Scared by the success of Motorola Moto E, India's Lava and Micromax launch their own cheap Android KitKat phones

Motorola's Moto E was released in India earlier this month, and is certainly a hit. The smartphone is very affordable, and yet offers a nice set of features...

So this would be some of the first devices running a mediatek processor running KitKat then. Mediatek has been really bad with support for Android and linux. Not releasing source code in the past.

no one will buy a thing that looks like a knock-off , people will surely buy more of the Moto E

It also doesn't look like it's running KitKat, looks more like Jellybean to me.

Their screen resolutions are lacking but the Iris X1 does look pretty sexy...

Lava = iPhone copy
Micromax = Moto G + Lumia's baby lol

Who and why would anyone buy this cheap phone?
Yuck cheap and low graded
If I was poor I'd rather save up and buy a midrange or a highend phone.

A lot of other people would rather save up and feed their families.

Priorities, man. Not everyone is aware of what that word actually means.

Considering there is a sizable population of people in this world who live on less than $1 a day.....I don't think they're going to be wasting their money on $700 phones or even $400 phones.
7. Planterz (Posts: 1357; Member since: 30 Apr 2012)
The Lava looks nice, if a bit (or more than a bit) derivative.
This is what the market needs. Quality phones that can be had for not much money. I only hope that these companies aren't just taking Motorola's lead in offering decently spec'd phones for cheap, but also keeping the interfaces as light as possible, which allows them to operate without the lag and frustration of a heavy skin and useless bloatware like TouchWiz.
35. Kamehameha (Posts: 44; Member since: 21 Apr 2014)
Their interfaces are quite light. Not only in terms of features but also optimizations. I wouldn't count on getting a decent experience from these phones.

The Moto E will be updated as newer versions of Android are released. I doubt the other phones will be updated at all.
22. anuragudaybhat (Posts: 3; Member since: 08 Nov 2013)
micromax announced that it will offer a guaranteed update to at least one future version.
11. gaara6775 (Posts: 649; Member since: 20 May 2014)
there ui is hideous and after 8-9 months you see /feel lag like anything .it's impossible to use micromax or lava phones after 10months,there touch response gets bad and gameplay sucks. one of my friend has habit to buy 2nd hand phone and most of the time he chooses lava or karbonn as he can't afford micromax. I advised him to buy a 2nd hand HTC Sensation XE that is still better than any of these garbage phones. now it is even running on sense 5,but he never listen to me

Instead of nagging...go sell it online after "you" stop liking it..
Common sense helps sometimes
14. Pravas (Posts: 2; Member since: 26 May 2014)
I dont think that they are scared of moto E.These companies have been offering super afordable smartphones from begining.Specially micromax offers nexus5 like spec at half of its price...So make sure to checkout their website before writing such article.
17. shuaibhere (Posts: 1743; Member since: 07 Jul 2012)
But they have no phone to compete with moto E...
moto E will be updated constantly..and gives better experience, better battery life, better screen..don't forget built quality....
20. StraightEdgeNexus (Posts: 3649; Member since: 14 Feb 2014)
Nexus 5 like specs? By that if you mean crap mediatek octa core then LOL.
49. aasim.skd (Posts: 2; Member since: 27 May 2014)
lol one is comparing mediatek processors nexus lol. I dont think he ever touched nexus.
16. AfterShock (Posts: 3697; Member since: 02 Nov 2012)
I don't know if Moto has much to be worried about here with these releases.
Pretty stout package without mediatek or broadcom.
19. StraightEdgeNexus (Posts: 3649; Member since: 14 Feb 2014)
All this crap boasting dual and quad cores, everything is powered by crappy mediatek chipsets. Thats why motorola is clear winner here.

