Screen comparison: Samsung Galaxy S III vs the fierce competition
0. phoneArena posted on 22 May 2012, 09:33
The screen is one of the most important assets of any smartphone. It's a window to so much stuff – entertainment, information, communication... It's pretty much the main feature of a mobile device. That's why when we're buying a high-end phone, we expect it to have ...

Nokia's cbd amoled also very good. It's worth included.

Aren't those samsung provided AMOLED screens with some sort of polarizer on top of it?
29. Penny posted on 22 May 2012, 11:40 6 0
Not sure if they are provided by Samsung, but yeah they are AMOLED screens with Nokia's polarizing filter embedded.
37. torr310 posted on 22 May 2012, 14:10 4 1
I read some reports saying Nokia's ClearBlack Display is more visible than Samsung's Super AMOLED. It should be included in this comparison.
56. shadez10 posted on 22 May 2012, 22:38 4 0
true!.. Nokia's ClearBlack Displays are the best in outdoor visibility...
61. Sessanta posted on 23 May 2012, 01:57 0 3
Worth included? With WVGA resolution, it'll be quickly surpassed by these phones..
No, it's not in the same class of the competition..

pardon, can't u see another wvga in there? let me point it to u. the one between s3 and nexus. cheers

You stated that HD displays don't matter. You stated that pixel density is what that matters. I would not certainly enjoy watching videos on a 3.5" display with 400+ ppi. I'd rather watch it on a big screen even with 150ppi.
I'm still disappointed with pentile though... but I could say from those shots that the blacks, contrast and saturation are better.
I'd take an AMOLED over an LCD display anytime, even if it's clearblack 480x800 versus the iPhone's and LG's. --- except that gorgeous Super LCD2.
5. andro. posted on 22 May 2012, 09:52 7 3
The one x screen really is a class screen but the colours to seem a little weak in comparison to other screens side by side on a daily basis, what small defects seen on pentile screens under microscope are easily outweighed by the incredible contrasts of super amoled
3. tward291 posted on 22 May 2012, 09:49 3 4
should have compared the nokia 900 to them as well but very informative. just curious how it would have stacked up against them in the outside test
6. andro. posted on 22 May 2012, 09:54 6 1
Perhaps the xperia s should have been included here seeing as it has a higher ppi than any of the phones mentioned
7. blinkdagger posted on 22 May 2012, 09:55 14 2
btw, iphone is dwarf in there side by side with the beasts
66. Bronx posted on 23 May 2012, 05:01 0 0
Hahaha. Exactly what I was thinking! I mean I can't move on to the detailed discussion because there's a pitiful dwarf in the row of beasts!
Seriously, the good that comes with the retina tech of iphone just goes off the window once you get used to looking at beasts' size. When you look back at the 3.5" of iphone it just doesnt feel the same anymore.. you feel limited or boxed or something.
That's what happened to me when I got my SII after the orginal wave. I was planning to stick with the 2 phones but after just a few days, the wave screen size doesnt feel enough anymore despite its vivid screen esp at that time... it might just be me.. but yeah...
8. PackMan posted on 22 May 2012, 10:01 5 2
Even though LCD's are brighter, colors of LCD display looks washed out under bright sunlight, whereas it doesn't affect AMOLEDs so much. Also AMOLED can display sharper image with high level of detail compared to LCD despite have lower pixel density or having pentile arrangement.

Lame, One X wins.

Strange, but outdoor visibility test by GSMarena clearly shows SGS3 is the best.

Out of all the screens I've seen, I will maintain that the HTC Rezound still has the best looking display.
13. strikercho posted on 22 May 2012, 10:12 1 10
4S still shows the best colors and image. Phonearena, please return the money to HTC and be impartial, would you?

fuc**r did not include the SONY XPERIA S in such a battle, even though it has highest ppi (342 ppi) and it has a hd display too......
this idiot included SGS2 which has wvga res screen but didn't include XPERIA P which has RGBW pixel matrix and have a qhd res too.............RAY S. is a super duper idiot
sony put on very gud displays on their phones......we all know how beautiful screens do XPERIA S and XPERIA ARC and XPERIA P has

i dont know but everybody seems to understimate xperia S..i saw everywhere...in phonedog official ranking they didn even included it in the list so that people can vote...i dont know why!!! if there was no SGS3 coming then i would definitely go for Xperia s..its overall very good.
44. leftheodo posted on 22 May 2012, 17:58 0 1
Cause it's clearly an iferior phone. The Snapdragon S3 is the worst dual core chip of 2011 and Sony is using it on it's 2012 flagship. You've got your answer! Btw I own a HTC Sensation that comes with that chip so this is not a biased comment.
48. Tjey007 posted on 22 May 2012, 19:02 0 0
i know the processor is not up to date..but its not that bad either. you cant compare things all the time. it has superb build quality and also a screen with high ppi. excelent camera. because of the less powerfull processor you cant throw him out of the league. battery is not excelent but not bad either. 32gb is enough i guess...getting ICS soon..overall its very good. i think its underrated...and what about htc one s? its getting everybodys attention and hitting top of the chart...then why not xperia s?? bcz of a less powerfull processor which is hardly noticable at real life.
55. dmn666 posted on 22 May 2012, 22:08 0 0
S3 may not be the fanciest processor, but HTC sense bogged it down real hard. It performs way better on Xperia S and outperforms (with heavier specs) any fancy 2011 chipset powered phone thanks to Sony's nice implementation. I have used XS, GS2, and checked out few 2011 HTCs - so I can't be biased either.

