Siri competitor, Evi, getting the boot by Apple
0. phoneArena 26 Feb 2012, 19:34 posted on
Apparently when it comes to iOS virtual assistants, two’s a crowd. Earlier this year, Evi, popped up in the App Store, offering an alternative to Siri for those who wanted a voice assistant, but did not own an iPhone 4S. The $0.99 alternative managed to amass over 200,000 users in a short amount...

I guess "Creative competition" and creative aren't both in the Apple corporate vocabulary

Maybe instead of just kicking them out of the app store, Apple should have just seen what Evi could do better than Siri and use that to help improve Siri for future updates.

Haha more like steal the idea then kick the developer to the curb.

typical apple. telling its users what they can and cant have, all in the name of trying to make an extra buck by making sure customers can only get certain apps through upgrading the phone when its unnecessary. Wheres the big apple defense league on this?
I wonder if it has anything to do with Evi's leap to android as well?

no it has to do with apple's rules and regulations… they are deleting it pretty much because they see it as a copy of siri.. which i find odd because they havent deleted others.. but alas evi doesnt even come close to matching siri.. which anyone can receive from a simple jailbreak…
oh and siri actually cant be given to the i4 because the a5 processor contains hardware accelerated voice detection-- having it on the i4 would compromise the experience
12. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
lol, that is not the real reason. "compromise the experience". Android has had it running pretty darn good for years now, even runs well on a crapdragon S2 processor which is pretty crappy compared to the A4/Hummingbird and A5/Exynos.
The "real" reason is because its the i4s's "killer app". If it was on both the i4 and i4s, there would be little reason for most people to upgrade. Its the same reason that SIRI used to be a regular market app, working just fine on the i4, now its "not possible".. lol.. nope, its marketing BS, and Evi is a direct threat to that. I have it for android, it works pretty well. Add some canned sarchasm and its SIRI.

on android it works like google voice… but on ios it doenst do nearly as much as siri..
sigh.. okay the ip4s is not an upgrade to the ip4… idk why it so hard to understand that… apple doesnt want it to be either (because of the contract cycle).. and the 4s offers enough like dual core, a great camera, and siri to entice iphone 3g/3gs users, but not enough to significantly make ip4 users jealous… and everything apple does is for the consumers benefit… i can literally ask siri something from the opposite side of the room, which you cannot do without the hardware acceleration built into the A5.. yes, it works when its on your mouth, but thats not always feasible (i almost always talk to siri from an arms length).. it blocks the background noise to ensure detection
i agree there is also the market reason for apple to not allow siri on ip4 but again [integrated] siri is available via cydia for ip4 users

From my experiences working at an AT&T store, any new iProduct is enough to entice any iProduct user. It doesn't seem to matter how incremental the changes are they seem to crave it, and will get incredibly pissed at you when you point that out to them.
The iPhone is a great phone, but seriously....it's not THAT great that people should be pricks to the people that have a differing opinion.
27. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
that has nothing to do with siri and everything to do with noise cancellation mics in the phone to pick up your voice. i use VC at arms length. only tards put it up to your face as you distort your voice. you dont eat the phone to speak to it people! lol.
the ONLY reason it connects to anything is for ever so slighty better recognition and faster answers. But since googles voice commands are generally pretty quick with the answers anyways, its not a big issue.
There is no "magic" behind siri. its an evolution that makes it be able to recognize more than 1 way to say a command. that is all. the rest of it is canned programming. IRIS,Evi, Vlingo, Jeannie they all work the same without the sarchasm. And honestly, I dont give a damn about sarchasm, i just want the thing to work.

About the jailbreak you can't get siri without someone else's token which you need to enter the new token every 24 hours. Not to mention you could get that person blacklisted.
18. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
oh i thought they created standalone servers for it.. you probably are right-- i havent looked at it since there was all the buzz about it
24. biophone (Posts: 1910; Member since: 15 Jun 2011)
I tried it like a month ago it didn't work. Unless something has happened more recently then it doesn't work all that great.

and the reasons keep on growing for why i hate apple and dont but their crap anymore.

What a group of pansies. There are texting alternatives yet Apple doesn't seem to kick them out. Same with camera apps.

apple could figure out a way to cure cancer and 75% of the people that comment on this site would call it a money grab or claim that they just cured cancer for "sheep."
9. Doakie (Posts: 1865; Member since: 06 May 2009)
Your comment is irrelevant. Siri is nothing like curing cancer. It's voice command/search with an attitude. If Apple cured cancer and decided that they would charge 71% profit margins on it like they do their iPhones I'd show up on their doorstep with a pitchfork and a torch. You're a moron btw.
11. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
are you a socialist? or just against apple.. btw according to yahoo finance they have a lesser profit margin than companies such as microsoft
13. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
Apple retains at or near 70% profit margin on iDevices. Thats what they get dinged for.
MS has a much more broad scope than apple does as far as products go. Much of their profit comes from royalties and other products, not from the mobile space which barely makes them anything at all.
Besides, MS's creator has given billions away to charity, Apple's creator said charity was a waist of money. So in the end, who would u rather see make money? lol.
17. tedkord (Posts: 10216; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
At one point, he felt that child support was a waste, too.
20. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
oh okay.. so we are only supposed to look at one small aspect of the larger picture… right…
did i say anything about which one should get more money? i simply was saying that 71% profit margins on one product is only a small scope of a larger picture
and no i do not agree with steve jobs in that respect. but i do believe that apples new leadership is much more charity-prone, as they have already demonstrated
personally, i hope microsft+nokia make more money as sadly i dont own the ever increasing apple stock.. also, wp7 is my favorite

No, but once Apple started suing all other companies that had a cure, for their patent on, "Any solid, liquid, gas or any combination thereof, which causes diminishing, remission or total cure of any cancer or cancer related disease," we would probably cry foul.
Of course, you'd have to buy the cure in a pretty, shiny automatic dose machine, and next year when they improved the medicine, you'd have to buy the new dosing machine to get it.
Then we could go on medical journal sites and read comments about how Merck, Astra-Zeneca, etc...were blatant copycats of Apple, because their cancer medicine is a clear liquid, just like Apple's, and yes other medicines have been clear liquids before, but none had just worked like Apple's...

detailed and awesome analogy. flawless victory.

So it violated the TOS but was allowed on the app store anyhow, then later was pulled. What a surprise. Nice to see the app store is still unpredictable as ever.
22. codymws (Posts: 237; Member since: 17 Jun 2010)
Apple should have just bought them instead. After all, that's what they did with Siri.

Just because u have an idea , doesn't mean it belongs to you .

This article pretty much proves Apple wants to keep voice assistants strictly to the iPhone4s only...