Mt6592 is a good soc at 1.9Ghz, comparable to S800, but Roms are very limited for rooting
21. marcski07 (Posts: 588; Member since: 25 Apr 2014)
an average person doesn't care, as long as it is a functioning phone, only geeks and nerds and enthusiast will complain. :) just like iphone, they were preferred by kids, teens and normal persons w/o techy knowledge because they find iphone appealing and so easy to use.. :) android sells more because there's a lot of cheap android phones out there, imagine if apple will produce a line of iOS devices that is cheap but sexy looking and smooth to operate... they'll gonna sell like hot cakes. but nooo, apple wouldn't do that, because they are greedy company and only want to make phones that is overpriced, but of course if you're rich, that's not an issue, or a social climber, you will really want an iphone as a status symbol... :))
25. kailashtalanki (Posts: 2; Member since: 26 May 2014)
You have to remember that they can't make sexy looking and smooth to operate phones which are cheap.
26. marcski07 (Posts: 588; Member since: 25 Apr 2014)
i know. :) it's either they don't want to or they are not capable of making such. :)
23. sks1969 (Posts: 86; Member since: 04 Mar 2012)
They cannot match the radio quality/performance of a Motorola/Nokia/Sony Ericsson. That is why Moto G became an instant hit in India. This is the exact reason these Micromax, Lava etc.. don' t rule the market. They are still managing to stay alive.
24. kailashtalanki (Posts: 2; Member since: 26 May 2014)
I think that micromanaging Unite 2 is the best choice among the three . First of all the price is same as the Moto E . It has a larger display and it doesn't have onscreen buttons like the Moto E which makes more screen space as you can see in above pictures. It also has a 2mp front facing camera along with the same 5mp rare camera as moto e , remember it also has a single led flash. So I think the Micro max Unite 2 will be the best choice (Forgot to mention that it has a quad core processor clocked at 1.3ghz)
31. Adithya7184 (Posts: 317; Member since: 05 Mar 2011)
unite 2 is the best choice?
micromax is crap. 480*800 resolution on 4.7" screen is garbage. cheap mediatek processor is no match to snapdragon processor.
grow up kid.;
33. bon24x7 (Posts: 205; Member since: 30 Aug 2012)
I agree with you on the display choice but "cheap mediatek processor is no match to snapdragon processor." How do you know? Got any relevant comparison of a Quad Core Mediatek MT6582 and a Dual Core Snapdragon 200? Its like saying Galaxy S5 is no match for iPhonbe 5s because S5 is cheaper. You're the one that sounds like a kid and you're telling someone else to grow up? LOL
39. Adithya7184 (Posts: 317; Member since: 05 Mar 2011)
ever used mediatek powered phone?
one of my friend uses a micromax canvas device and it is powered by the same quad-core processor clocked at 1.3Ghz, but still it is laggy compared snapdragon 200 processor.
next time, get your facts right before commenting.
and S5 is cheaper? let me know the source then...
40. bon24x7 (Posts: 205; Member since: 30 Aug 2012)
"next time, get your facts right before commenting. "
What facts are you talking about?
"and S5 is cheaper? let me know the source then..."
S5 is around $546 "cheaper" than iPhone 5S.
Now its your turn to prove quad core MT6582 is no match for a dual core Snapdragon 200. Let me know the "Source". Your friend is not a source.. ROFL
44. shuaibhere (Posts: 1743; Member since: 07 Jul 2012)
First off all....mediatek processors have crappy GPS...and they use crappy a7 cores and crappy gpu's....
I have used phones with mediatek they are no match for snapdragon...
47. bon24x7 (Posts: 205; Member since: 30 Aug 2012)
Dude 'm not blind. Got proof for the claim? We're talking about MT6582 and Snapdragon 8210. Ohh and by the way, they both have "crappy A7" cores.
50. Adithya7184 (Posts: 317; Member since: 05 Mar 2011)
lol $546 cheaper??? thats funny. take a look at this then
/compare?ids=MOBDWA2DXGZHMSDF, MOBDPPZZDX8WSPAT&storeId=tyy%2 F4io
51. bon24x7 (Posts: 205; Member since: 30 Aug 2012)
I chose the 64GB version since iPhone doesn't have an expansion slot. Even with 16GB its still $76 costlier than an S5. So by your logic S5 is bad as its cheaper and iPhone is better? So what's your point? You're only supporting my claim..Are you really dumb?
52. Adithya7184 (Posts: 317; Member since: 05 Mar 2011)
i never said S5 is bad. Its greatest smartphone ever till date. i dont want to compare it iCr@p. and coming to the point, mediatek quad core will remain as a crap unless they sort out issues such as delayed GPS lock , crappy GPU(which always lags while playing games) etc. i used canvas 2 for 5 months and i know the real face of mediatek processors.
my roommate owns a Moto E. it runs smooth and lag free.
Now, you are one who is dumb and always comments without any facts.
32. ThePython (Posts: 485; Member since: 08 May 2013)
iPhone & Lumia knock-offs. LOL these companies are laughable.
34. gigantos (Posts: 60; Member since: 25 Jul 2013)
So MediaTek made it to KitKat? I believed all MediaTek-powered handsets still stay with 4.2 Jelly Bean.
37. Mubs500 (Posts: 1; Member since: 27 May 2014)
I think moto e is the best among the three phones. in terms. of build quality and stock android with snapdragon 200 dual core almost. equal to mediatek 6582 quadcoreand also 1 gb ram and guys I am already posting this comment from the Micromax phone which is not very good so if anyone wants the budget android phone then go for moto e you will not regret in future
45. diehardnokian (Posts: 88; Member since: 27 Apr 2014)
Micromax offers better value here. The screen and build is crappy, I agree. But better processor( based on benchmarks--AnTuTu - 17000 vs 12000 on Moto e & nenamark 2 - 65fps vs 48fps on moto e), camera with AF and flash(which the Moto e lacks), front facing camera(e lacks, again) plus promised future software updates by Micromax. You get all these for the same price. And Micromax too, offers a near stock experience but bloated to an acceptable extent!

Mediatek- one of the cheapest processor available in market. High on paper Low in actual performance. Micromax and other indian brands use it.
Broadcom- it is the balance of cheap and quality processor, not as efficient as qualcom snapdragons. Mostly samsung mid segment phones use them(duos, grand, core).
Qualcom Snapdragon- Most efficient processor available in market(intel of mobile market). Only downside is it is costlier than other brands. Samsungs top end phones use it(S2,S3,S4 etc)
Hope this helped how mobile companies bluff users with their high end configuration in paper but that is not true in real. If u not agree with me what i said above. Just google it.
