Slip of the tongue: Eric Schmidt says Google always wanted in on the "hardware business", and got itself a Motorola

“We always wanted to be in the hardware business,” said Google's chairman Eric Schmidt at the Allen&Company retreat last week. “Larry and Sergey have always wanted to do hardware in one form or another. This was a way to get into it quickly”...

This is great, Google deserves much more for their work which until now benefits SS and others much more.
And SS and others are not grateful to Google for it, At SS unpacked Google's name and Android were hardly metioned and what is S-Beam? Call it Google Beam or at least Android Beam please.

Eh it's Android beam re-branded they have to sell some how. Que no? anyway Google seems to have a bright future i hope that Samsung can Take from what it learns from android and add to Bada or Tizen and maybe Jolla mobile can add some of the open components from android 2 after all competition is always good, just as long as the latter OSes stay open and help innovate and spur interest on cross-platform applications
that way there can be some type of unified store or a developer can sale there apps anyway.

Motorola make good phones, they deserved preferential treatment from Google, if other manufacturers has problem with that, they need to f**k off, Android will always be free for anyone, you can customized and optimized as much as you like.

Absolutely agree, manufacturers will flock in where money can be made no matter what, and Android is a huge gold mine that not SS nor HTC can ignore even when Motorola gets better access to Android.

it doesn't get any better access to android than anyone else.
Whenever new code is made from google, they post it online immediately for anyone to access. that is part of their open source agreement. There is no "secret google code" that they are keeping to themselves. Moto outsources chipsets and parts from other people like qualcomm, LG, and Samsung, so they have no "code benefit" there either.
The ONLY benefit they may have is that they may make more stock/nexus devices. They may also be used as test devices for unreleased code.. but its not like they will be able to release a device with that code before anyone else.
Moto is still run as a separate company. Moto still has its own reputation. It still has to face huge challenges from Samsung and to a lesser extent HTC.
The beauty of android being so open source is that any benefit to moto is PERCEIVED and almost never real. Even if Moto starts making Nexus devices full time, that doesnt stop any other manufacturer from doing the same.
And honestly if it was between 2 nexus devices and one was a Moto with an S4 or OMAP5 and HD-LCD, and the other was Samsung with SA+HD and Exynos5 and it was all the same price, I'd still go with the samsung. I love the SA+ color saturation, the Exynos 5 is still stronger, and their cameras are normally better.
Though I would pick the Moto over an HTC all specs the same.

I don't know how things really work between Android division and Motorola, but if the engineers from Android take part in developing Motorola's handsets I guess Moto will have a huge advantage.

i still don't feel that Motorola is owned by Google. I don't see it in the Atrix HD.

Before folks start yelling preferential treatment...
Look at who made the actual dev phones for Android. Look who has actual nexus phones.
If anything, Motorola needs to get more attention.
