smartphones. Sure you can watch movies, listen to music, browse th web, and purcase apps- but you could do that with virtually any other smartphone prior to iPhone's launch. You just needed to enter your media manually. Thank God Google pushed Android and let OEM's and developers advance it to what it is. No locked down b/s os for me!

Great, but the OS use by region needs a major update - Android actually has a clear lead in all markets, even the U.S.

I find it kind of odd that there's no iOS share in Australia...