For content consumption like watching movies, I don't mind the colors being a bit on the saturated side (but not too much). However, for productivity like drawing and photo editing, I need the colors to be as natural as possible.
It's a shame that the Galaxy Note is made for sketching but doesn't have a neutral screen, and the phones that have great color calibration aren't good for sketching.
I'm disappointed at how blue the first four devices in the lineups are.
But even then, I might still go with the Note as my next phone.
18. darac posted on 22 May 2012, 10:36 2 1
HA!
Told you so - a few months ago i wrote thet SGS3's screen probably won't be better than that of One X.
21. remixfa posted on 22 May 2012, 10:41 1 0
everyone is raving about the LCD2. Had the SGS3 been RGB, they probably would have been a pretty even tie. Either which way, there is nothing to ACTUALLY complain about with either screen because you are not going to notice the pentile after about 5 seconds.
38. darac posted on 22 May 2012, 14:20 0 0
agreed, actually i think most people will be more impressed with samsung's screen.
if you look closely at the resolution photo - gaalxy s3 in fact does appear a bit sharper on the round edges of letters, than the One x - now factor in only 0.1 inch of the screen size difference(the frames are scaled to the same size) and it really seems like overall difference in sharpness should be negligible.
one thing left that i'd like to know about the sgs3' screen is whether or not it has the "black clipping" issue when watching videos.
at least that's what this great girl noticed with the galaxy note:(13:38 onwards)

brightness shmightness.
I use my SGS1 in direct sunlight with sunglasses on and I can see it perfectly fine, and better than any LCD I've used.
of course, i havent tried LCD2 yet. :)

26. Suts_97 posted on 22 May 2012, 11:32 0 0
In my opinion, for daily use, I would be looking forward to a more impressive screen rather than a more detailed one...And im not going 2 look at my phone so closely as if I wanna kiss it, so the Pentile doesn't really matter for me.
27. Suts_97 posted on 22 May 2012, 11:36 0 0
Anyway, its not about which one is better, it comes down to your preference.
30. ngo2dd posted on 22 May 2012, 12:25 0 0
why is all the AMOLED screen has a blueish or yellowish haze on the screen.
54. dmn666 posted on 22 May 2012, 21:53 0 0
Cause they are all garbage. Black level is the only thing going for them. Heck they are nasty pentile too! I love how those amoleds crap out on battery life when it comes to browsing - a major use of smartphones.
31. tha.fox posted on 22 May 2012, 12:29 0 0
outdoor visability on LED is extremely better than LCD and viewing angels are best on IPS you got it all wrong id take my nexus screen over lcd any day black on lcd looks horrible but on led just pops out any color around it and screams premium.

39. medicci37 posted on 22 May 2012, 15:21 0 0
Still, Samsung should gave used a rgb amoled or a lcd screen like the one x. My nexus has the same screen with higher ppi. & the black (which is supposed to look better on amoled) truly sucks. I have always used solid black as my wallpaper. But you can see alot of white goin thru the black when the lighting is dim (looks f*cKin awful). When watching a movie it is even worse. With the sglll having a bigger screen, & pentile display, the sglll should have the same res as the Note. If you have decent vision, you will definitely notice pixelation. Between the screen & ram, it's not much of a upgrade from my 2011 Nexus. On a Un related topic, turns out that article about Pakistani women using cellphones was BS. That's why PA pulled the article. So I guess all the Pakistanis who were said so were right.PA should have printed a retraction, or start checking facts before printing something.

41. TMach posted on 22 May 2012, 17:28 0 0
I am not sure you should be doing this kind of test without the Xperia S with its gorgeous display.
No credibility to this article the Xperia S screen, has the highest pixel density and the best screen until the One x came along. As much as I love my One x, the screen on thge Xperia X would get my vote.......342ppi
42. remixfa posted on 22 May 2012, 17:31 0 4
to all the experia fans. you notice something that all these phones have in common that the xperia does not ? sales. no one is buying the Xperia. nice screen or not, its badly making a dent in sales.
53. dmn666 posted on 22 May 2012, 21:27 0 0
Says the most ignorant fanboy. This fools thinks Samsung 'makes' Ax for Apple - LMFAO. Never thought ignorance could be this pathetic. He also made up stuff saying One X display was made by s**tsung - an utter BS. Who gives a crap about sales - we're having a display comparison here. Xperia S display craps over any pentile garbage shown here in terms of clarity and color reproduction.Oh wait those are pentile but you can't see it and it lasts longer. How lame! Now I don't blame apple for saying ' you're holding it wrong'. Jeez, some people just make up stuff to fill their insecure fanboy worlds.
Selling phones for a 2nd-tier carrier like T-mobile won't give you much idea about sales anyway.
65. blinkdagger posted on 23 May 2012, 04:39 0 0
told ya it's a bitter truth. xperia s is underrated in some part of the world. sony need to work harder in marketing, we both know xperia s is one of the best
62. darac posted on 23 May 2012, 03:30 0 0
they don't make sales in the U.S.
and since this is an U.S. site, xperia fans should connect the dots.
in the rest of the world, they make about 6 million per quarter - better than moto droids or nokia lumias.
anyway i agree that xperia s is not a big hit but in europe it is a significant name on the market
70. dmn666 posted on 23 May 2012, 12:06 0 0
I don't think it's a US site. They cover all European/Asian phones and reviewers are from all over the world. That's why Xperia S should have been included.
